How can I get more control over formatting?
Since we cannot paste Word-formatted documents into text widgets, is there some other way of transferring formatted text into a Yola webpage? For example, if I can get my formatted text translated into HTML, can I paste the HTML into a Yola HTML widget? If so, can you recommend a free or cheap program for translatin one of the file types that can be saved in Word into HTML?

OK, I just tried this site. I find it's only a minor improvement over pasting into Notepad. For example, the HTML helper appears to strip out the font type and size.
I'm looking for a more fundamental solution. The problem I'm trying to overcome is the very limited formatting capability of Yola. One strategy that occurs to me is to format my text in a more powerful tool than Yola (ideally but not necessarily MS Word), translate it into HTML, and then paste the HTML into the Yola HTML editor, thus preserving my formatting. Any idea how this can be done? Alternatively, maybe you can think of another strategy for achieving the same thing (i.e. preserving my formatting). -

Does that not provide the formatting that you require? If not, could you let us know what extra's you are looking for?
You can certainly format using HTML and paste it into the HTML editor of the text widget or use an HTML widget. The above link has a "View HTML" button on the toolbar which may help.

Actually, the text formatting toolbar does contain much of what I'm looking for. The main thing I'm trying to do that I currently can't is control spacing between lines. Sometimes a space is inserted when I don't want a space.

Hi Brian - if the default line spacing of the text widget is double-line spacing, you can hit the Shift-Enter keys together (Firefox and Internet Explorer) or Ctrl-Enter (Safari) when you want to go to the next single line. Can you give that a try and let me know if it does not help?

I think my problem is solved, at least for my current needs. I now realize that the extra space I was getting only appears in the Yola page editor, but when I preview the page, the text appears as I want it to look.
My default was single spacing, but I'll keep your technique in mind if the problem ever arises when I'm using double spacing. Does your technique apply in the Yola page editor or in the text formatting toolbar of HTML 101?
Also, I'd like your opinion about whether the method Donald is recommending is safe. -
I can't guarantee the safety of what Donald recommends. It is worth a try, but if you use it I suggest adding the web-filtered text to a blank test page first. Save it, navigate to a different page and and navigate back and see if the page loads and you are happy with the formatting. You can use the shift-enter method for any browser based text editor. (Yola, The HTML site, etc). For example my HelpDesk software adds an extra line space when I hit enter, so I have to remember to use "Shift-Enter" instead. Apparently this behavior is controlled by the browser and different browsers have different ways of interpreting hard returns.

Inappropriate?if you wish to use MS Word formatting, save the document as a webpage, filtered and click yes about removing MS Word specific tags... open a browser and click file, then click open, then click browse, the find your document and open it. Copy and paste from there, most of the time it works. I personally don't care for the formatting yola provides but I'm trying to make due with it since there are less errors than copying from word. The numbers and bullets are especially messed up. If you delete a number by pressing the backspace - it adds an indent (no number/bullet) then when you press backspace again it adds a number two lines down that you can't delete. If you attempt to delete it your browser will stop responding and lose all your work. It happens to me every time I try it. If you press the number button to delete a number, it deletes all numbers.2 Comments Add a comment

you also can't change the size and color of your numbers. Mine are small font and white (instead of the size of the text and color of the text like yola should have made them in the first place.

Thanks, Donald. I'm using Word 2007, and when I try to save as a webpage, filtered, I don't get the option to remove MS Word Specific tags. Also, when you say "most of the time it works," what do you mean by "it?" I don't mind an occasional failure of formatting, but I don't want to take the chance of including an MS Word element that will crash my site.

Inappropriate?it'll do it automatically. It MIGHT pull up a box with a yes or no question. If it does, click yes. Otherwise, copying from microsoft word even after it is saved as a webpage, filtered is not enough. You MUST open it in a browser then copy from there. Give that a try. I've had problems in the past with MS Word, BIG problems trying to copy from MS Word to Yola but any problem was fixable (deleting a widget, etc.). I found that using a webpage, filtered saved document OPENED in your browser window generally works.1 Comment Add a comment
