i hit publish and put my own domain name in but it didn't publish how long does it take

If you are using option 1 in the publishing dialogue (synthasite subdomain) you should be able to view your site immediately.
If you are publishing to your own domain you need to log in and configure your DNS settings from the domain name management pages of your chosen domain name registrar (the company you bought your domain name from) Once you have done that it can take up to 48 hours, but it can also be a lot quicker.
