SynthaSite has two offices, one in Cape Town, South Africa and one in San Francisco, USA. So the staff answering will be from one of those places, or at least located there...

I'm in Pennsylvania (US)...soon to be South Carolina. My results are still the same. Oddly, when I'm at work and I use FireFox, Boomer comes up #4. When I'm at home and use Google Chrome, Boomer comes up #3. Me thinks Google likes Boomer better than FireFox! =) Now if I can just automatically filter Boomer's traffic to my glenbramlittcreations...that would be the bomb...which would go boom...which in turn would be a boomer. =)

Boomer -I just noticed you'd mentioned ewebcounter. Are you having problems with it? I've noticed that the time for which people visit my site isn't in conjunction with real time. Also, it's not recording the stats of every single visit I'm getting. What kind of problems are you having?

These are the questions/concerns I have regarding the contest:

1) I believe that opening up voting to users will skew the votes due to obvious friendships that were established here online, creating an unfair advantage to the newcomers.

2) Is this contest more about TRAFFIC or is it about the website and its DESIGN? If site traffic is a deciding factor than what about the people (like me)
who is new to this site and is currently still building their website?

I'm not trying to offend anybody, but I'm a very blunt person and these are honest concerns I have. This is a contest, and I am working hard to try and at least be one of the finalists, as I'm sure many of you are.

I just want there to be a FAIR and unbiased judging system. Not friends who are voting for friends strictly based on that fact.

THANK YOU! I truly love reading what all of you have to say, and I personally have checked every single site that has been posted on the forums and I love them all!

Hi Jayyou.

I hope you're enjoying your time here so far. I can totally respect your concerns...though if it eases your mind at all...I think as opposed to being biased and off track with our votes, everyone in here is just more so really supportive of one another. I honestly don't think you'll have anything to worry about in terms of voting and the results to come. Good luck in the running!

Hi jayyou

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

1) Judging is always a tricky process. If we had a panel of judges making the final decision, there would probably be questions about their objectivity as well. While a panel of judges will select the finalists, by allowing users to vote we are trying to make the final outcome as fair as possible. Keep in mind that we are opening up the competition to our entire userbase, not just the people who participate in this forum. I doubt that any friendships formed here would be sufficient to alter the outcome of the vote. I also have tremendous faith in our community to vote for the best, whether the site belongs to one of their friends or not ;-) I have noticed that this community is very affirming of new comers and is impressed by quality sites, regardless of who the creator is!

2) The sites will be judged on their quality, not the amount of traffic they receive. We want new site builders to have the same opportunity as established sites.

See this clause from our rules:

5. JUDGING: All entries will be judged by a panel of experts based on the following equally weighted judging criteria: visual appeal of site, focused purpose, and/or innovative use of widgets. The panel of experts will select finalists, who will then be voted on online by the public. Voting will be limited to one vote per user, by means of cookie tracking. In the event of a tie, the two tying Web sites will be put back online for a final round of public voting and the Web site with most votes will be declared the winner. In the event that no winning entries are received, no prize will be awarded. Decisions of judges are final and binding. Winners will be notified by email

We encourage you to continue to work hard on your site. It looks great!

We will do our best to make sure that every entrant has a fair and equal chance to win.

Hey sorry to have Santa be the one to be opinionated but I feel this forum is for helping others and not for offering paid services. There are more than likely hundreds or thousands of other website designers, graphic artists and web related members who have built sites and to have all of them including their services here in the help forums would in my opinion cheapen the free service offered by Synthasite and turn it into a craigslist.

If it becomes a place that people sign up just to try to sell their wares or services I for one would have to rethink my participation here helping others. I spend hours and sometimes days answering questions to better the collective and would much rather continue helping and get those who have problems over them and onto happy site building.

