Don't understand why Yola doesn't have FTP:(
I am just so frustrated. I have seen site after site that has FTP capabilities so I can use my Dreamweaver files but Yola doesn't have it and I payed 20 dollars for my yola site for a year. I mean that is cheap, but how do these free sites have what Yola doesn't? I am heartbroken because I can't use my Dreamweaver here. FTP can't be that hard to have if all these free sites have it?? Can someone explain it to me? Maybe I would feel better about Yola if I understood this.

Inappropriate?Hi Denise,
Just to clarify, you more than likely bought a domain name from Yola for 20 dollars a year, that is for the domain name, Yola itself is free.
Yola has an FTP we just don't have acess to it, probably for security reasons, and probably to keep inline with the terms of use. Because if users had access to the FTP they could remove the Yola footer or upload they're own site (not made by Yola) and basically take advantage of the free hosting.
Can you tell us what are the other free sites?
Connor
-
Inappropriate?Yes I can tell you the other free sites and I researched about half of them. Here is the link:
<! http://www.free-webhosts.com/ --> There are about 500 on the list. I am sorry that Yola doesn't allow FTP because I think it is very popular or so many sites would not allow it. That's the bottom line. If other free sites can allow it, than why not yola. That is my question. -
Inappropriate?Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, you are talking about File Transfer Protocol right?
-
Yes, you are correct. -
Inappropriate?Hi Denise
I'm sorry that this lack of access to FTP has been a source of frustration, especially if you're coming from a place that did allow this.
Is there something in particular you're wanting to do? Perhaps we can find a workaround that would be suitable? -
Inappropriate? No darlin, you can't work around because it simply won't allow me to upload my site files from Dreamweaver.
Good luck here and I hope all the best for you and your biz:) denise -
Well, There is a small possibility a workaround. I use my own hosting along side Yola's hosting, for example:
I can upload javascript files to my own hosting then link to them with the HTML widget in Yola.
I'm not totally sure if it's possible, but could you upload a phpbb forum to your hosting then link in to a sub-domain. (<tell me if this is not possible). -
Inappropriate?yes, FTP, it is needed if you are going to be able to upload dreamweaver to a Yola website.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Denise
I think the confusion arises because you are comparing Yola to free hosting services. Yola is not a free hosting service like http://www.free-webhosts.com/ Yola is a free site builder that offers a complete solution for site building and hosting.
We provide a tool that allows anyone, without programming knowledge to build a site easily, and then host this site free of charge. We also sell domain names, which you can use with our free service, or elsewhere if you decide to.
The reason that it is not possible to upload a Dreamweaver site via FTP is that this site would not be compatible with our software. For a site to run on our servers it needs to be built with the Yola site builder. Essentially Yola is an alternative to Dreamweaver, not a hosting service for Dreamweaver sites. You don't use Yola with Dreamweaver, you use Yola instead of Dreamweaver.
You said you would feel better about Yola if we could explain this to you, and I hope I have been able to do so.
The reason people on this thread are trying to offer help is they would like to determine what type of site you are trying to build so that they can advise you on how to build it with the Yola toolset. However, if you misunderstood the nature of our service and were only looking for a host for a site you had already built with other software, then I fully understand why this is not the type of assistance you are looking for.
If you need help pointing your domain to your new host, please email support@yola.com and we will help you with this. -
Inappropriate?thank you monique, this makes perfect sense and explains a lot of my questions. When I bought the membership I didn't know anything about my dreamweaver, ftp or website building, and I still don't know much at all. I so appreciate your explanation. I struggled so much with the button making and it is no ones fault, it is my lack of knowledge. Would you have time to look at my site and tell me how I could do a couple of things? If I could figure them out, my whole problem would be solved and I could just stay here. Yola is where I would chose to be if I could get these things ironed out. I fought with the buttons/menu for 2 days and still didn't get them to work and then the pages to match homepage format. I'm gonna take another "fresh" look today. I would rather stay here with nice people then go somewhere else. Denise
http://www.fromheretoeden.com -
Denise.. I would be happy to help you with your buttons. Can we take this one step at a time to help minimize any frustration?
Firstly, I just need to ask a few questions.
