How to create a web page without using a template?
How can you start with a blank page with SynthaSited without using a template? I do not want to use a template. I want to create my own web page from scratch. Is here jusst a white page to start with?

Inappropriate?Hi Bill
Right now we do not have an option like that. Although your question has given us an idea. Perhaps we could create a plain, blank "template" for you to work with. The best option you have right now is to use the redplanet template. It is white and very plain and only as a banner image which you can change to whatever you want. This is the closest thing we have right now to a plain white page.
Thank you for asking this question!
Best wishes
Monique -
Inappropriate?Separately Monique mentioned Synthasite hopes to offer blank templates in the near future. I was wondering if there is an update on when is the soonest this might happen?
I’m psychedelic
-
Inappropriate?Yes, please. And choice of background color. I need a basic black with no header or there is no point in being here.
I’m beggin' ya!
-
Inappropriate? For now the "Evergreen" style might offer a solution:
It is plain black with a very simple navigation bar. It allows you to upload your own banner image. You could upload a suitable image or just a plain black box if you like. You can get rid of the header text by deleting it from the Properties sidebar and replacing it with a single space.
This is my closest suggestion for starting with a blank canvas while we work on more options like this. -
Inappropriate?sadly though you are still left with a green block on ether side of the new black banner in evergreen
I had been looking into it right after he posted -
Yes, it is not ideal. We need more options in this area. Like the new avatar! -
Inappropriate?Speaking of which, how does one do a profile and avatar (profile picture) here. I am very new here and while I see some serious shortcomings (none seeming that difficult to address) I love some features. One that is nice is the very simple publish to hard drive feature.
-
On the navigation bar at the top of this page you will see a link that says "You" with a drop down arrow. Click on this. Then click on "Your Profile". Your dashboard will open up. Click on "Account Settings" and you will see an option to upload an avatar. I am glad you see hope for addressing our current shortcomings. We are also hopeful and committed to working on these issues! -
Inappropriate?Ok. Thank you much for your help. Another feature that makes this a worthy host is the ready access to assistance. I'll try the evergreen. Much of my work is animated and designed to come up on mid screen. Each page is a work of art and all navigated with links embedded in the images, forming something of a maze. Is there a template with a header that can be sized and the images placed in the header so that they would open at the top of the screen on opening?
-
Inappropriate?Nice Avatar!
Your site sounds fascinating. The styles that allow you to upload your own banner image allow for a single image per banner, per page. I am not sure if this could achieve what you want.
Is there an example that you could send me of something similar to what you have in mind so I could get a better idea of what you are aiming for? -
Inappropriate?Well, It is rather complex and on looking around it might not work here. It is navigated through images that are referred to as PASSAGES. The image that is the PASSAGE itself would be center. Then there must be a four images located around that PASSAGE representing the four elements of alchemy; water, fire, earth, and air, each linked to their respective PASSAGES. If clicked on those "elements" lead to another PASSAGE. When one clicks in the middle of a the PASSAGE itself, through embedded links, it opens into CHAMBERS of art work. It is being moved, regrettably, piece by piece because where it is now has no archive or publish to disk feature. The art is everything from full screen images to small full page arrays of images. Should have enough on site here to give you an idea later today or early next.
-
Inappropriate? To give you some idea of how complex this is and how much content it entails there are well over 3000 links involved.
-
Wow! Sounds like a huge project. The image links should be easy enough to create with our link editor. You can use the Edit Menu function to move pages in and out of the menu and rearrange them. I would like to see the start of your site and then I will see if there are any additional suggestions I can make. I am very concerned about our file manager. It is another one of our problem areas and uploading large numbers of images is going to be tedious for you. -
Inappropriate?Game over. I can't stay. Only one image is allowed per "line". That shoots it right out of the water. It simply can't be done here, but thanks for the help anyway.
-
Not true. You can add multiple images per line by using "insert image" on the text editing toolbar to add images inside a text box or using the two column layout widget to create multiple columns for your images and add as many per line as the style will support. I think the file manager is going to be your biggest problem. We are sorry to see you go, but wouldn't want to waste your time. -
Inappropriate?I have student helpers. Not the file manager but the lack of ability to have more than one image on a line is the killer. Some of the working elements of this online sculpture are small images in arrays of 5 columns by 12 rows. Is there any solution to that?
