Caps in page names
A minor question: It seems that page names are no longer stored with capital letters. Was this the result of an upgrade? Should pages with caps in their names be changed to lower case? I recall something about HTML wanting only lower case.

Inappropriate?Hi Bengo,
May I just tell you that my colleague and I are gratified by your obvious sense of humor. Thank you for lightening up our day.
So, by now we all know that you're a pretty seasoned SynthaSite website creator / Get Satisfaction contributor, so I take it on faith that you know what you're talking about -- if you say that page names are no longer stored with capital letters, than I'm sure it's true.
But now my curiosity is piqued, and I'm going to have to check with one of our developers to see what they say about it... OK, just got word from them. Yes, it appears there is /was a page naming convention at work here that you have noticed!
It is for the sake of consistency, for our purposes. It does NOT require that you make any changes on your side of things.
Thanks for asking, and hope that eliminates for you any needless expenditure of effort!

Inappropriate?OK, that's great. Changing page names isn't a big deal, but changing the links that might go to a previous version of a page name can be a lot of work. Thanks for researching this for me. I appreciate your help, and now I know so I can share the findings with others.

Inappropriate? Is there no chance at all to rename page in capitalized?
I unconciously renamed a page and now I can't go back to its original name in capital. I can't update my site because of this change in page name. There are so many pages affected by this and i am afraid to edit the links one by one. -
Are you referring to the file name of the page, or the menu link? I guess you mean the file name. If so it shouldn't make a difference to your other links, as the file name defaults to lowercase anyway. Let me know if I have misunderstood you? -
Inappropriate?Hello Monique I am referring to the file name of the page. To be specific, my tutorial page was "Tutorial" at first then for a reason i named it with something else. But when I renamed it again as "Tutorial", it cannot be because it always turned out as "tutorial".
But I fixed all the page already and changed all the menus and links that connect with my Tutorial because i have to update my site.
Kindly visit my site and hope everybody can help me check incorrect links. Thanks. -
I tested a few tutorial links and they seemed fine. Hopefully others will help. What confuses me is how you managed to use "Tutorial" as the filename in the first place. Although you might have typed this in when creating your page, it should have defaulted to "tutorial" so there should never be this conflict. If you can show me an example to the contrary, please do as this would be a bug I need to report. -
The file name "Tutorial" of my Tutorial page was created the first time i joined Synthasite..(oct. 3, 2008), the time before some updates and i was using the Enlight template before. Now it is the NoFrills.
As you can see, my Scrapbooking page is also named as "Scrapbooking" until now. I am afraid to renamed it again because I know i can no longer get back to "Scrapbooking" file name.
Thanks also for checking some links. -
That explains it! I am sorry about that. There is no way around this, unfortunately, but I will ask our engineers to consider the impact on existing sites if they are contemplating changes like this in future. -
But do you recommend to change my "Scrapbooking" filename? because it is still on Capitalized filename. Please give me some info about this because my scrapbooking blog link is already out in several sites. Thanks. -
Do you need to change it? If not, I recommend leaving it as is in order to preserve your links. I apologize on behalf of our entire company for the way this decision affected you. -
No, it's not. Hope this will not affect all my links in the future. Thanks Monique. -
Inappropriate?Grace,
If it's any comfort, my sites are a sad mix of CAPS and lower case names because a while back SynthaSite changed it so new names would all default to lower case. I have about 700 pages in this mess, though I change them to lc whenever I can. I assumed the reason was xml compatibility but now that I consider it, I don't remember if a reason was ever announced. There are probably many of us who named pages before the change and have either had to deal with legacy issues or bit the bullet and revamped all the page names.
Yet another example of how unilateral engineering decisions impact the customer and even the help desk doesn't seem aware of it. (I don't even speak to them any more, having found it likely only to generate a lecture about my conduct because I am fed up and say so.)
Don't forget to download your sites (all of you readers) periodically, because you never know what will happen.
Bengo -
I am really afraid to lose everything i have in this site. Thanks for reminding me about downloading my site because you are right, i have to secure all the efforts i have made for my site. Anyway, i have just edited all the pages (..as in all!) and it killed me. I am now afraid for my scrapbooking blog because it is still in CAPS. and again, it takes a lot of time editing when i rename it. -
If you were to rename the page your links would break regardless of the naming convention. The problem with the naming convention would come in if you renamed the page and then tried to name it back to the capitalized version. -
Inappropriate?Regarding Monique's comment about engineer consideration. Nothing personal, Monique, but HELLO. Good engineers would have anticipated this, and irate customers at the time were told simply that the default was altered. I was one of them.
You must be aware that many of us skip the help desk because it doesn't represent our interests to engineering and it doesn't provide timely and efficient answers to puzzles created by engineering.
Also, those were not server logs you were given to send me. Someone had a little joke on you. If you still want to send them, it will speed our analysis of the design flaws in your server base, but I think the engineers I brought in to work on it are going to be finished shortly anyway, and ready to submit a report.
If I was a consultant, I would bill SynthaSite roughly $65,000 for the work we are doing. Not for you -- but for the people who build playhouses and cooking help sites and who can't even get accurate metrics for their efforts because of corporate arrogance. That would include a token amount to reimburse me for the year we lost by making a bad choice. -
Inappropriate?Hey Bengo,
Thanks as always for keeping us on our toes and demanding excellence and accountability. It is thanks to customers like yourself that we can continue improving our product.
Don't be mistaken - this place is crawling with SynthaSite engineers, which makes it unnecessary for community support to represent anything to us.

I'm hesitant to say this but I find this statement a real insult to users.
What an incredibly arrogant response Lisa.
