Precise definition of an update
Monique recently answered a user question and added the comment that Synthasite feels the two most important ways to get your site noticed (besides good content) are frequent updates and high quality links pointing at your site.
I find myself wondering, What counts as an update? Is it any revision followed by a publish? Or are they only counted as the number of pages with updates? Is fixing a typo enough to count? Do more frequent publishings count as more updates? Google search didn't yield much for me.

In this context, what search engines care about is that your website is not stale or static.
They see frequent addition of additional content as an indication of a up-to-date site. And they infer that these kinds of sites will be more interesting to users.
Additional content can be more text, more images, more videos, and / or more pages. Anything that adds potentially interesting new stuff that visitors will find relevant.
The more frequent the updates, the better in the eyes of the search engines. So daily updates are ideal. If a site is only updated once a month, then the search engines assume that it is a less useful site.
Effectively, an update is a revision (preferably an additional of a reasonable chunk of content) and a re-publish.

The short answer is lots of new and fresh content on your site. More pages, more content and keep the old stuff. We're building out our blogging platform which will be available later this year, and that will allow you to constantly publish new content to your website. In the short term, keep adding content to your existing pages, and create more pages around the topic that your website is focused on. I hope this helps.

I don't know much how search engine work but I think frequently update your site does somehow determine how often should a robot crawl your site. When I first published, the robot crawled my site every 2-3 weeks. Then when I started adding 1-3 recipes a week, on top of my weekly new article and ingredients, now the Google robot crawls my site once a week if not twice, according to webmaster tool report.
