How do I go about doing a 301 Redirect from the non www to the www version of my URL. The domain names were bought through GoDaddy and not Yola.
My analytics are suffering big time as you can see from below.

TravelSA Site

WWW.
Total: 164 url's, Indexed: 42

Non www.

Helderberg Site

Non www.

Hi Boomer,

Can you unpublish and republish your sites following these steps:

1. Click on "Publish My Site"
2. Click on the link in the bottom "Use my Domain".
3. Click on "I have done this" and fill in your domain name.
4. Follow the prompts to publish your site.

This should set the address correctly. Will you let us know if it doesn't work?

Will all non www traffic as in h ttp://travelsa.cc be routed to
h ttp://www.travelsa.cc - I'm talking from an analytics point of view.

Boomer,

You want to stick with the non www, its doing better, i would suggest you need the canonical domain to be without the www.

This is done Yola side. They did it for me.

You can also set a prefered domain in your webmasters account.

Then you have to try and get as many of the links to your site without the www.

Also try to get the pages right - always linked either with or without the .php

I hate all this stuff, i have now managed to get my site 360 pages ranked from www. and only 50 from with www. - i still beleive some of that tho is double content with and without the .php.

Thanks Lee,
I started out wanting the canonical domain to be without the www.

I set the prefered domain in my webmasters account, but my understanding is that this is only for the way that it displays in a Google search. If you do a search on my site, the URL is displayed without the www at present.

After a lot of research, I've changed my mind and now want to change it to the www version. I have now changed the prefered domain in my webmasters back to the www.

My understanding also is that the redirect from non www to www has to be done Yola side. (Server side)

presume it would...

The main thing is to try and not have duplicate content, i.e. for google to think of it as 1 site not 2 - either or, whay do you want the www.?

Either ways good whatever you like, the whole .php or not .php is just as important i think - i have now changed every internal link in my site not to use the .php - or at least most of them. - I still know for a fact google have both versions of some pages ranked.

Ok, maybe I should leave it as the non www.
I just realised I have to change hundreds of internal URL's :-(
I still need the 301 redirect for SEO though.

Here's some interesting reading:

Also after changing my prefered domain in Webmaster (to www) my new search results look as follows:

So... changing the prefered domain, changes the way it is displayed in a search,
and obviously when someone clicks on it you get the desired link (www) back to your site.

What do you mean about leaving out the .php?

Hi Boomer - we've made the change for you and http://www.travelsa.cc/ and http://www.helderberg.cc/ both direct to the non-www version.

Please let us know if you need any other help?
