Inappropriate?Random linking will harm your site ranking....You really need to find reciprocal link partners that have sites related to yours in some way.

What I did for linking was put a form on my site to allow others to request a link exchange.I have my own linking instructions and criteria on the same page.On my home page I have a link that says Submit Your Site that directs interested link partners to my form.
When you create your page for you form be sure to fill out all your properties so when others with related sites do a search your site shows up.....These are just suggestions but here are a few things for consideration.
1.Create your URL as.....link exchange home pest control
2.Window title.......freeairsupport DIY home pest control air gun link exchange
3.Description......Home DIY pest control and air gun link exchange related sites
4.Keywords.....I figure you already have these
Adding the word home will help you relate to more sites.The acronym DIY (do it yourself) is very popular and fits you perfectly.
After a little time when someone does a search in Google such as "pest control link exchange" your site will show up.This is also what you could be doing now....Do your own search with that phrase and visit their site.Submit your linking info and follow their instructions for a reciprocal link. Most site owners require their link on your site first.I see that as fair if I am the one that came looking....Of course I require the same if someone comes looking on my site and fills out my form. When you find a related site to link to check out their links pages and visit sites already linking to them.There is a good chance they relate to you also and have their own link exchange form and or instructions. -
Inappropriate?lol i though i would get responses like this... some people may not want them near there home they eat a lot of bird seed. They drive away other birds get into houses. Plain and simple some people like them some don't.
I’m amused

i love red squirrels - England used to be full of them before the boring grey one turned up and took over.
I understand how pests can be problem i also live in a rural area... but please (for me) dont kill to many red squirrels :)

Inappropriate?Talking about link exchange or about link building when it comes to Google, you can also try to use "nofollow" tag it is good when you are trying to build links from your site. This means that Google does not transfer PageRank or anchor text across these links that will will help keep your site from being penalized linking to bad neighborhoods around the web.
For example:
<!-- <a href="http://www.examplelink.com/" rel="nofollow">My Link Partner</a> -->
