Hi Simon

Here is something very simple you can do for starters. Submit your URL to Google: www.google.com/addurl

After doing that it is a matter of waiting for the Google spiders to index your site. The other important things you can do are:
1) Update your content frequently.
2) Get other quality, related sites to link to your site.

Good luck. These things take time, but any effort you put in will pay off in the end.
