Coding for scrollers, cursors etc etc...i'm lost

Yep it's me back again after a few days away to try start with a clear mind, have put the Paypal woes behind for a while longer but now I find another....lol.

So I found a place where they have a great selection of features i'd love to incorporate into my site, scrollers (both text and image scrollers), change the cursor to something funky, or have those cool effect mouse thingys that follow you around or on elastic (you know what I mean??).

So anyway they provide the code (yes I know wording needs to be changed) BUT how does a person get the coding onto the website? I thought this will be too easy ....yeah right :(

It says "insert the code in the section or "then inside the BODY section" ....sheesh.

I went to the HTML widget and pasted the copied code, hit save, ok so where did this code go ???? cyber space me thinks cos I can't find it.....lol.

Tried another way (which even I kinda knew was not going to work but what the heck), copy and pasted the code onto my page....of course all I got was all the mumbo jumbo printed on my page....

So, my question/s are please, how and where can I get some of the things I want to add to my site (a scroller, both text and images), change my cursor, the 'trailing' type of cursor effects etc etc etc)

Thank you in advance, yes I did as always do a 'search' first to see if I could get my answers, yes it did say you can't access the area but there has to be a way I can get some of these things on my site.

**PS: some of these seem to be javascript or had .js thingies, does this make a difference, i'm completely clueless.

Hello Indi

Great questions you're asking and it sounds like you're really stretching yourself here and are determined to learn new things. I think that's great!

For a code to work, it is dependent on what all the files are required to make it work. Some it's just straight HTML code. Others require .js files or other programming languages to make the code work.

It is possible that the one that you have selected requires more than just the HTML part. If it requires .js files, then you do need to have Yola Silver to upload the .js file to your File Manager and link to them.

Do you have the URL of a particular code that you want to use? I could take a look and see what all the requirements are and let you know how to set it up.

Ok, thanks Sanja, most are from the Dynamic Drive site, I looked at the scrollers and all the other fun and exciting things I thought might jazz up my site a bit more and make it fun....I'll give you the link to the Dynamic Drive site (which you probably already have)

http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicin...

I actually have to just pop out for about an hour but will come back and just give you a list of the names of the mouse/cursor and scrollers I'd like to consider using and if you could look at those and tell me which would work within Yola that would be great.

I will soon be buying my custom doman from Yola but depending how i'm going to storage and other things i'm not sure how far in the future before I might update to Silver.

Back asap.....thanks :)

Hi Indi

I took a look at quite a few of the cursor codes and I'd say that most of them you can just copy the code and put directly into your HTML Widget. They do not seem to require any other kind of files to help make it run.

Just be sure to follow all the steps. For each new box that you see on DD (Dynamic Drive), you need a new HTML Widget.

If you are still struggling with this, please do let me know and I'll be happy to help further.

Ok thank you :) I just quickly wrote a smallish (yeah right) of some favourites i'd like to try and possibly use but some did say about adding the codes to the BODY of putting it in the and i'm lost, so will these work, I did try using a html widget but I didn't get any dancing stars or elastic trailing cursor things.

Here are some of the things I'm interested in if you could please look for me :)

MOUSE & CURSORS

* Elastic Trail Script
* Custom Cursor Script
* Magic Wand Cursor
* Dancing Stars Cursor
* Fancy Cursor Script

SCROLLERS

* Cross Browser Marquee
* SAG Content Crawler (*** I really need an image scroller if possible)
* Text and Image Crawler
* Featured content Slider

I won't push my luck, too much fun stuff there but I did try a few as I mentioned but with no luck because I don't know what they mean by placing it in the BODY or adding the script in the area.

Thank you in advance....I'll be back asap.

Hello Indi

Whenever they say that add it to the body of your site, just add to an HTML Widget and place on your page.

If you can post the page URL and the code you've decided to use, then I can take a look and see what's going on.