-
Inappropriate?OHHH! Just saw your solution. THANK YOU!!!
-
Inappropriate?I am certainly not going if you continue to be so helpful!!! Not worried about the file uploads. My "minions" will handle a good part of that. It will be slow but divided among us not so terribly tedious.
I’m SO GRATEFUL!!!
-
Nice to have minions! The help is good but the tool is still very young. We only launched as a public beta product about 8 months ago. If you are willing to grow with us we will work with you. If our site builder is not powerful enough yet for your project we will understand (Although we hope it will be soon). I also suggest sizing your images before uploading them if you are not doing so already. Our resize tool is a rather buggy at the moment. -
Inappropriate? One more thing... Midnight Alley is not too bad for a basic black. Things are locating lower than I would like but it is acceptable and the top fade rather nice.
I’m chewin' tongue fingerin' it out.
-
Great! Glad you spotted another option! -
Just browsing, thought I'd say that I have been building sites with Synthasite for 7 months and the rate of growth and development of the company and product has been amazing. Whether you start a project here now or not, if building sites is important in your life, I recommend you keep an eye on events. By the way, I recently heard someone from Google (not an observer) say to try to keep links to under 100 per page. This may not be possible for you, or even pertinent, but I am chopping up some pages on my mega-link webcomics site PsychedelicTreehouse.com, to bring down about a dozen pages that exceed 100. I probably have 1500-2000 links spread over a 180 page site. I'd like to gain confirmation and explanation of what I heard but honestly it helps the design to chop so I don't mind doing it.
Good luck with your project. - Bengo -
Inappropriate?Sorry to butt in 1331.
Why don't go over to my site and have a look at some of the Synthasites.
http://forsite.synthasite.com/
You may like the "Photography Books Site" or the "dtours Site"
Hope this makes up your mind. Anything is possible with Synthasite.
-
Boomer you are a star! -
You're Welcome - I'm sure 1331 will be as happy with Synthasite as we all are.
Can't wait to see all the PASSAGES and CHAMBERS ?? -
I hope so! I can't wait until we release lots of great new styles though! -
How did you get the "links" at the top of this page http://www.aahap.synthasite.com/ ??? I'm also tryng to create a page about my dog and need to add the links but the only place i seem to be able to put them is in the main page. -
popeye, I think the links you are referring to are the ones in AAHAP's menu. When you create a new page a link is automatically added to your menu unless you uncheck the box in the "new page" dialog that says "include in menu." The position of your menu links is dependent on the style you select. Some styles have menus along the top of the page like AAHAP's. Others have them down the right or left hand side of the page. You can also put links on the main page as you have already discovered. Let me know if you have any trouble with your links. -
Inspiring site, Boomer. It is cool to be able to see things you've done that I've not thought of and be able to "read" how you did them. BTW, what is "Website grade?" -
Inappropriate?Monique and Boomer, I am getting used to things. As soon as I have a few pages done it will be apparent why headers get in the way, but for now I am a happy camper. As for resizing images, if it is critical artwork, NO resizer is adequate so that isn't a concern. I like how things link. Smooth and quick and with what I am doing that can be the biggest pain. Boomer, looking forward to visiting.