I love the fact that you guys offer your most valuable service at such a reduced rate and that you can do what you do (VERY TALENTED) and again I hate to be the one who has issue but I cannot dismiss all those here who feel as I. I have seen many other forums go from wonderful places to being awash in business related offerings and I simply don't want that to happen here. Everything big always starts small and if the topic can be discussed at the beginning then it has a likelihood of not growing into a giant. As this is not the first time offers have been made for services here I don't want you to feel like you are being singled out. I merely wish to begin a dialog and put it to the forum to decide as to whether it should be allowed. In one "Lithuanian language" forum I was a member someone posted a services folder and it got filled fast then another was opened and it got filled even faster and by now there are ads in each and every folder (thousands of ads) there and the forum owner had let the cat out of the bag and cannot do anything about it other then shut his site down. The forum was about Lithuania and now its about a million things that have nothing to do with Lithuania. Sad but that happens and I just would find that to be a pity if it happens here.

Just some thought from Ed or Santa whoever you talk to...

Happy site building
ED

Hi Glen

I don't think you need go that far to prove yourself. We already know that you are a good guy and don't feel the need to offer your valuable service for free just to be here in the forums. Your time is money and if you went that route you would have hundreds or more people asking you to draw them something. Never know I may have been in that group ;)

But it is good that you offered and shows a great deal about your character and your desire to help others. It is good to have you here.

Your presence, opinions and thoughts are just as valuable a resource as any service or HTML knowledge... Keep that in mind ;)

Hey Glen, don't feel bad.
You got to admit Ed does have a point though.
A lot of us have our own businesses and are trying to create websites
to promote these businesses. We all try to help one another to create
better websites. You don't need to be an HTML boffin to help out.
Give someone a link to a cool program or piece of software you found.
It comes back to you ten fold my friend, I promise you.
Must be free though - we don't like to pay for anything thats why we're here. LOL
Make money from your site - as much as possible.

Please don't think you are being singled out. Lets rather set the ground rules now before it gets out of control. It's our forum after all.

This is an interesting discussion. Ed and Boomer: thank you for expressing your views about what is appropriate in this forum, while being affirming and tactful at the same time. We want to respect the rights of the community to govern itself, and if this is something you feel strongly about and can motivate (and I think you have) then we should honor that. Here is a compromise I can suggest: It is ok to post links to your site if you are making a contribution to the discussion at the same time (as everyone on this thread has done). Any direct advertising of services or items for sale should be placed on your own site. That way we all get to discuss our sites, and show them off without allowing this forum to become an "advertising" space.
Take a look at the Get Satisfaction community guidelines. This one is particularly relevant:
No hawking!

This is a community, not a baseball stadium. It's okay to talk up the products or services you love (or sell), but only if it's relevant to the conversation. If you're here to plant a ton of links to your Web site without doing much else, your comments will likely be flagged as spam or "crass commercialism."
I definitely don't think anyone on this thread is engaging in "crass commercialism" but I also think it is a good idea to steer as far clear as possible of this while still allowing people to share their sites.

Nicely put Monique,
I was also trying to explain about advertising on your site and pointing to
it rather than advertising directly. Couldn't seem to word it properly and then
lost the whole reply when I refreshed my browser.
I re-typed my reply very lazely and when I came back Ed had already answerd.
Nicely put Ed and M.

Initially, I was just being nice and figured I'd offer up something different to SynthaSite folks. I wasn't trying to exploit and try to get free advertising. I forget who it was...maybe Guido that said your work will sell itself. I just merely figured, "hey, thanks to everyone on here so as a thanks...this is what I'm going to do..."

I'll admit I was taken aback at first, but yes, you have a point. So, I'll retract my advertising statement and just merely say that I've made a special announcement on my website as a thanks to the SynthaSite website builder population.

I guess my other thought is that me saying I offer commissions for portraiture versus go visit my website...is essentially the same to me. The only difference is that instead of telling you here and making you go to my site (if you so choose) is that I got credit for you visiting my site. Now I know one of you are itching to say, "all the more reason why you shouldn't say what you're selling...to get more traffic!" But again, I think they are the same thing. If what you are saying stands, then i'm understanding that people can post their site, but not say what they are selling/offering. With that said, i'm also understanding that this site (synthasite.com) and these forums are solely for creating websites...not promoting. Which in itself could be argued because if someone posts their site, they are essentially advertising their site, which is essentially what I did. Mine was more of an announcement that I appreciate everything the forums provide and I wanted to give something as a thanks.

Anyways, point taken and I completely understand.

