Hello Jack,

The jury is kindof out on this one. Alexa ranks websites, and when you surf the web with the Alexa Toolbar installed you are basically casting votes for other sites as you visit them, thus giving Alexa the opportunity to decide on the popularity of sites. Many experts will say that Alexa rankings can easily be shaped and are often not accurate.

Installing the Alexa Toolbar is nice because you can easily see information such as meta data and the popularity of various sites that you visit. You can also analyze your own site such as your traffic, it's popularity, and incoming links.

All in all, I would say that Alexa is helpful to decide on the overall popularity of a site. If a site has the Alexa Rank of 8,000,000 then you can be pretty sure it is not a heavily visited site, and if it has a rank of 20,000 you can view the site as having some pull in the search engines. But, it isn't seen by most to increase your own search engine rankings.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Emmy fully. On my old computer I had alexa installed purely for no reason. All it really is (like Emmy states) is a user based website voting system. Not too useful besides the ability to check a website's popularity.

But here is my idea,
alexa rank is important!

Alexa is the major public-ranking source. Markosweb, and other website worth calculators calculate their own ranking based on google page rank, alexa rank, etc.

Also, alexa toolbar is installed on millions of computers. Let's say your site has alexa rank 8,000,000. If a user visited your site once, he/she will think that he/she is the only one who visit the web site. If it has a great ranking, he/she will think that more people like me love this website.

I agree that Google has no reason to get alexa rank to assign PRs to sites.