Hi Indi! If you want a custom cursor, this is done with CSS. Here is the code:

<style type="text/css">
body {
cursor: url(http://advimages.nexon.net/MapleStory..., auto;
}
A {
cursor: url(http://advimages.nexon.net/MapleStory..., auto;
}
</style>

The cursor I have in there right now is the one on this site: http://www.nathansmusicstudio.cz.cc

If you want your own, just replace the first URL with the cursor you want when they are moving the mouse around and the second one with the cursor you want to display when someone rolls over a link. Also, if you don't want a custom cursor and you just want to control what kind it is (Like Pointer, or hand) then take out url(http://...), auto; on both parts and then right after "cursor:" you can put like Pointer or Cursor or something.

If this is confusing please let me know

Thanks!
Nathan

Thanks Nathan and Sanja, sorry time got away yesterday.

I will check out your code later today Nathan when I have some free puter time, however, I have just now quickly gone back to the Dynamics site to find the features I would like that I am still having great trouble with if you don't mind helping me :)

I did figure out a couple of things by myself so that in itself is an achievement....lol.

Ok, in the MOUSE & CURSOR area, the one called "Elastic Trail Script" , it has like about 8 little blue balls/bullets that follow the cursor. I saved the lil blue bullet like it said, when it said to "upload file into same directory as where your webpage resides" I figured I just upload this to my fle manager area ???? yes/no ???? anyhow that's what I did.

I then copied and pasted the code to a HTML widget.....nope, won't work :( tells me I have an error but i'm lost anyhow in what STEP 2 is telling me to do....STEP 2 - add below code to the BODY section of your page IMMEDIATELY following the tag....

What on earth does that mean ????? All I want is the blue balls/bullet following my cursor....sheesh.....lmao.

Ok, so this next problem I hit many many times in the last 2 hours I've been playing.....I found some scrollers and also some text effect features I liked, every time I copied and pasted but changed their words to MY words or more my text I wanted when I went to SAVE it yells at me saying "Oops an error occured with your pasted javascript code, please check code" .

I'm guess this is because it says "javascript" and its not HTML so that won't work in a HTML widget ????????

One last thing then I have to get outside but will return later, when I was trying some text effects I see the code to copy BUT then the next bit about "wrapping text or something or other in the span tag" - geez :(

Right, maybe a few hours outside in the sunshine this Sunday morning might clear my head and I shall return.

Once again, thank you Nathan i'l definately check out your code... OH OH OH I love the finger one that wiggles or bendy points when it hovers over a link/url....love it, how do I get me one of those :)

Thank you helpful people.

Hi INDI, you can paste Javascript into the html widget. I have pasted 100's of javascripts in the html widget! When it shows that note (It does that to me too) just click "Ok" or something similar and your code will be saved. It does it to me all the time, sometimes it takes a while for the alert message to popup, but, just wait 2-30 seconds and then the alert should pop up and click ok.

Hi, first, if you want the mouse trails, visit : http://www.htmlbasix.com/mousetrails.... This website (www.htmlbasix.com) has a lot of useful codes and stuff that you are wanting like "Colored scroll bar"and stuff like that. Just visit that website and there is 3 drop down boxes. Click on the middle one and that is a lot of generators including mouse trials, mouse cursors, javascripts, and so much more! If you need more help let me know. Thanks

Hello Indi

You were correct in uploading your image to your File Manager. Be sure though to change the image path in your code to where your image is located. Your image path will most likely be like this: http://resources/yourimage.jpg or you can include your domain name like this: http://yoursite.yolasite.com/resource...

If you see that javascript error - you can just navigate to another page and come back - and the error message should be gone. It's just one of those little idiosyncrasies.

As for Step 2 - adding just below the body tag. Please don't worry about that either. As I said, just add to another HTML Widget and put it below the first HTML Widget that you have added for Step 1.

If you still have trouble with this, you can email me at support@yola.com and I'll be happy to help you further.

But, you wouldn't include "http://" in front of "resources/..." part right? Because Http:// usually indicates another page. Am I correct?

