I have just talked with one of your reps on the phone. I have an issue with your rule about having a credit card before I can do anything with you. No acceptation. It seems to me to be completely ludicrous that the ONLY way that I can prove that I am a Canadian is to own a credit card. From what I gathered from the situation is that You people are not a Canadian company yourselves"Strange EH". In reality I do not think that you are promoting Canada. Change your rules and you may get more Canadian customers for this project. My email address is anhsales@hotmail.com if you have anything constructive to say

Hi ken,

Thank you for voicing your concerns. I hope I can provide you with the necessary answers that will give you the peace of mind you're looking for.

First of all, in order to take advantage of this offer and to secure your free .ca domain, you do need to enter the details of a Canadian credit card in order to prove your address. The credit card details are really only used to confirm that you are a Canadian resident. It is not, or never has it been our intention to make the process unnecessarily difficult for Canadian users. If you do not have a credit card I would suggest trying a pre-paid credit card. This should work if you are able to enter your geographic location as the card owner.

When you register a free domain through the Get Your Business Online program no charge is made to your card. Instead, a "pending authorization" is sent to your account in order to trigger the address verification security (AVS) system that confirms your Canadian address. CIRA (the body that controls domain registration in Canada) and Google both require address verification and credit card address verification is the most secure way of doing this. This method also allows traveling Canadian residents to take advantage of the offer, whereas other address verification methods would require them to be physically located in the country.

Please also allow me to address the issue about Yola not being a Canadian company. Yola is a global company and while we may not be based in Canada, we are very excited about expanding our Canadian presence and we are proud to be a part of this wonderful initiative. I also want to inform you that we employ a Canadian support representative.

There have been a large number of Canadian small business owners who have expressed immense gratification at the opportunity to become a part of this. There really are no ulterior motives. Where else can you get a free .ca domain name for 12 months as well as free sitebuilding?

I hope this addresses your concerns and that you are able to register a free domain through Yola.com. We look forward to seeing what you create!

Now you say in this response that there is not any ulterior motive for obtaining my credit card information. How can I believe you? I asked that I I purchased the domain myself and actually bought and paid for a silver package through pay pal (which supplies proof of my Canadian residence), You still require that credit card number along with the three digit code. This suggests to me that you have something else in mind other than confirming my address.

I am 1000 percent in favor of this Canadian incentive but I wish that there was some other way to prove that I am Canadian such as my birth certificate and the birth certificates of my 5 Canadian forefathers. Maybe a rundown and fingerprints from Interpol would suffice? I can't find any possible excuse to lie about my citizenship and home address.

I was told by the Canadian representative on the phone that Yola is an American company and he was located in Capetown South Africa. Now how Canadian is that.? You are preaching to me how Canadian you are.

Just as you have issue with me owning a credit card I have a hundred issues about not owning one. I am not sure if a prepaid card would give any information with regards to my address. I believe your rule is hiding the fact that you have another need for that number other than identification.

There are some very large corporations backing this incentive and you are taking it upon yourself to make the rules.

Again I truly believe whole-heartedly in this program and I hope you consider changing the rule which prohibits normal cash paying customers to expand their business.

I'm sorry you are so frustrated Ken. If you are unable to trust that our only purpose for requesting your credit card information is to verify your address, I'm afraid there's not much more we can do to assist you and it would be in your best interest to opt not to participate in the program.

To the best of my knowledge there is no automated way to verify birth certificates online, and regardless, we do not need to confirm that you were born in Canada, rather we need to confirm that you reside in Canada. Our team consulted with both CIRA and Google in determining the best way to verify Canadian addresses, and address verification via credit card authorization was deemed the most reliable and secure.

We do not take any issue with you not owning a credit card and certainly respect your decision in that regards. However, if you are unwilling to try the options we have offered that do not require a credit card (either using a pre paid gift card with a credit card symbol that supports address verification, or upgrading to Yola Silver for $7.99 and paying via PayPal) then again, you will be unable to participate in the program.

In light of your comments about difficulty with our PayPal suggestion, I tested the system to insure it was working properly. I was able to obtain a free .ca domain successfully without using a credit card as we indicated to your originally. If you access your Yola account that was created for you when you visited the GYBO.ca site and choose to upgrade to Yola Silver, you will be able to select payment via PayPal. Once your payment is processed and your address is verified, you will be able to select the "Next Step" button where you can register your free .ca domain, no credit card required.

I do not feel we made any attempts to preach to you about how Canadian we are, and if that's how it came across, you have our sincerest apologies. We are a global company with offices in San Francisco and Cape Town. We recently expanded our language offering to include French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Italian and as such also added members of our support staff representing these languages to accommodate for our expansion.

We are proud of our roots but equally proud to be expanding our business in other countries such as Canada. We believe our product and services offer a tremendous value to small businesses worldwide and it is our goal to make it as accessible as possible. As you have indicated the hardship presented to you by our address verification process, I have passed your feedback on to our Product Team for review. We hope you will decide to participate in this program, but regardless of your decision, we wish you the best with your business and your future endeavors.

Cash is not the norm on the net and business in general.....Even at the retail level cash is not the norm.If you want to do any type of business you will need at the very least a debit card.

It was mentioned to me in the original phone conversation that even if I go ahead with the silver package I would still eventually need a credit card in some manor.
Of course in the comment about cash I did really mean pay for my bills in another form rather than credit card. I am over 65 years old and so far in my life I have managed to pay for everything with cash or (Debit card).

Now how does buying a silver package with pay pal and then continuing with your program constitute my address as being a Canadian one. There goes your rule saying a credit card is the only way on this earth to prove I live in Canada.
In another area such as forex which I am a little familiar with they have a different way to prove your address. That being a phone bill or a utility bill with your name and address on it along with a drivers license to prove your identity.

I'm sorry if you received any misinformation previously, but I can assure you that no credit card is required if you check out via PayPal with the $7.99 Yola Silver package as I tested this again myself. As there is an actual purchase involved your address is verified in the PayPal checkout process.

We never said address verification via credit card is the only way for you to prove your residency. What we have tried to explain is that it is the method we have chosen based on the advice of our partners as it is both automated and secure. We freely admit alternatives exist but we are not in a position to accept or verify birth certificates, utility bills, phone bills or drivers licenses via our online checkout process at this time.

You indicate above that you have used a debit card in previous purchases. Most debit cards carry the MasterCard or Visa insignia on them. If this is true for you, then you actually have the power to register your free .ca domain with your debit card.

We have done our best to address your concerns and if you are still unsatisfied with our replies, we invite you to exercise your right as a consumer to look for a domain registrar that can accommodate you in a manner you are happy with.

This proves exactly my point. You demand a credit card having the excuse you want my address. You then allow PayPal as a replacement with a pay pal confirmation of my address. Guess what you are contradicting yourself right then and there.

From my limited experience there are way nicer templates out there along with superior SEO techniques which translate into real dollars.Your website experience being second rate.
Do you know what there are thousands of better e commerce solutions that are better to handle a website business than yourselves. And yes I will take your advice and take my business elsewhere with quite possibly a Canadian solution. This is my whole point. You are not Canadian and by your attitude you could care less what I do.
You obviously only want that credit card information at your disposal not the credit card address. Your only purpose is to pretend to be for Canada business while taking the loonies and running just like the rest
