I find that the name I have chosen for my site, although attracting visitors, is not getting the traffic it should, I am considering changing the name, can you tell me what is involved and would I need to re-validate the site under the new name.

Choose "publishing settings" from the "Publish" menu. You will be given the option to change your domain name. However, please note that changing your domain name releases your old domain name to be registered by other users and your customers will get an error message because your site is no longer ther.

I would say your best bet is to recreate your sites index (Home) page exactly and use another name of your choosing to name the new site then use a navigation bar to link your new page to your old one then you would never loose those customers that go to your first address.

If that does not work for you there is a more difficult way but I found that this is the easiest.

I can help you create a quick nav bar if you supply certain info...

Hi Ed, thanks for the advice, being a bit of a novice at this type of thing I would appreciate some more advice on how to create a new index page and how to make the navigation bar to link then both together.

Go here and right click and save the file on the bottom of the page that says doggy code then open the file in it you will see a bunch of code...

Select all and then copy all the code into an Widgetbox widget on top or bottom of your new sites index page then update your site

the buttons you see on the page are the buttons

They cannot be next to the Home button on your new site because they are not attached to the new page but are only attached to your old site

These buttons are because you wished to keep the old site because you said you get traffic there as well so if these buttons are not going to work then what I would then do is spend some time the next week and make the new site even better than the old one and make your old site into a jump off page with an intro banner with a link to your new site connected to it

how long have you had this first site?

I have had the first site for about two months. Your suggestion sounds like a good idea and I will work on that. Although I would not have a clue about how to "make your old site into a jump off page with an intro banner with a link to your new site connected to it". I really appreciate the time you are taking to help with this. Jim

all you need to do is after you have your new site looking as good as you can get it and are ready to do the switch over simply take a picture of one of your favorite dogs and use an image widget into the center of a blank index page of your old site. Underneath it type in large letters "ENTER SITE" and then use the "choose a link" feature in the Content sidebar... Enter your new sites url

Aha also don't forget to highlight "ENTER SITE" in the text widget and select the "Insert link" button in the menu bar to insert the url to your new site and then update your old site after you delete all your other pages.

sorry I am too sleepy for this and I hope that made sense

I tried your site as requested and I got in without any problems both times.
I have now transferred all my stuff from the old site to the new one and then added the link in my old site as you suggested all seems to be working AOK. Again thank you so very much. Jim

Thank you for the comments, it did seem a shame to delete all the hard work you did for me on the buttons, but after changing my old site they just linked to non existant pages.
Your site is fantastic and as you say big, but there again you are offering a much wider service than I am and with much more information needed to be passed on. Ed thank you again from the bottom of my heart, you have made what seemed like an impossible task seem easy. Jim

Shep

you can only get better with time and experience and I am sure that you will fill out your site before too long. Just make sure that your images are always under say 100kb and if you need to display larger use flickr or photobucket for a slideshow

Monique I've often wondered what your sites looks like??????????

I had a site once, but I didn't feed it, so it died! I think I will need to take a holiday so that I can explore my dreams for my own websites. I used to do animal behaviour and training, partly as a hobby but also as a business and got involved with SynthaSite while building a site to promote this! So Shep2389 and I have something in common. . .

some 30 years ago my family was a breeder of Basenji in Chicago Illinois http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basenji

At any one time we would have dozens

What good times huh

I would love to have another which were the offspring of the ones we raised
