Hi jonjon,

As you might imagine, we have the file size limit so that storage management does not get out of hand. There are several things you can do to use large files without going over the limit.

For instance, if you have a large video, it can be uploaded to YouTube and then placed in your site using the YouTube widget.

For very large files that you really want to use, you can upload them to any one of many free storage sites available on the net and then link to them from your site. These types of sites can be found using major search engines.

For images, you can resize them, since super high resolution images are usually not necessary when displaying on computer screens.

If a larger limit becomes a hot point for many of our users, we could discuss possible increases with our platform team. Given our current set-up, I doubt we could go as high as 50MB in the near-term.

Hope some of the suggestions above give you good options.

Sean

hmm...could we go 10 or 15 (perhaps by special request?) in order to keep visitors in the sythasite system as opposed to having files hosted somewhere else?

I've put in a request to our platform team to look at the impact of 10MB or 15MB. They're fully committed to current work at the moment, but they can look at it later an see if we could increase the limit.

jonjon, what about using a free file hosting service such as http://www.box.net ? The maximum file size is 10mb but if you subscribe you can upload files which are up to 1GB.
you could also try http://www.mediafire.com/ which has a maximum upload size of 100mb on the free plan.
Hope this helps.

I think that this post should be now buried. The premise of 5 megs is wrong :)
