10+ hours designing a custom logo and another 10 on the bones of a new site... What do you think so far?

So I am working on a site in exchange for a barter of sorts and in my usual form have kind built my own style from the "Monster" style. The only things even remotely recognizable are the black border around the content and the arrow, although even that I edited to match the site.

The most time consuming and challenging time spent building sites is coming up with an overall look and an attractive and professionally logo to tie the whole site together. The logo that you see here is the results of over 10 hours alone as it is the 7th version I designed. The entire site was built using another style then tore down to start over again probably 8 times already. Combined, I have close to 20 hours on what you see here:

http://crabpotsupply.yolasite.com/

The background consists of a gradient repeating image and a cloud overlay on top of that, then a wave effect to top it all off. Man do I wish that the sitebuilder had a feature for using several layered background images and the ability to set their z-index setting. Make things so much easier...

Bear in mind that this is but the rough draft. ;) I plan on making the crab's pincers grow bigger like they are getting closer and than click shut when your mouse touches them.

Thanks and yup you guessed it... Happy site building... ;)

Hey Ed,

This is great! Again, your talents amaze me. I probably would never have guessed that it was the "Monsters" template!

Are you venturing into a sideline business? If so, I wish you much success!

Thanks, I am quite pleased so far. Especially of the the logo...

Dunno if it a sideline but I was looking for crab pots last week on Craigslist and ran across this local company selling theirs and though to do a little trading. After realizing how much it would take to design and build the site the thought of trading a site worth several thousand once it is done for 10 crab traps worth $800 made me do an about face.

Currently it is a site waiting for a manufacturer to supply me with product images and details so that I can earn a commission on each sale.

Truthfully, as it is turning into a looker of a website I am glad that I don't have to turn it loose. The icing is the possibility to earn a commission for product that I don't touch.

It is a work in progress...

LOL I can't wait to see what the banner (imagemap) looks like with the clickin/clacking pincers shutting when you mouse over the crab... Need to work on it.

I am nuckin futs. ;)

I did a crab pot from scratch... Not perfect but not too shabby...

It will look better when used as a background image in the right or left lower corner layered under the content and the blue background is shining through it like this.

Thanks Nathan...

3 hours later...

Edit logo to include a left "claw punch" and "right claw punch". CHECK
Reteach myself how to do an imagemap. CHECK
Go crazy trying to figure out the coding for said imagemap. CHECK
Create a pretty awesome mouseover for my new website banner. CHECK
Gonna go crabbing again this weekend with a few new crab pots. CHECK

Go ahead and mouse over the crab if you feel lucky... Do you feel lucky?

Now to figure out how to make the crab trap stay at the bottom of the ocean/page with the buoy at the top. I know, I know, I have two separate images to accomplish that but have yet to figure out the pesky bug which is keeping me from doing it.

I have to add a seabed and some fishy before I get to adding content... Not bad for a couple of days work I think. ;)

Sorry about your parallax banner being put off but my computer with those files is still in Oregon with my Niece. She is due back next weekend. Sorry Chief...

PS. You might want to clear your cache and reopen the page as you might not be seeing the recent edits I did on it.

Wow you got a lot accomplished in 3 hours! How did you get that boat to tilt back and forth and all of that? Those effects are amazing! :)

I'll try and recreate all the images/files that are on the other computer sometime tonight. It was just that I didn't expect her to take it and the only way to get it done would be to redo 5 hours of work. Granted, it will go much faster the second go round. ;)

Oh and the boat is actually a flash file Chief... There is no way that I could do that with a script.

My personal favorite has got to be the punching claws...I am constantly amazed at what comes out of my head sometimes... LOL I just wish that I could remember how I do things sometimes. ;)

Yeah, I like the punching claws too.

I was thinking it was a flash file. But when I right clicked, it didn't have the "Adobe Flash Player" context menu, which lead me to believe it is JavaScript until you told me it's flash.

I thought there was a jQuery way to make stuff like that tilt back and forth. There probably is but that would be too much work - flash would be easier. (For me I think jQuery might be easier depending on how long the code is to make it tilt with jQuery)

Okay it's official I'm in the crab pot business... LOL I just bought my domain.