I think it's really important to not turn this place into a money making machine for others to profit while we have so many individuals willing to volunteer their time and energy. And I'll be the first to tell you how much I appreciate and value everyone here. In turn, I have recommended this site to several of my friends and given everyone here a really high rating.

In saying this, I do feel a little bad for Glen. I didn't interpret his offer as a way of collecting funds for himself. I actually think he was just trying to offer a genuine reduced rate for us; considering it a favour. I didn't see his offer as a way to commercialize himself and I think he was being authentic by trying to do something nice for those who'd of been interested.

I understand everyone's point of view, and I agree with all that's been said. All contributions should remain within the boundaries of this foundation. However, I personally want to thank Glen for the offer in any case. For simply just trying to be nice.

@Boomer. I am not sure I agree that services offered here should always be free. For example SynthaSite offers a service that is not free (domain registration). While site building and hosting with SynthaSite will always be free, there might be great services related to website building that some people would choose to invest in - I see no reason why we couldn't mention those services here. Some people may appreciate a referral to a great service that can solve a particular problem or meet a certain need even if there is a fee involved. If it is relevant and helpful, and you know of such a service I see no reason not to share this information.

I agree. This forum is for helping others and not for offering paid services. Absolutely, 110% I concur with you guys. I just think we were a little too quick to assume Glen's intentions, that's all. And for me, that's what this thread is all about. Because I honestly don't think he would have opposed community feelings if it were otherwise. But, having said that...at least members will know where we stand on this issue now.

Again to Glen

Thanks for being a great guy... I saw your work and it is amazing. I was that good 20 years ago and all I can say is never put the pencil down man. Not even for a year because my drawing ability went poof and I wish I had your gift now...

I have to agree with Monique about not everything offered to others as free. For example I have spent the last 6 hours going through hundreds of websites looking for a easy to use and high quality image magnification tool for a fellow member who is a professional artist to properly showcase his work without the end result looking too cheap and unprofessional. I have dozens of free tools that yes will work but are so user unfriendly that the average member would cring at seeing the code I have ;).

After testing many I came to the conclusion that a UK company with a paid service ($20 for a commercial license) would be his best bet. As I have seen this very tool used on multimillion dollar company sites I know that it would work for him quite nicely and show off his most excelent artwork in the professional manner he wishes. After running the tool through its paces I will determine if it is something that I feel comfortable sharing. Then I will post the product URL as well as the top 3 others and offer a comparison of all for him to make the final determination.

Now as I get nothing but satisfaction out of helping another from researching for 6 hours or sharing I feel that this is the spirit of the act that we should adhere to in the forums. Synthasite offers a paid service this is true. However, I feel that it is like comparing apples to oranges and any product that Synthasite offers is rightfully due and deserving of the company which has so graciously allowed us the ability to build our sites for free.

And to again reiterate... Both your works are amazing and I am happy to have you here in the forums and as fellow site builders. I may be coming to you for your talents in the not so distant future.

Keep up your great work ;)

Happy site building
Ed

Hi Gareth,

I am sorry friend but the contest is only open to those 18 years of age or older.

There are legality reasons for the (18 or older) and the winner has certain obligations that she or he has to fulfill before claiming the prize and valuable resources offered by our esteemed host Vinny.

I hope that doesn't spoil your fun here building your site... You never know maybe they will soon have a under 18 contest ;)

Hi there, Gareth. Don't let this fact deter you, though. You'll still have an awesome time, and based on all the knowledge and help from everyone around here, you'll no doubt create a fantastic site. Synthasite is a brilliant facilitator and the community's awesome. And who knows, as Ed had mentioned..maybe in time a competition for under 18's will be introduced.

Dearest ED,

I think that you are completely over analyzing what was offered through Glen and I's posts. I was simply showing gratitude towards a free service and felt kind enough to offer my services to "SynthaSite Users" only at a Highly Discounted rate. That meant that I would be doing THEM a favor, not ME a favor by advertising my services. You're suggesting that I made a cheap advertisement through this forum, and I take offense to that statement. I am a very successful Freelance Web Designer and I've achieved that success through strict word of mouth and referrals. I've seen many attempts to "name drop" personal websites on SynthaSite which YOU and BOOMER have both participated in. For example:

Boomer "I'm loving this - Hey guys, while you on that synthasite.com
page, just click on forsite. (Google notices these things you know)"

Now what would you say that is implying?

