Further to what Peter has said, I would like to add that when we consider new features we have to consider the demand vs the cost of creating the feature.
Right now the demand for an downloadable version of the site builder is relatively low compared to other feature requests. At the same time the development cost is high. So while we are not ruling out the possibility that we would consider this, at the moment it is not a priority when stacked against other key features (overhaul of the style library, footer removal, user interface for DNS management, killer image editing tools, scaling our infrastructure, performance enhancements, forums and membership services, ecommerce, collaborative site building etc). As you can see the list is quite long.
In addition, while there are advantages to being able to work offline there are disadvantages as well. For me the biggest advantage of browser based software is that you can edit from any machine that can access the internet. With desktop software you are confined to a local machine.
The reason I share this is I want to give people insight into how we consider these things in general and set the expectation for this request in particular. We are not ruling it out, but as things stand, if we do implement this one it is not going to be soon.

Inappropriate?Hello,
Thank you very much for the feature requests! I will forward this along to our team for consideration in future releases. I can understand how it may be difficult with a slow Internet speed to build your site.
Although it isn't possible at this time to change the attributes of the banner text, right now you can change the banner of a number of the styles. If you did created your own banner you could add your own text using whatever style you would like.
Kind Regards,

Inappropriate?I like the Downloadable idea. Maybe when it's out of beta we will see this?
There are many places around the world with internet speeds that make this a slow process. Be great to give those people a good workable option.
I’m hopeful

I thinks its a great idea esp for those using Pre-Paid internet services -
Inappropriate? Thanks EMMY :) to all others to LIKE THIS :)

Inappropriate?Hello Zen
Here's an excellent link to Yola styles with a subsequent link to the styles that you may be able to change backgrounds. hope this helps with your startup.

Thanks Peter, great link. -
Good young Boomer. Comes through every time when he gets off the camping trails :) (and even on it seems!) -
Inappropriate?so, what Yola workers deciede about this ? working on a Downloadable "web Builder" ?
I’m indifferent
-
Hi Hussain - we'll pass your suggestion onto our development team. Right now we aren't able to confirm whether this is something that we will work on or not. -
Inappropriate?Hello Hussain,
Generally speaking the team don't announce what will be done as a definite. There are exceptions.
Requests go to the relevant Yola people and this becomes the basis of the users interests. The acceptance and possible rollout are not generally announced.
Vinnie sent out a related post on this some time ago and I'm sorry but I can't find it through the search facility. If I do I will post it here.
I hope that this gives you a bit of an understanding of the processes at work.

Inappropriate?Yeah I did suggest this pre Yola but decided it was too hard to produce and would need programmers to make it!

Inappropriate?I think that we should remember that Yola Builder is still in beta phase. They have mentioned a few times that there are still many features to develop and add before its a mature product.
When it comes out of beta I would really hope that a consideration for a "downloadable" version would become available.
In the meantime lets enjoy everything that is able to be enjoyed on this great facility.
I’m excited

its really true, day by day, the working with Site builder making tough :( -
It's going to get easier Hussain. I'm sure. -

Inappropriate?i think they should let you use programs like deamweaver to make/edit page and then upload them as pages!
-
Hi Martyn,
For a site to work in Yola it needs to be built using the Yola site builder so it isn't possible to upload previously built pages. I will forward this feature request along to our team to consider for the future. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I believe you can do that already by downloading it as a .zip file just click the publish button and select download as a zip.:)

Hi Dill,
The Download Site option is available for users who would like to download their site from the site builder and upload it to another server. This doesn't make it possible to edit the site outside of the site builder or to create a site and upload it back into the site builder. For a site to work in Yola it needs to be built using the site builder. Hope this helps! -

Inappropriate?I think this would be a great addition to yola! I could work on my site on the go, and not have to be freaking out about finding wifi for a long period of time to update. With a downloadable site builder I could build on the go and then when I find wifi it would take me 2 sec. to update. Again great idea, somthing I would definetly be looking forward too in the future!
I’m AWESOME

Thank you for your feedback John! -
No Problem :D -
Thanks for the link, Connor. When we get to the point where we are able to consider something along these lines, we will explore all the available technologies. -
Okay dokes! I think Ebay have a desktop application made with this software, so it must be good enough. -
Inappropriate?yes this is an awesome idea but i want a mac version just in case this is a great idea again.

Thanks for your feedback! I will pass this along to our team as well :) -
Inappropriate?I believe that this should be a offline browser based set up so every user can use it :D
-
Inappropriate?Yes that would be awesome and you could have a shortcut and it would lead straight to the Site builder!
-
Inappropriate? It wouldn't be very hard at all to make a downloadable web builder,
My devolper could probably accomplish this task in 20 days or so. -
im sure theres more to it like legal reasons or somthing like that... -
Inappropriate?I am Chandra . Ilike this idea
-
Inappropriate?I agree that I would like to be able to change the font and stuff of the header.
I’m curious, happy
-
Inappropriate?Excellent idea, but it’s never going to work.
A downloadable version of the site builder would need to be financed, which would probably mean we would have to pay for it, and I for one, am using ‘yola’ because it is FREE.
Other major software suppliers are now looking towards free web versions of their own products which offer an exciting move forward for us all. With the appearance of Google Docs as a free online office tool, Microsoft has promised that it’s next Microsoft Office 2010 system will have free stripped down web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and One Note.
I have developed websites with Dreamweaver but have had to upgrade each time a new edition came out so has not to be left behind, this cost me dearly, plus when I upgraded my operating system from XP to Vista the Dreamweaver software wasn’t compatible.
Thank goodness for FREE web based ‘yola’ that doesn’t bill me every time it upgrades its software, and if you’re broadband connection is slow, upgrade it if possible. -