Please tell me how you made your buttons? Did you do it through cooltext? Do you have a sample of the buttons that you'd like to try and emulate? -
Inappropriate?Ok darlin, I will try this again today. It is my fault I know. I don't follow people's instruction very well. I think I have some learning disabilities. I didn't use to but I got sick about 2 years ago and I am not the same person I was, I was much more capable:) But I'm not finished!! Im gonna keep trying. The first link is where I found the buttons and the second in my website. If I can finish the button linking and make sure all my pages have same format, that is all I need to go ahead with the rest which is mostly text and my "store" for women's accessories for travel.
<! http://www.4yeo.com/buttons/METAL.HTM - - ->
http://www.fromheretoeden.com
I don't know if it's ok to do links. HOpe so, denise,, Thank you littleus:)
I’m feeling better and trying hard to follow instructions
-
Okay great Denise... we'll take this slow.
Now.. I see that you already have the buttons on your website.
Next question I have is: Will your buttons change over to another color? Is this what you want? This will help me figure out which code to give you. -
Inappropriate?Hi again:) Well, when I saved the buttons they are that teal blue so I don't think they will change? I saved them into my file manager in yola sitebuilder. Then, in order to put them in I had to insert "image" widget from sidebar selections? Hope this makes sense? Denise
-
Inappropriate?Oh, and I made 5 of the blue and 5 plain white with teal letters, the last 5 are for the hover text? I really was just trying to be creative with paintnet but I turned it into a monster, LOL!!! Just plain text is a cinch but ohhhhhhhhh no, I wanted fancy, lol!
-
I like paint.net it is pretty handy and you can use it to create banners with transparent backgrounds. -
Inappropriate?Oops.. I just read your post above... are you wanting to create hover links then? Let me know and I'll give you new instructions instead.
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I am sorry I didn't get the post all togehter littlus. I am making things difficult again, I know how much work to do screen shots. Ok, yes, I have 5 regular teal buttons and 5 hover buttons. Please forgive me darlin, I so appreciate you taking the time. I feel I will have this done finally with your help:)
PS I am with you so far and have been in those screens but I will do it step by step per your instructions;) -
Inappropriate?I wouldn't enter anything into the email field would I littleus? Or do you just mean the box in general and pick the URL field? I won't do it til I hear from you as I know it will be different for hover text. denise;)
I’m grateful to littlus, and everyone that has tried to help me:)
-
Inappropriate? Also, just to make sure, my url will be this:
<! http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... us.jpg --> Is that correct littleus? I mean that is the file name for that button anyway:) in my file manager. Denise -
Yes.. that's correct! =) -
Inappropriate?Okay... I think the easiest thing to do, if you don't mind, is for me to get your all your image path links and your urls. Then, I'll set it up and then post the code for you to copy.
For example:
Link: http://dejavuapparel.yolasite.com (where you want your page to go when this is clicked on)
Img: http://dejavuapparel.yolasite.com/res...
Hover Img: http://dejavuapparel.yolasite.com/res... -
Inappropriate?my URL will look something like this I think, right?
fromheretoeden.com/resources/buttons/filename.jpg
I will put in the http etc.
I’m more hopeful by the minute:)
-
For your image url - yes that's correct.
For your Link url to a page, it would be like http://fromheretoeden.com/homepage -
Inappropriate?Ok, if that is easiest for you? I will list my files here. But couldn't you give me just one code for the main buttons and another for the hover? I just don't like taking so much of your time joy:( Here are the files in case you think it's best. Whatever you decide. I can copy and paste one code and put in each file myself if you like:)
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... green home button.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... to home page.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... us.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... what we are about.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... mall.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... to the mall.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... button.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc...
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... us button.jpg
http://www.fromheretoeden.com/resourc... us.jpg
Here they are littleus, but like I said if you just give me code for one regular button and one hover, I can change codes for rest as well. Up to you:) denise
I’m thankful to littleus for taking the time. I owe her:) BIG:)
-
Inappropriate?oh shoot, why doesn't the whole URL show:(?
-
It's okay Denise.. I got it. =) Thank. Now, you just need to give me the page links as well - so that when a user clicks on your button, they are taken to a particular page. -
Oh, ok, I had some problems with my pages but let me see if I can get those for you. denise -
Ok, this is where I get confused. I seem to have one page that has the buttons and I need each of 5 pages to look all the same, with buttons, colors, banner. So I will try getting that right. We can just talk here instead of using all the forum space right? This is way better communicating through comments:) -
I did a save-as to my files but where are they saved joy? I can't find the page urls. I know I sound so dumb:( -
Inappropriate? My post disappeared and it was already posted?