If I can get my Honey Bear Playhomes on the first page of hundreds and hundreds of key words and phrases on Google and the other search engines then I see no reason why I can't do the same here. Crab pots are far less expensive to buy and easier to sell you know.

http://www.crabpotwarehouse.com/
The domain isn't live yet as I need to wait 24 hours.

Now I gotta wait for the content to add to it. (Twiddling my thumbs)

Patience...

So I was contemplating making the pincers close and a clicking sound via an mp3 clip but the guy looks so much Austin Powers doing his cats meow dance that he is okay just peeking his eyes through the claws.

Scroll down and the crab pot raises up from the bottom. I added a little animated red and white GIF buoy that I created and she bobs up and down in the water.

Too much fun doing this...

I am really liking that website! The background looks really nice. It looks just like the bottom of the sea! Just think, what would we do without CSS and images?

Content... you don't need no stinkin content...

Seriously though, I cannot put the content until I get the site's backbones and then there is the issue of the images and product details that I don't currently have from the person that I will be selling their merchandise on the site.

It's been fun so far...

What I hope to turn this site into is a warehouse of crab pot builders and resellers that can supply their content and products to the site, allow for instant online purchase and then the buyer to pick up their crab pot locally.

Imagine you go to your states page and find a local seller, check out their current products, make your purchase then set up an appointment for pick-up.

The craigslist of crab pot sellers.

I think that the crab warehouse site is looking good so far...

So close to adding some kind of content... I'm in the process of gathering sellers and importers/distributors. I am amazed to find out how many little guys are out there making a side business out of constructing and or selling crab pots in the US. As they say there is one in every port and the US has many ports...

Goin crabbing in a few hours... ;) Left a big 10lb bag of chicken legs in a garbage can all week for bait... Man that's gonna be a long and stinky drive there. Gonna double bag it I think.

Thanks Nathan... I hadn't updated yet after removing a rear set of waves and reducing the height of the sky background.

It is a ballet to get all the layers looking good in all the screen resolutions. Still need to tweak the waves a bit...

I see that you are lovin Jing. That is by far my most fav screen capture tool.

No problem, Ed. And yes, I am loving Jing! It's my favorite screenshot application ever. And, it is very easy to access from that nice little sun at the top of my screen. ;)

So close to adding actual content that I can almost taste it. Gonna (I hope) be heading over soon to take high resolution images of the products then spend days making the background transparent for each one. Joy, what fun...

http://www.crabpotwarehouse.com/

I messed around with MP3 sounds which made a click when the claws were moused over but it was lagging in some browsers so I removed it. Gonna try another route...

Boy am I digging the color scheme on the site. Love the baby blues as they make the logo really pop out.

Thanks guys

If I can get it as high in the search results as HBP then I hope to have a good 2012 selling crab pots online as well in addition to locating distributors to do my selling for me. I've got the importer, the website with domain and all I need is the content to start selling. (twiddling thumbs waiting)

Littleyou I love the pincers as well... They are too much fun. ;)

Nathan my niece gets back tomorrow with my laptop so I should have something for you next week.

Off topic... I was using a finishing nail gun to install the frames for a plexiglas window on the inside of a rabbit hutch that I built for my sister and because of having to reach in the slide up door and not being able to see the gun and what I was holding when I pivoted the gun the trigger caught on a piece of wood and fired.

It shot a 1" nail clean through my finger and permanently affixed my middle finger to the 1"x9" that was already nailed to the hutch. After some work removing the board from the hutch and then from my finger my website building skills have been temporarily placed on hold as I am typing this with one hand.

Pretty surreal to be walking around with a board nailed to your hand looking for a way to get it off. Imagine my face when I was trying to pry the board with finger attached off the hutch interior. Yikes...

Okay guys do check out the site now and let me know... http://www.crabpotwarehouse.com/

I spent more brain matter on the imagmap of the USA in the State crabbing regulations page than I care to admit. It did turn out pretty darn cool I think...

Okay I need a few hours sleep now.......................