Enough said....

I don't have much more time to defend my actions over such an unnecessary comment on your part so I'll get to my main point.

GLEN: You did a very nice thing. I personally bookmarked your website and plan on contacting you for future work. Because you are talented and I support anyone who wants to go the extra mile to help someone out.

ED: Don't think so hard next time. I completely understand your point, and it's a great one. But no need to draw attention to someone's post when it was done strictly out of an act of kindness. Not everybody needs so badly the traffic from SynthaSite users.... (sorry)

BOOMER: Nothing in life is free. SynthaSite will surely be making their fair share of profits in time for their services offered. I work to hard and care about my work too much to tarnish it by offering it for free.

SYNTHASITE: I love you guys! I plan on in the future developing a company targeted towards the use of synthasite (we'll talk soon...) Thank you for your services and your dedication to customer service. We all value this forum and will treat it respectfully.

Thank you and have a great night!

Just to make it abundantly clear to everyone else who is to read this...

Out of months on the forum and the nearly 700 replies and hundreds and hundreds of hours of my own time helping fellow members (FOR FREE) I have in all this time said dozens and dozens of times go here to this page I have created to find a tutorial I wrote especially for you and your problem and or file you need. I have created countless pages and sites just to example a fix or how to do something for someone else.

NEVER once have I said go here and buy this program or please sign up for this or that. Not once...

Just to let you know... My first comment and reply on this topic was in fact to keep another member from posting their much more opinionated thoughts and as I am a frequent fixture here in the forums I thought it best to keep that other from posting theirs and rewrite it so that it would not be as harshly taken. Sadly, either way it was... I am however glad it was me who had taken the heat for saying it because not only are they a good person and don't need the grief but I am a big boy and can handle some harsh words from another without the need to retaliate or be condescending.

My opinion is not so dissimilar to theirs and I leave what I wrote as it stands. Lets not let this snowball any further and lets not get defensive or say something which defames the character of two members here who help above all others. I help others daily with their problems and will continue to do so until I cannot or I see something which would make me not do so. Offers for service is sadly high on my list...

It never really was a concern of mine other than for enjoyment but for your information these are my stats. I put it to you... Besides some of the reps I have the most replies of any member here and have filled in when I knew the reps were either away or busy with bug fixes or working on updates. Find another who has helped as I and not said check this site or that program out...

* You have started 48 topics. 161 people are following them.
* You have made 674 replies. They have been marked useful a total of 34 times.

Out of over 30 employees only 3 have higher replies than me as a member (they have months and nearly a year longer at it than I do). Out of all the members and all the employees I have started the most topics to help others with things I have learned. Out of all the members and all the employees I have the most members following my replies. I have members come to me for help and by your comments of me name dropping to get traffic I don't want any of them who read each and every one of my posts to try to better there own sites to think I do it for any reason other than to help them. Please don't put false doubt into their heads. As far as traffic hunting here in the forums goes... Why would Boomer or myself need the traffic of a few hundred when we both are featured on the company home page and get the traffic that they do? I think we get more than enough site traffic and requests for help in our mailbox to keep us occupied long into the night. I personal have more requests than time in the day and cannot fall asleep until the majority I get are answered.

Please take my words shared so that another member did not have to as an opinion of what we don't want to see this forum turn into. That's it... There was no attack on either of you. It was simply something that you had stated that had this individual bothered and then another followed your lead in offering their services. This person and I just thought to catch it before it turned into something more...

That's my two cents and all she wrote so to speak. I do wish you well and hope that we can be friends... Your valuable knowledge is going to benefit so many here and I know that you will have quite the following reading your every word...

I hope this doesn't ruin any chance of you doing some artwork for me... I quite enjoyed your work especially (babyschwag) ;)

I just want to ask, is the judging depends solely on the result of public volting?

Thank you.

I went over the T&C's etc the other day. I could be very wrong, though I think public nominations is just a representative vehicle for Synthasite judges. Once we've done all of the voting, I think they will then discuss and decide the winner based on their unanimous decision. Like I said, I could have misunderstood what I was reading and be completely wrong. Though if I'm right...at the end of the day, how many times we vote for someone or how many votes that person receives from the public -it won't affect the outcome. Actually, I think this is what Charlene mentioned the other day.