Ooooooooook i'm back in here while I have some lunch....geez you people are smart :)

@ Sanja I wouldn't have figured that bit out about the image path, i'm not that clever and only just discovered all these great features a few days ago, it's made me completely re-think how i'm going to do my pages. I'll give it another shot but don't be surprised if you do get that email from me....lol, umm, although what URL will I use since i'm just playing and testing at the moment and my site is not published ????

I orginally started a site, now i've started 2 other TEST sites (why 2 I don't know) and i'm playing in there mostly until I can figure things out and actually see how they will look then as I'm happy with things I'll re-create it all on my actual site that hopefully some time this century will get published...lol.

@ Nathan, yup you definately deserve your champion badge, I want you to know how much I appreciate your help :) Some things take me longer to store in my brain but I do try and it's great to be able to come here and ask questions and have friendly people like yourself and the staff answer and guide me.

I will check out that link you gave me for the other generators, sounds like the place for me.

Also to both Sanja and Nathan, thank you for explaining the fact about the error I was getting when copy and pasting the code, I'll give that another try as well, if I still have problems I'll holla again don't you worry....lol.

Cheers

Hello Indi

Since your site is not published, you can just use "resources/yourimage.jpg".

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Ok, so I looked at the link for the mouse trailer...personally i'd prefer something a lil more discreet such as the lil blue bullet or there is 2 other trailers on the Dynamics site I like (and mind you I can actually get to work), I find having words/text is a bit distracting.

I went back to that damn blue bullet one, nope can't get it, I have the gif uploaded in my file manager area, I copy and pasted the code in a HTML widget but I can't see where in any of that mass of coding I even put the URL for the image path :(

Can someone take a look and tell me which/where/what pretty please :)

I can make my own marquee using animation shop cos I used to be a 'tagger' but don't do full on any more cos of time but I do a lot graphics just for myself and have done so for my site but if I can find something that is already done and it's a simple matter of copying code then it saves me time in making my own.

***PS: how come animated tags don't show up here? I was trying to show you a tag that included a marquee in it but animations don't show and it was gif, is it because I uploaded from 'My Pictures' and maybe not Photobucket ??

I think you have to use a flash object instead of a picture, click "(Some HTML aloud)" and you will see the available tags you can use. The very last one is flash.

No idea about that Nathan, it was just a gif, no biggy.

Well again I must apologise for my long absence....Sunday arvo and had things to do.

Something weird did occur though with that trailing cursor.....I still have no clue how to direct it to the image thingy BUT each time I had tried this earlier this morning and yesterday all I was left with was a very small square box in the widget area so I kept deleting the widget, now before when I tried and said i'd be back but got caught up outside, I just came back now and I must have left my window open on the 'preview' page of my site, well I moved my cursor and what do I have ???? not the blue bullets but a trail of lil boxes ......lol....not very flash but I got a trail ;) go figure....lol

@ Sanja, hi, sorry I just saw your reply after I made comment back @ Nathan.

I can't find where in that great lot of code I am to type the info in ??? so WHEN i find where to type the direction in I would type "resources/bullet.gif" yes ?? or am I actually typing exactly what you told me above?

Thank you again and I probably won't get back here now until tomorrow morning so i'll check back then.

@ Sanja, not sure how anyone could miss the email.....lol.....in the subject line I did this

>>>>>Sanja<<<<<

@ Nathan, I only have IE brower, I really don't want another browser (not puter savvy, don't like change and the top part of my puter screen already seems overtaken with stuff I don't even know how it got there without adding more....lol)

Each night before i close down I always go to tools>internet options> then do the cookies, temp files, history etc etc. Is cache different ???

Last night when I was working on my site I was uploading to the file manager and a number of times it just froze up and stopped uploading, the only way I could get out was the old Ctrl, Alt, Delete option :(

I'll sign out, reboot and resend email to Sanja.

Cheers - great way to start the day off and I only have an hour to spare just now till later :(
