No domain name guarantees that you a high search engine ranking. It is the quality of your site, how often you update it, and how many other sites link to you that is the most important. Many people have had a great deal of success with the search engines using free subdomains. So if you want to use a subdomain it is perfectly in order for you to do so. If you want to buy a dot com domain, either now or at a later stage, that is also possible.
