Creating a 3D logo in Google Sketchup is not so difficult that it would take an expert but it will take some time getting to know the program. It is one of those "If you want it you have to learn it" tips...

I have been using Google Sketchup a FREE program to create 3D renderings of all my inventions for years and only thought to add it to my tips thread now because you can create some pretty cool 3D logos and add them to your banner instead of the typical 2D ones that the logo generators create.

Download Google Sketchup here: http://sketchup.google.com/

Here are some examples of what you can create that only took me 20 minutes total.

You see how simply using the Orbit tool you can change the orientation according to you the viewer. For that matter you can even take a picture of the back of your logo in reverse.

I haven't the time to write a tutorial or do a video so this one that I found on youtube will have to guide you as best it can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCa8vv...

I always create my Sketchup 3D logos inside a sphere with the inside painted white so that when I export as a JPG I can then open that JPG in GIMP and make the white background transparent to then save them as a transparent PNG. Once they are transparent I can overlay them on top of an image.

Here is my sphere already with an example inside of it. http://www.honeybearplayhomes.com/res...

First you must download and install Google Sketchup then open my sphere template above.

Play around with the Orbit tool (Step 11 from below) and use your mouse roller to zoom inside the sphere to orbit around the Honey Bear Playhomes text.

To create your own simply:

1) Click "Tools" and select "3D Text"
2) Enter your text and select your font
3) Enter 10' for the height and 10' for the extruded
4) Click "OK"
5) You will see the text that you created on the screen following your mouse. It is waiting until you click once on the screen to find it a home. Just click once on the bottom of the P in playhomes.
6) Click the "Select arrow" in the upper left of the toolbar.
7) Click once on my Honey Bear Playhomes text and then click "Edit" then select "Delete".
8) To colorize your text simply click the "Select arrow" again and click once on your text to highlight it in blue.
9) Click the "Bucket fill" icon in the toolbar and select your text color then click once on your text to change the color.
10 To make the text sides a different color like mine in red and yellow simply click the "Select arrow" and then double click on your text then select the "Bucket fill" with another color selected then click on the areas of the text that you want to have changed to a different color.
11) Once you have your text the color that you want click the blue "Orbit" tool next to the white hand in the toolbar to orbit around the text.
12) Once you have the angle that you like and want to save as an image click "File" then "Import" then "2D Graphic" then name and save your JPG.
13) Open your JPG in GIMP http://www.gimp.org/
14) If you see a side window open that says "Layers, channels, paths etc." close it.
15) Click "Windows" then "Recently closed" then "Layers, channels, paths etc."
16) Right click on your image in the layer box and then click "Add alpha channel"
17) Click "Select" then "By color" then click once on the white background.
18) Click "Edit" then "Clear"

The white background should now be transparent. If you still see some whitish background follow steps 17-18 again until the entire background is transparent.

19) To save the image as a transparent PNG click "File" then "Save as" then in the popup box select PNG in the "Select file type" scroll menu then click "Save"

Your new 3D text/logo should now be a transparent PNG that you can overlay on top of an image to create a really cool custom banner.

Damn... and I said that I didn't have the time to do a tutorial. You people are soo lucky I was trying to tire myself out before bed... ;)

To remove the lines around the text simply

Could someone from Yola please change the step 12 above to read export not import:

12) Once you have the angle that you like and want to save as an image click "File" then "Export" then "2D Graphic" then name and save your JPG.

Thanks. ;)

Please post your results here to share with everyone else... ;)

Forgot to mention that you can make the logo in any font that is currently on your computer.

I think that this might be great for those who want a logo in their native language but can't ever find the online logo generator that would make one. I would be interested to see a logo from another country.