-
Yes, I think the link editor is pretty slick. I agree with you about image resizing. I am sure you have this well sorted out. I look forward to seeing some pages :-) -
Inappropriate?I was hoping to keep my links all together. Right now they are external
links, but i was hoping to put them in order. To do this would i be better
off starting from scratch. That would not be that big a problem for me. -
You can't put external links on your main menu. I suggest putting them all in the same text box on the body region of your page if you want to keep them together. It shouldn't require you to start over. -
Inappropriate?I think i'm getting it now, but how do i put my email in the top along side the other links?? This is what i have so far. http://buddysplace.synthasite.com/
I’m unsure
-
Your site is looking great! Unfortunately you can't put your email address along side the other links. Only links to pages on your site go there. I have two suggestions for you. Create a page with the name "contact Buddy" and then put the email link on that page. Or place the email link directly below Buddy's Story on your homepage. I hope that works for you. -
Inappropriate?OH NO!!! Now what do I do? Got it up to the first CHAMBER but the images have bright thin frames around them when linked rather than floating in black. This is the site url until I transfer my domain name: http://1331.synthasite.com
Can you have a look and see if there is a way to turn of the highlighted frame around linked images? The ones I am most concerned about are the PASSAGES; the rectangular animation with the triangles surrounding it. Have the first image in the WATER PASSAGE right after THE BEGINNING and all looks fine except for those bright frames around the elemental (triangles) signs. Oh, yes, all of the art work IS original. -
What was the question again? -
Wonderful artwork. I am looking into the problem with the frames. . . -
Still looking. Did you upload that image with your file manager or use a URL to reference the image? We will get to the bottom of this. . . -
Inappropriate?Ok, I think I have something for you. I gather you are using the text widget to add your image as per my suggestion? If so you are going to need to do a little HTML.
1) Click the HTML icon on the far right of the text editing toolbar.
2) The code for your image looks something like this:
<!-- <a href="toc.php"><img src="resources/EXITLIGHT.gif"> -->
You need to set the border to "0", so edit the code to look like this:
<!-- <a href="toc.php"><img src="resources/EXITLIGHT.gif" border='0' /> -->
(Leave out the < !-- and the -- >)
This border seems to be an artifact of the text widget. The other option is to use my image widget/ two column layout suggestion as you then won't need to bother with the HTML.
Please let me know if this resolves your problem. -
Inappropriate?WONDERFUL!!! Given I will have large arrays of images I need to go with editing the html. It worked quite well, so again you have saved the day, Monique. Thank you very much!!!
I’m PLEASED and GRATEFUL!
-
Glad it worked. I think we should stop the text editor from generating borders - so I will turn this into a bug report. -
Inappropriate? Now I am very concerned. On the page right after sign in, it shows the wrong template. When I try to load the editor, it will not load.
Update on that. It now seems to be working. Would like to make a suggestion on the link embed pop up screen while here. It would be nice if it listed how the pages are arranged in the site manager rather than alphabetically. It would reduce the scrolling necessary when embedding links. -
So your site is loading and everything is ok with your template? I am relieved to hear that. That is a good suggestion about the link editor - I will pass it on. -
Yes. Everything seems fine now. Didn't load for a few tries and then got around to it. I was able to sign in but it was showing that Evergreen template you had me try and would not load the site, even after refreshing a few times. Closed everything down and signed in fresh and it worked. A point about the file uploader; I have seen better, but it isn't nearly as bad as all that. It is working well for me in part because of the design of THE GAME things tend to be done in sets of four. The file manager is far more critical. The large screen here is VERY nice for graphics, but again, it arranges alphabetically; good sometimes, but it would be nice to have an option to organize catagorically. -
That sounds like an odd glitch. Glad it was nothing more. I would love to see folders in the file manager that will allow you to organize your resources, especially if you have many of them! Fortunately our developers are aware of this need and would like to address it as soon as our product development schedule allows. -
1331, if you get that kind of wonky behavior again, try deleting your Synthasite cookies. I've been told Synthasite is optimized for Firefox, so if you are using another browser, like me, you might get that sometimes, especially if you have had more than one Synthasite window open at one time. One thing I notice is that Synthasite (the tool) is pretty fail safe, so if you get a bizarre event it is usually not a sign that something terrible has happened. Like any program, you can minimize trouble by being a frequent SAVEr as well. - Bengo -
Good tips, Bengo. Thank you. -
Inappropriate? My overall impression of SynthaSite is, IT ROCKS! and is willing to improve on that. Who could ask for more?
I’m GLAD TO BE HERE.
-
And we couldn't ask for a better compliment! Rock on! :-) -
Inappropriate?Very True, Bengo! Frequent saves are a must. Good idea to back up as well. That brings up a question concerning something Bengo's comment prompted me to do. Went ahead and "published" to disk but it does not say where the zip saved to or what name it saved under. Where might I now find it?
-
It should be saved under the name of your site in what ever expander software you have installed (WinZip, StuffIt expander etc)