So, voting is just one of the criteria that the judges may look into and the final decision will still be from them themselves?

I believe so... Though if I'm just talking a lot of bollocks; someone will correct me.

Yep...I just had a look at Charlene's reply to one of my questions a few days ago. If you scroll up further you'll see my question to Charlene asking if we're allowed to nominate for more than one site. And you'll see her reply there. I voted for four in the end...It was honestly just too hard to vote for one site. There are so many good ones.

Every time I go back to your site it looks better and better each time. And thanks...I'm not really aiming for it to be the best site or anything, though. I just want to be able to cater to the concepts that I have floating around my head; I still have so much more to do. That's not to say that I'm not competitive or anything; I'm just a lot more competitive with sports and stuff...this is more of a personal process for me more than anything else. Anyway, too much information. I must be getting tired. But keep up the good work anyhow. You're doing awesome, girl.

I think everyone's entitled to an opinion..I honestly do...and this place should be no different to any other place..but there's just too much drama for me so I'm going to take a wee break from coming here. I think you guys are awesome, but I could get this in any universal chat room. Be nice to one another and catch you all in a while x

Everyone have a happy drama-less day!!!

Someone mentioned Gimp earlier. I think Gimp is a very favorable program. I have photoshop myself (LOVE IT!!!). I even got my wife using photoshop for her digital scrapbooking. Gimp is a great program though. I used it before getting my hands on Photoshop. If you're familiar with Photoshop, you should be able to figure out Gimp.

the opensource market is a blessing for people that can't afford (and refuse to pay the OUTRAGEOUS prices for software nowadays) mainstream software. Open Office is becoming a better office suite each time it releases a version. I considered the move to Open Office until Office 2007 came out. I'm a fan of the tabbing. Sue me.

I use Firefox pretty much all the time. It's faster than Internet Explorer and less susceptible to viruses. Although, I'm liking Google Chrome lately for internet browser. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's free and it's a great internet browser.

Back to my point...there are dozens of free tools to help with getting things prepared for your site and any other services you might provide personally. Check out PortableApps.com. That is a great location to get a lot of useful tools that are FREE *and* PORTABLE so that you can put them on a jump/thumb/usb drive/kiosk (whatever you prefer to call it). In particular, NVU is a website editing program. I know SynthaSite has an excellent user interface, but if you ever want to detach and do some editing, NVU is good for that. Audacity Portable is a great audio editing program. I'm working on an intro to my site with a short sound clip...so I've been using Audacity for that.

Regarding the intro...my goal is that when you visit my site, I want a short intro clip to play (like 5 to 10 seconds) and then when the clip is over, my site how it is now is left showing. Anyone know how to do this? Have I lost anyone on what I'm trying to explain?

I know I ended up going off on a tangent and probably should have started a new topic, but it was the next thing in my busy mind after talking about Free programs!

Thanks for all that Glen,
I can't help with the flash intros as I've never needed to use it yet.
Ed seems to be the pro in this dept.

Glen,
are you trying to embed a Flash intro into your page?

yes, I believe that is what I'm looking for. Can we embed flash on our SynthaSite sites? I know there are some limitations on html coding and I wasn't sure if this was one of them.

Basically, I want a flash intro. I'm envisioning an intro of a few of my pictures motioning across the page somehow and then ending with my logo and slogan. All this takes place 5 to 10 seconds and then the visitor is at my main page. Make sense?

Hi glen

I wish I could stay up longer to answer this one for you but I am working on a 23 hour day on the comp so I am going to have to share what I know about flash intro popups on page load this evening.

If you can manage to wait I can help you then.

I know this is off topic...but i wanted to share with everyone what I've been doing the last few days to show 1) how much I like the blogging function synthasite now has, 2) Why I haven't posted in the last few days, 3) why I think my site is a good candidate, and 4) just cuz I like bragging and my latest airbrush piece is off the chain!!

As always, site critiques are welcome. Do the pages load slow? Any suggestions for a better layout? Maybe a third-party imaging program? I need to be able to show off my pictures, but I don't want to overload my site.