-
Inappropriate?NOw its back , geeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!! I refeshed the page and there it was again. Ok, now, I will just list file names little us.
blue green home button.jpg (main button)
returning to home page.jpg (hover)
about us.jpg (main)
see what we are about.jpg (hover)
the mall.jpg (main)
headin to the mall.jpg (hover)
faq button.jpg (main)
faq.jpg (hover)
contact us button.jpg (main)
contact us.jpg (hover)
Ok, oops, phone call, denise -
Inappropriate?All are URL:
Fromheretoeden.com/resources/buttons
Hope I did this right for you littlus:) denise -
Inappropriate?Thanks Denise!
Now.. I just need your link url.. not for your buttons. But, for your pages. For example, if you wanted to go to my homepage, it would look like this:
dejavuapparel.yolasite.com/index
My about me page:
dejavuapparel.yolasite.com/about-me
etc...
Can you please give me those? -
no problem. I am still pluggin away to see howmuch I can figure out on my own. I hate having you work so hard on my "stuff". I can do this once it gets into my thick skull, lol -
Inappropriate?I DID IT, ALL MY PAGES ARE THE SAME NOW, YEEHAW! Just the button links and I am done. I can't figure out why this didn't work yesteday, LOL, oh well it's working today!!!!!!!!!!!! denise
-
Inappropriate?Hey there... almost done!
At first it was not working, then I went to your website to see how you've entered your image file names for the main buttons on your site. Now I see you've used capitalization.
I managed to change the main button paths.. but I don't know how you done your hover images.
Can you please be sure to copy exactly how your put in your image name.
For example, with your main images..
Your image path is actually:
fromheretoeden.com/resources/Buttons/About Us.jpg (not fromheretoeden.com/resources/buttons/about us.jpg)
For next time, I would suggest that you make all your image filenames lowercase - it's easier to remember that way =)
If you would be so kind to put down the hover images url again, that would be mucho appreciado. =) -
Oh joy, I am so sorry, I didn't know that case mattered ok. Let me get those relisted here:
Returning to home page.jpg
See what we are about.jpg
Headin to the Mall.jpg
FAQ.jpg
Contact Us.jpg
I see I really did a poor job of naming those. -
Thanks Denise.. should be done in a few minutes now! =) -
Are you sure the hover images are in your resources/Buttons/ folder? Or did you put them in a different folder? Also..after adding your hover images, did you by chance update your site? If not, can you please do that.. that may help as well. -
Yes, they are right in with all buttons:) and ok on the update. Just republish right? Well, not republish but update, yes did that for sure:) -
okay.. then can you try updating your site? -
Wait, I think we've missed something. I did upload the images of the main buttons to the webpage, but, not the hover buttons because I did not know where to insert those? Youre going to kill me right, lolj!!!:( -
No, it's okay Denise.. you don't need to actually put the hover images onto your webpage. It was me.. I made a little typo.. that's why they weren't showing up! =)
I'm in the midst of tweaking it right now... be a little longer than I thought. Sorry. -
Inappropriate?Don't you dare say you are sorry, LOL!! I can't tell you how much it means to have you help me. I do need to learn how to do this on my own, basically just get the code down right;) denise
-
Inappropriate?Okay.. thanks for being so patient... I had to check something out.
Now... It works.. but the problem is because your two images are not similar in size, when you go to hover over them, it shakes.
I would recommend that you go back to that source where you made your main buttons and make a second set of buttons the same size, but use a different color and these will be your hover buttons.
Let me know how you feel about this. -
just the same size joy? because I can do just plain white block same dimensions, then fill in text and shall I save them exactl with same name so you don't have to change code right? -
Yep.. that's fine Denise. Same name would be great! -
Yep.. that's fine Denise. Same name would be great! -
Ok, doing it now;) -
great.. let me know when you're done. =) -
wow, that was crazy! I uploaded my new buttons but they kept showing in file manager as the same old buttons. I finally did an update and they changed to the new ones. So they are there, that is totally confusing. When you replace a file it should show without updating:( -
Inappropriate?Okay my friend.. here we go!
Step 1: Delete all your current buttons.
Step 2: Drag an HTML widget over and paste this code into it.
