Hello stonesings,

Websites hosted by Yola cannot be secured using SSL certificates as we are virtual hosting. Therefore, we do not assign a unique IP address to each website. If you wish to secure your websites with SSL certificates you will need to move to an ISP who can provide you with a unique IP address for each of your websites. The other option is to use a third party payment gateway (like PayPal or Google Checkout) as you will use their security to transact online.

Hi Sanja,

Thanks for your prompt reply! I was going to use Paypal anyway, but wanted the SSL symbol to provide reassurance to customers. I'm just learning about e-commerce. Do you mean that the SSL certificate is mainly for sellers who ask for an alternate method of payment, e.g. cheque or phone orders?

Hi stonesings

Sanja is currently offline, but I hope I'm able to offer some more help with this question.

The SSL certificate can be used by any merchant. However, it is not necessary for small businesses if you plan on using PayPal for your Ecommerce transactions. You may find this online forum thread really helpful: Is an SSL certificate necessary....

Thanks, Nazlie. I'll use the suggested "middle ground" and post the Paypal logo on my site.
