If I click on one of my thumbnails, I expect to get an enlarged version of the photo. However, I get only rather small photos instead. Is this something I can fix? I am uploading fairly small sizes so they don't take forever to load....could that be the problem?
Your exploded image sizes are controlled by the physical canvas size of your originals. They won't be any bigger than your originals.
The issue of image size for optimisation of download time is not a function of physical dimension but rather the size of the file in bytes. You can have the same image at say 800 by 500 pixels as a file size of 50Kb or the same physical size image at a file size of 1Mb. The displayed images will both appear as the same size. Most of the file content in the larger image would be redundant but still occupies file space and will take much longer to load. You won't notice any difference visually.
