Inappropriate?I have the same problem. Version 1.4.0 (6-43160) on Mac OSX 10.5.8
I noticed that my backup had shrunk for no reason from 120G to 164k. My configuration was not backing anything up. It said "The following files will not be backed up because they are excluded by another backup rule:" But it doesn't tell me the rule, and I have not defined any rules of my own - just the default Mozy rules are there.
I downloaded and reinstalled the Mozy client. I reran the backup. Mozy ran for 41 hours with the message "Reticulating Splines' (cute msg). Eventually it died.
Help!
I’m bummin'

Inappropriate?OS 10.4.11 had some issues with 1.4.0.6, so download the maintenance release that just came out (1.4.1.1)
-
I have done the same thing, but it still does not back up. Support has been less than helpful. -
I've tried using 1.4.3 on 10.4.11 and it's still very buggy. Very disappointing. -
Inappropriate?I was running 10.5.8 and it was also unable to run 1.4.0. I downloaded 1.4.1 and it worked fine. None of the folks on the support line know about this, someone should tell 'em!
I’m happy now
-
Inappropriate?sorry dominic, it looks like Tiger is having issues with mozy 1.4. We are quickly working on fixing this however, the best thing to do if you have Tiger is to downgrade to 1.3.2.
-
How does one do this? -
i was able to find the link on their servers manually to get that earlier version, but it appears they've pulled it. You'd think they'd have a legacy downloads page.
This is all so ridiculous. A backup company releasing a version of software entirely incompatible with versions of OSX, causing backups to become impossible. How reliable... -
Inappropriate?Downgrading to 1.3.2 didn't work for me. Now the client won't open after you install it!
I'm running OS X 10.4.11 and had problems with the Mozy 1.4 client (hanging on reticulating splines; seeing my account storage drop from 260GB to 2.7GB), upgraded the Mozy client to 1.4.3 and *still* had problems with the backup hanging.
Very, very disappointing and I'll be an ex-Mozy customer if my 258GB gets deleted from the Cloud before a fix happens. No way am i going to go through pushing that much data again only to worry if the problems repeats itself somewhere down the road
I’m frustrated
-
I had this same problem. Use the 1.4 uninstaller and when it asks you do delete the logs and profile info... delete them. (yes this sucks). Then re-install 1.3. You should be back to normal. -
Inappropriate?I am having the same problem (it's been trying to reticulate splines for several days now).
If I downgrade to a lower version, will I have to start over from scratch? I recently moved and have very slow DSL, it would probably take over a month to reupload everything if I let it run 24/7.
Also, if it fails to connect within a month, will all of my files on the Mozy server be deleted?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I downgraded and it still doesn't backup. I guess the only thing we can do is be very vociferous in our complaints so that others in online communities are aware of the problems and don't buy theproduct. Customer support ishorremdous.

