Hi Mikhaila

Yes.. you can see if the domain name is available first before actually creating your website.

1. Log in as usual, then click on "Create a new site"

2. Choose your design and click on "next".

3. Give your site a name and then click on "choose a web address".

4. Then select which type of web address you want:
~ Professional
~ Standard
~ Own Domain

If you choose Professional or Standard (Free), then you will be given an area to type in the domain name you want and check it's availability by clicking on "check availability".

If the name you've selected is not available, it will say "is not available" and you can enter in a new name. If it is available, then you can decide if you want to click on "use this address" or "choose again" to enter a new name.

I hope this makes sense. Please feel free to ask for further clarification if needed. =)

Thanks Littleus,
That is probably the best way to see if your domain/subdomain is free.

Mikhaila, If you are wanting to use a professional domain you can also use to see if the domain you want has been registered.(Note this won't work for free subdomains)

yes it is possible via whois search. If the domain name is already registered the whois search give the details of the owner of that domain name . If it does not register you can simply register where you want . to search the whois details and register a domain name visit
