I use a 2 column divider on various pages of my website and have clickable buttons in the left-hand column and my ECWID widget code in the right-hand column, all is well when viewed on a desktop/laptop but on a smart phone the left-hand column appears above the right-hand column is there anyway of getting the columns to sit side-by-side?

On a small or mobile screen, your columns will display vertically rather than horizontally because most visitors using mobile will not want to scroll horizontally on their phone screens.  This ensures that all of your content can be seen without requiring scrolling, so none of your content will be missed.
