I thought that I had Yola Free for a non-profit venture, as I have never paid a subscription. But I have just received an email telling me that I have Yola Bronze, and it expires in 60 days. If I do nothing will my account revert to Yola Free or just disappear?

Hi Paul,

If you don't do anything to pay for a Bronze Subscription in 60 days it will downgrade to Yola free.

If you have any custom domains with your account then these will be unpublished as well. These will be retained and you can then publish the content to a yolasite sub-domain for free. You are allowed 2 yolasite-subdomains per free account The conditions of publishing to custom domains changed and now you need a hosting plan to enable publishing of custom domains; either Bronze or Silver.

Hi Gop,
Thanks for the rapid response. I am not sure whether my domain is a custom domain or not. How can I tell? It was set up within Yola, and is called www.neworkshop.co.uk. I would like to retain this domain name.

Hello Paul,

I suspect that this is a GBBO setup originally. (I'm not sure: .co.uk domains are used by GBBO) but the subsequent renewals are different to the primary registration.

I suggest sending an email to support@yola.com on this issue. Apologies for sending you further afield.

Hello Paul

A custom domain name is one that will only include the name that you choose for it. As opposed to this, Yola Free users can use free Yola subdomains which will always include ".yolasite.com", so those are domains you can't customize.

Gop was suspecting correctly – you are using Yola as a GBBO (Get British Business Online) user. This currently means that you get a custom .co.uk domain for free for 2 years (which you have got), but the Yola Bronze package you get will only be free for one year. This is why you got the reminder to renew your Yola Bronze hosting package which will expire in July.

If you'd like to keep your website published to your domain neworkshop.co.uk, you will need to renew Yola Bronze from July.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks, Stefan.
I think that means that I must pay for Yola Bronze from July if I want to keep the domain name.
Does it also mean that I will eventually have to pay for the domain name as well? Is that also to Yola, or does someone else own it?
Paul.

Hello Paul

Yes, that's correct. After on year Yola Bronze for free it will then become a paid feature. The same goes for your custom domain after two years.

You are the owner of your custom domain as long as it is registered for you with the domain provider. The domain provider we partner with is OpenSRS. You would only lose ownership if you let it expire.

Using a custom domain is most probably never free forever with any service provider. Inlcuded with a promotion, domains can be offerred for free for a limited period of time and will eventually become paid products.

With Yola you will also need to purchase a hosting package to be able to publish your Yola website to your custom domain. When your hosting package expires, you cannot publish your website to your custom domain any more. Our hosting packages Yola Bronze and Yola Silver offer you a lot of fantastic and useful features to add value to your website. For more information please see our tutorials:

Thanks, Stefan.
It is becoming a bit clearer, but not totally! My understanding is:
1. If I don't pay the Yola Bronze renewal fee my account will revert to Yola Free, which does not allow me to use my domain name (so my website will disappear).
2. If I do pay, I can use the website and domain name for a year.
3. The following year I will have to pay a Bronze renewal fee AND a hosting fee.
In case 3, can you give me an idea of what the hosting fee is likely to be?
Also, just so that I am clear, if Yola Bronze does not include hosting, how does it differ from free website construction software?
Also, is there a way of paying for hosting a Yola Free site without having to pay for Yola Bronze?
Thanks for your help.
Paul.

Hi Paul,

Q1: Yes. The account will revert to a Yola free account. Your site will no longer be published to your domain neworkshop.co.uk. The content file however will still be available in your Yola account just not published on the web.

Q2: If you pay the hosting fee (Bronze or Silver) you can publish your site to your custom domain (neworkshop.co.uk) as long as the custom domain is also paid up for. These two things are independent and separate. ie: your hosting plan and your domain payment.

Q3: "The following year I will have to pay a Bronze renewal fee AND a hosting fee." Correct.

Q3(ii)can you give me an idea of what the hosting fee is likely to be?
Currently the Bronze fee is $4.95 per month. Cheaper for an annual fee single payment

Q3 (iii) if Yola Bronze does not include hosting, how does it differ from free website construction software
Yola Bronze hosting potentially allows publishing to a custom domain. It depends on the reality of a custom domain being made available for your use. This is limited by your purchase of a custom domain. Custom domains are available from a large number of providers including Yola through partnership and many other companies.

Q3(iv)"...is there a way of paying for hosting a Yola Free site without having to pay for Yola Bronze?". The Free Yola plan does not require any payment. This program allows you only to use yolasite sub-domains eg"mysite.yolasite.com". These sub-domains are free and with the Yola free subscription you may publish 2 sites to free sub-domains.

Hello Paul

Ok, I think now you've got a few things a bit confused :-), so I'm trying to explain again:

Our hosting packages are Yola Bronze and Yola Silver. Custom domains and hosting packages are separate products. When you buy a domain, you can choose which hosting package you would like to add, either Yola Bronze or Yola Silver. You will need to choose one of the hosting packages to publish your Yola website to your custom domain. If you have Yola Free, you cannot use your custom domain to publish your website, but you can use a free yolasite subdomain.

So, to answer your questions:
  1. If you do not renew your Yola Bronze hosting package or upgrade to the Yola Silver hosting package again, your website will be unpublished as soon as your current Bronze package expires, which will be in July. Your account will be downgraded to Yola Free. You could then publish your site only to a yolasite subdomain, but you will not be able to publish your site to your custom domain any longer.

  2. If you renew Bronze or upgrade to Silver, you will be able to keep your website published to your custom domain.

  3. When your domain expires next year and your hosting package expires at the same time, you will need to both renew your hosting package (Bronze or Silver) and your domain registration. At the moment you can renew your .co.uk domain for a period of two years only (not for one year). The current fee for having your co.uk domain for two years is GBP12.95.

So to sum it up: As the domain registration period is always two years, you will need to renew your domain every 2 years and renew your hosting package every year.

For comparing our packages please see our pricing page which will reflect the major differences: Yola Package Pricing.

For a detailed list of features of our two hosting packages please click on these links:

I hope that this makes sense to you and that you will decide to continue with Yola in July.