Inappropriate? It would be a good thing to offer both an HTML editor and the PHP template type of editor like you have here now. Geocities (which is going out of business Oct 26) offered both a site builder using templates, as well a just a plain HTML editor. The HTML editor was just a plain box with no content in it where you copied and pasted your own HTML created with any HTML editor your had on your computer or if you knew html as I do you just could type it in those blank html editor boxes as composed it right online. You can download free HTML editors like seamonkey or KompoZer (see http://kompozer.net/). I am an old fashioned webmaster and composed all my original sites in htmal back in about 1996 when geocities first came available, so I can both write in html as well as use the free html editors, it is so much easier. So please make this option of using either availble soon because I have a lot of sites that need to be moved from Geocities before Oct. 26!
I could only find one other company offering both types of editors, but their sites are just too full of advertisements and they refuse to accept paypal for payment and they moved their support to india and I can't understand a thing that the suppoort people in India are saying, and they can't understand me , (the company is called Freeservers) and one of my paid sites was down for almost 2 weeks and I couldn't get a answer from them.....

Inappropriate?Hi Aaron,
Welcome to Yola, I hope you make this your new home. I started out with Yola (then Synthasite) about a year ago. Knowing nothing about site building, I started out with the basics of dragging in text and image widgets.
Soon I started dabbling in a bit of HTML and Javascript, and now this is all I work with. There's quite a bit that can be achieved with this site builder. I don't know the size or extent of your other sites, but I think you should be able to drag most of your HTML content across into Yola's site builder. Who knows, if your previous sites are old, maybe it's time for a makeover ;)
Here's an example of one of my sites. If I remember correctly, you won't find one text or image widget on it. Everything is done with HTML, Javascript, CSS and a few iframes which btw are hosted on another Yola site. http://helderberg.cc/
-
Inappropriate?@Boomer: Thanks for the great information!
@Aaron: I can see how someone with coding experience would like to have a blank template to start fresh. There are a few options if you would like a "blank" style. The following styles are plain white with background color options:
1. CleanSlate
2. BareNecessities
3. NoFrills
4. SqueakyClean
5. RedPlanet (to make the style blank, create a plain white banner and upload it. You will then have what looks like a plain white page).
These styles can be found in the first 10 of the style selection (click on 'Change Style' to see the style selection).
As boomer said, you can bring HTML and javascript into the Site Builder using the HTML widget. I hope this information is helpful, please let us know if you have any further questions.

Inappropriate? This is an interesting idea -- probably useful for a future release a version or two away :). GoodBarry (a peripheral competitor to Yola that plays more in the eCommerce/CRM space for small business websites) has a downloadable Dreamweaver extension called Triangle, which allows you to build your site locally.
I've played with it, but the problem of having something like this with Yola is that its too complex for most of the intended audience -- though it would be a boon for "advanced users", surely :)

Thanks for the feedback herringtown! -
Inappropriate?I agree. I was noticing that (7 months ago) Alex mentioned it would be difficult to make and take a long time... a comment?...
Isn't it possible to put an already existing program (YOLA) into a compression, then allow it to be downloaded, unzipped, installed, and used!? or am I mistaken? If Yola is considered a website and NOT a program then maybe this would be the difficulty but I think it would be very profitable to Yola to make it usable without internet connection (only publishing requires a connection). Generally, sitebuilding software which can be put onto a person's computer is never given freely unless it's wiki software but then server's are required. I was in best buy two months ago and I seen sitebuilding software ranging from $19.95 to $800.00. If I had or come across the finances to pay for Yola to be placed on my computer and can use it without the browsers I would pay for it when the money becomes available. I can't tell you how many times I lost work because my browsers stopped responding or something. Probably over 100 hours lost work because of stuff like that. Plus lost time from slow internet (which happens occassionally). ALSO - when yola is updating and we can't use the sitebuilder... we would be able to with a copy on our computer. Also, yola should make the two synchronizable, so whenever you save your site on your downloadable version (if connected and logged into yola) it'll also save our online version so we may use it at either "desktop location" or "yola.com" and the same changes are applied to both. -
Inappropriate?Although this is something we could consider, it is unlikely to happen in the short to medium term. Right now we are focusing on the development of our web-based site builder, both in terms of feature development and performance.
Personally I would first like to see an autosave feature that prevents you from losing your work, and a site builder that is optimized for slower connections.
Turning Yola into a desktop application does not make a whole lot of sense for where we are in our development cycle but once we have achieved more of our immediate roadmap this is something we could look into.