Inappropriate? After having the same issue, I:
- Updated to the latest Mac OS X (10.5.8)
- Updated to the latest Mac Mozy (1.4.3.3 b7023)
- Nuked my existing Mozy install
- Deleted my computer from Mozy's servers (and 28GB I'd spent weeks uploading)
And reinstalled Mozy. Backup is happening again. Starting off with a small backup set, will expand as progress is made. Good luck.
- Updated to the latest Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Inappropriate? They are actively working on fixing the Tiger OS issues. Make sure when you uninstall you always reboot before the re-install to avoid corrupt configurations. It should not stall at reticulating splines on 1.4.3.3.
If your files have already been uploaded to the server, mozy won't re-upload them. It will still encode and check the file against what is on the server and if the file already exists it will move on to the next one. This does take time, but not nearly as long as uploading the data again. But keep in mind if you change encryption or the file previously had a lot of patches, mozy will re-upload the file. -
Inappropriate?I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, then waited. It seemed like it was hanging at reticulating splines but Activity Monitor indicated it was doing something, so I let it run while I went out of town for two days. It was uploading files! It is re-encoding and checking everything, which will take awhile but better than starting over from scratch.
So if you're getting stuck at reticulating splines, just let it run for a few days and maybe it will move on.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Wow, I typed in "Mozy sucks" in Google to see what I get and I'm not the only one. I've been a user since beta and in the past year customer service and tech support has gone, left the planet - you might as well keep staring at the "reticulating spline" message (kept going for weeks) and you would get more done than trying to get help. In June I tried the "Live chat" - you could do better by picking your nose and dreaming about what a "live chat" person would tell you. So you know - I did think Mozy was good at one time and whenever I had a problem, I would get a quick response and it would be resolved in a day or two. Not anymore. My renewal is up in December. I told them to cancel my account, I'm not renewing and I've uninstalled Mozy.
Sorry for the rant, but rant to Mozy and you get a canned response. -
Inappropriate?I've been using Mozy for a couple of years and have been very happy, but now 1.4.3.3 won't let me backup(10.4.11). It works on 10.5.8. Mozy had stop backing up unless I went into and changed something in the configuration. Mozy suggested uninstalling and reinstalling which meant I had to reselect my files all over again. I did that, but now I can't get a backup to run. It connects to the backup servers and tries to download the manifest, but after about 20 minutes the connection disconnects and the backup ends. I have been told by Mozy that my case is being passed to someone with more knowledge, but I haven't heard anything.
I’m frustrated
-
Yeah one of the most frustrating things for me is that overwhelmingly, when Mozy quits the backup with some stupid error ("LostConnection1" or whatever), all you have to do is click Start Backup again to get it moving. But if this happens in the middle of the night, you lose hours of potential transmit time (during peak bandwidth availability). Why can't Mozy just restart the backup on its own? -
Inappropriate?I'm now in a state where I can't back up anything. Which I find very frustrating.
-
Inappropriate?9 days after I submitted a plea for help, 7 days after submitting all the logs they requested (the support log was 84MB - too big to send) I got the same response - "This is to inform you that I am transferring your ticket to a technician with more resources to help resolve your issue" and....nothing.
-
Inappropriate?I got faster response time up front, but I'm now in the "This is to inform you that I am transferring your ticket to a technician with more resources to help resolve your issue" mode. A backup plan is no good if you can't backup. Unfortunately, I just renewed or I would be considering another backup company.
-
Inappropriate?I'm on Snow Leopard, and I'm having the same issue: stuck on Reticulating Splines.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same issue "Reticulating Splines for several days despite new fresh install (1.4.3.3.43575) on MAC OS 10.5.8
Same response from support....
I will be cancelling asap
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same prob, I've got OS X 10.5.8 and just installed Mozy 1.4.3.3
Its been like this for a month and its getting frustrating. Anyone have a solution?
I don't want to keep paying for this if i can't get a backup or get access through Decho
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I finally got my problem resolved after many back and forth e-mails to support and trying various things. I had to down grade to a 1.3 version (don't remember the exact version), but I'm running MacOS 10.4.11. They have a new version 1.5 that's in beta and should be released soon. It's supposed to fix the 10.4.11 problems. At least Mozy support was persistent in getting the problem fixed. If you haven't reported your issue, I would suggest that you report it.
I’m thankful

this answers the question
-
Inappropriate? If you are haven't upgraded to 1.5 yet, I recommend you do. 1.5 handles reticulating splines a lot better. (log in to mozy.com and download the latest)
-
Inappropriate?I upgraded to 1.5 and now Mozy is removing my /tmp directory. This keeps many apps from working correctly. I couldn't print, start Photoshop, or start X11. I finally figured out that it's Mozy that's removing /tmp. I have contacted Mozy support and I believe it's being escalated. I'm starting to lose faith in Mozy.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Laura, I haven't heard that, but if that's true, I need a lot more info from you. What OS version are you on? Do you have a ticket with support yet? Have you sent the logs (alt click on the mozy icon and get the logs for support)?
-
Mike, Yes I have a ticket and it has been escalated. They are investigating the problem and are supposed to get back to me shortly.
This is on Mac OS 10.4.11. The same problem doesn't seem to happen on 10.5.8. -
Inappropriate? It looks like they have found the problem and will have it fixed in a maintenance release. It should only be happening in Tiger.
-
Is there any timeline on this fix? It's causing some huge problems with mounting AFP shares too. -
Inappropriate? My guess would be within a week (hopefully tomorrow).
-
Inappropriate? If you want a quick fix, you could just change the temp directory location. First create a temp directory, then open up mozy preferences and then type in the new temp location
-
I tried this quick fix and while it lets the backups work, my /tmp directory still disappeared. -
You have to Repair Preferences from the Disk Utility to get the /tmp directory back. -
Inappropriate? The new version seems to fix the problem and everything seems to now be working.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I've switched to SpiderOak, one of Mozy's competitors, and am much happier so far (been using it about 2 weeks). The UI has a couple of small quirks, but the engineering is much stronger. I haven't had a single strange error message yet and transfer speeds are fine (1GB/hour over my home cable connection).
I'm going to unsubscribe from this dialog but feel free to PM me if you'd like.
