Id say something white or a light colour with a bit of pattern but not to much as to distract the reader.
try visitng this website and creating a background.

The sky really is the limit since you've selected such a simple style, however I suggest avoiding tiling your background and if you select something on the busier side it's a good idea to add some translucency to it in a photo editor. Have fun with it!

Drummer, how about looking around at some other sites to see what you like yourself? You could start with the Yola "featured sites" and see if anything appeals to you. You could even try out a few background colors and see if you like anything. I very much agree with Laura that a "busy" background is a bad idea but that still leave you with lots of choices.

With your template, a background will show through the entire content area so you will want something light that won't make it difficult to read. Or you could make the content in semi-transparent boxes--I'll have to take some time to find the code-it's somewhere on this forum. Another possibility is to make a header that would add some color to the page--will have to think about that one too. Another possibility is the Burlap template is good for backgrounds and keeps the content area white--it has a horizontal menu though. Here are some good links for backgrounds: (free version is non-commercial use only)