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> <!-- Begin loadImage1 = new Image(); loadImage1.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... to home page.jpg"; staticImage1 = new Image(); staticImage1.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Green Home Button.jpg"; loadImage2 = new Image(); loadImage2.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... what we are about.jpg"; staticImage2 = new Image(); staticImage2.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Us.jpg"; loadImage3 = new Image(); loadImage3.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... to the Mall.jpg"; staticImage3 = new Image(); staticImage3.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Mall.jpg"; loadImage4 = new Image(); loadImage4.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B..."; staticImage4 = new Image(); staticImage4.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... button.jpg"; loadImage5 = new Image(); loadImage5.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Us.jpg"; staticImage5 = new Image(); staticImage5.src = "http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... us button.jpg"; // End --> </script>
Step 3: Drag another HTML widget over and paste this code into it and place this HTML box underneath the first one.
<a href="http://yolacodes.yolasite.com" onmouseover="image1.src=loadImage1.src;" onmouseout="image1.src=staticImage1.src;"> <img name="image1" src="http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Green Home Button.jpg" border=0></a><br><br> <a href="http://yolacodes.yolasite.com" onmouseover="image2.src=loadImage2.src;" onmouseout="image2.src=staticImage2.src;"> <img name="image2" src="http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Us.jpg" border=0></a><br><br> <a href="http://yolacodes.yolasite.com" onmouseover="image3.src=loadImage3.src;" onmouseout="image3.src=staticImage3.src;"> <img name="image3" src="http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Mall.jpg" border=0></a><br><br> <a href="http://yolacodes.yolasite.com" onmouseover="image4.src=loadImage4.src;" onmouseout="image4.src=staticImage4.src;"> <img name="image4" src="http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... button.jpg" border=0></a><br><br> <a href="http://yolacodes.yolasite.com" onmouseover="image5.src=loadImage5.src;" onmouseout="image5.src=staticImage5.src;"> <img name="image5" src="http://Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... us button.jpg" border=0></a>
Step 4: Change all the "yolacodes.yolasite.com" to your own page urls
Step 5: Do that "save page as" so that you don't have to keep pasting these codes again. Do this as many times as needed.
Step 6: Enjoy your new buttons! =) -
Inappropriate?oh my gosh, this is amazing. Did you have to type all that stuff!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok girl, I will give it a go, wish me luck, LOL!!! Thank you , no matter what happens, you are wonderful in helping me:) denise
I’m excited and hopeful:)
-
Joy? When you say change those yolacodes.yolasite.com to my own page urls, I don't know where the URL are? In sitebuilder, the URL is like so: http://sitebuilder.yola.com/ide/index... but when I search in index I can't find a URL, and, I can't find where my index.html etc etc is saved? Am I crazy?? -
Hey Denise
the page urls are generally the name you gave each page.
so... look on your edit menu list.. and you'll see the names of your pages.
add the page name to the end of your url.
For example: it would be http://fromheretoeden.com/YOUR PAGE NAME GOES HERE -
something went wrong joy. Nothing shows in sitebuilder when I enter the codes, I did change all the yolasite code to fromheretoeden.com/index.com. I wonder if the should be .html?? I'll try it while I wait to hear from you. Also, I did an update after I did the save as for each of my 5 pages, and opened my site and no buttons at all? -
This is what my codes look like I put in instead of the yolasite info,
http://fromheretoeden.com/index
http://fromheretoeden.com/about-us
http://fromheretoeden.com/the-mall
http://fromheretoeden.com/faqs
http://fromheretoeden.com/contact-us -
did you include the http:// in front of your url? Also, try leaving your page name as index... not index.com - see if that makes any difference. -
-
It won't paste in joy, Im sorry, but anyway, I entered it exactly as it appears in my list of webpages above k? denise -
Inappropriate? This is what I see in your page source:
Fromheretoeden.com/resources/B..."
That is not correct.
Also.. when you copy the code from here, try pasting into Notepad first and then paste into your HTML widget. -
Inappropriate?Ok, I didn't put in resources etc. I did it exactly as in the list above. That is right correct? Also, I did put the code into Word Pad first and saved as incase I needed to go back and redo. The new codes looks just like yours, only with http://fromheretoeden.com/index for example, Then I did a save as for each of the 5 pages. Should there be a www. in front of fromheretoeden? Maybe that is what's wrong? There was no www in front of the yolasite code so I did not add www to mine? denise
-
And I do have to have two boxes to put the codes in right. I mean both codes cannot be in the same widget. Also, you can't put two html widgets in the same column box(text box) right? I'll go look again. denise -
Word pad has inherent formatting which can cause problems on your site. Please if possible, use Notepad.
Also... the code be exactly the same as mine - including the resources etc... The only thing that is different is the a href tag with the yolacode.yolasite.com address. You do not need to include the www. -
No, when I drag the html widget over it automatically makes another box on sitebuilder. -
If you do not have Notepad, then you need to make sure you save your code as a .txt file not .rtf file. Then, open up your saved document as .txt file and copy the codes again. -
You can put HTML widget boxes in the same column.. I'll show you what it looks like on mine. Hold on a sec... -
Inappropriate?Here's the screenshot:

By the way.. if you want to see this in action on my testsite: http://littleustestsite.com/test -
Says "Address Not Found" :( -
Inappropriate?I know about the boxes in the column, I have that right darlin. Ok, I am sorry, I used Wordpad and yes, I have notepad. Be back asap:)
Joy, the only place I see fromheretoeden.com/resources/ etc etc is in the part of your code you did not tell me to change? Does that need to be changed as well?
denise:) -
Still no go Joy:( -
Inappropriate? Is there any way I can show you the codes I entered into the widget boxes now from Notepad?? If so, I could show you.
-
Go here to encode your code: http://forsite.synthasite.com/encoder...
Then copy and paste onto the forum. -
Inappropriate?I can't get to your testsite through the link, says address not available or something like that. So it's working on your test page obviously so what the heck is wrong with my page? Is there anyone that can go in and look at my code? I am just positive I copied it correctly and did it right:(
My screen show 2 empty boxes but the code is in them, I looked several times. How can I paste the code here joy?? -
my new code with my info? -
yes... please do paste your new code with your info. -
-
Inappropriate?Do you want to take a break Joy? Something is just not right in the code evidently but I don't see it:( I was not to make any changes to your first section of code right? Because I didn't, inserted exactly as you had it, then, is 2nd code, I entered the fromheretoeden.com/index, etc etc with other 4 pages names.
-
and with the http:// still there. -
Inappropriate?Joy, is the main code, the codes you first pasted in above right? Because I cannot paste my code in here. Why are you able to paste it in and I am not? I am wondering if there are extra characters in your code that should not be there. When people paste stuff in here, they usually put in things like before and after?? Is that our problem maybe?? denise
-
Inappropriate? You're right.. no changes to the 1st box.. just the second box with the a href tags.
Can you see it on my site? -
Yes I can, now if it would look like that on mine, lol!! -

-
Inappropriate?Ok, hope I did that right, it looks the same so far, Im checking against my wordpad doc
-
There's a couple of things here...
Some of your site url has capital F - should all be lower case f in from
you have a double http:// for your contact- us - take one of those http: out
give that a go.. and let's hold our breath! =) -
Inappropriate?Ok, I will fix it:) Don't hold your breath I don't want you faintin, lol!!
-
Inappropriate?<a href="http://fromheretoeden.com/index" onmouseover="image1.src=loadImage1.src;" onmouseout="image1.src=staticImage1.src;"> <img name="image1" src="http://fromheretoeden.com/resources/B... Ok, there is new encoded from synthasite. My page is still the same though after the changes Joy. I have to get ready for a birthday dinner and I am sure you are beat as well. Take a break girlfriend and now that I know where all the tutorials etc are in Yola, I can help myself a little better as well. Thanks so much for all your hard work. I will talk to you if you are here when I am finished with the dinner and cake, hugs, denise -
Inappropriate?Okay... I'm going to get you to go to the source and try it from there. Sometimes, codes are funny that way.. they only work directly from the source.
So.. go here: http://www.htmlbasix.com/mouseoverima...
Enter in all your information. Remember to be case sensitive as well.
Let me know how that works out!
Have a great birthday dinner.. and we'll talk again soon. =) -
How did those buttons work out Denise? -
Inappropriate?hi darlin, I opted to use them just as clickable for now. Each takes me to the right page and later on, I will implement in new buttons with hover over:) Thank you for all the time you spent. I discovered the easiest way for me and settled for that:)
see you later, denise:) -
I'm glad that you were able to find a workaround. =) -
thank you joy:) denise
