Customizing menu? I need 2 different ones.

I began to create Hungarian pages from my existing English ones, because I want my site to be available on both languages. I faced with another problem while creating the Hungarian content, the menu issue. I want to have a different type of menu on Hungarian pages, than having on the English ones. Not only the menu titles should be different in text, but they should lead to the Hungarian replica-sites as well. Plus I want to add a button (I think a small flag of the 2 countries would be fine) which would link back to the "other" homepage. Is it possible to do somehow? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Valika.

Could you have a look at http://sribuaban.synthasite.com

This is my two language site with an opening index where you set the follow on language.

Let me know if it's what you want.

Three aspects; main Index

Then either Thai index:

or English Index:

I have duplicated each page in the other language. The menus are identical but in either Thai or English.

You can get from an English page to its equivalent Thai page and vice-versa.

The only way of getting back to the first index is through the site map.

and the sitemap:

Yes Peter, this is exactly, what I want to create myself! I like your page and it's functioning just like the way I also need. Would you give me some instructions, how to do this? Thank you in advance! I also like the flags moving. Where did you find them?

Hello valika. Glad you like the work.

Firstly the animated flags????? I'll look and see where I found them :(

What you have to do is move all your pages out of the index. For this you can't use the automatic menu.

Create ALL of your pages first, both Hungarian and English. Keep a good record of the page file names. This is really important other wise your head will drop off and fall into the rubbish bin :)

When you have done this you then must create two more pages: Your Hungarian Index and your English index pages.

Take the English index and the same will apply to the Hungarian index page:

Create a menu and link each of the English pages to its menu title.

On your English pages insert a link to go back to the English Index page.

I think this a good starting point and I'm happy to explain further as you go. Please don't hesitate to ask me anything. In the meantime I will try to find the animated flags and I will post that here.OK?

The physical window dressing of buttons can come after doing all this and that is what I recommend. Do the ground work first and the window work last.

1. you can not change the bulit in menu (page tabs) text. If you want a differnet 'built in' menu you will need to make a different site.

2. to add a flag which links to the other home page;
pull in a image box and add a picture of a flag, go to the sidebar content menu and in the image properties click 'choose link' and add the page of your other home page.

3. What i would do with the menus is this -

Only have 2 pages showing in the built in menu (the 2 home pages)

click edit menu and only have the 2 home pages 'in menu' drag all the other to 'out of menu'

and then on the 2 pages have links to all the other pages you have.

you can make text into a link by highlighting the text and clicking this button, then choose a page or URL to link to.

Thanks a lot, it will take time to do this, but now know how I can start it. I'll return here anyway as I make all the stuff you mentioned. Probably tomorrow.
Just a question relating you wrote above. Would you explain me, how to create a menu? I'm not an expert, sorry.

Lee has just added a very clever method for your consideration.

The way I do this is simply to make a list of appropriate menu names. Then link the correct page to the menu item..

You can make a link to text by clicking the little chain icon and this opens up a dialogue window from which you can select a page or a site or a file. In this case you would select a page that is already created. The link is then made for you so that when you click the item in your new made menu, it will open that page

Many thanks to both of you! I'll try to follow the instruction and I'll return later and tell you how I could manage this. Anyway, it doesn't seem too complicated, just need some time to to do this. See you!

Hi valika,

"Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and all related characters and images are the property of SCI-FI Channel & MGM Television Entertainment.
All copyrights on songs, images and footage presented here remain property of their respective owners. (valika there's no argument on this whatsoever!) No infringement of rights is meant or implied. (not relevant. is it violation of copyright or not. that's the question!)
I truly believe I don't harm anyone using them. It is intended as a fair use of the copyrighted material." (This is not your decison at all. this is purely at the wish of the copyright owner. they do not have to publicise their copyright or anything. The material is there's)

I'm worried by this notice. I don't understand what you are saying. You may very well be in infringement of copyright and your site will be closed down if this is the case.

It really has very little to do with your intention. This is law. You simply can't presume anything. The copyright owner has full control over their own property. Full stop. If you have a license to use this then that's different. i see no evidence of this so I can't say.

If you aren't sure then you must contact the owner of the copyright or their assigned agent and ask their permission to use the material before you use it. This is very serious and is taken so by Yola and this community.

Valika,

here is a well written commentary on Copyright. It's a great start to understanding the current status of the power of copyright.

Thanks Peter. That is a useful link. It is always best to err on the safe side in these matters. If you are at all unsure, do your research or seek advice or, better yet, permission to use any content that may fall under copyright law.

I didn't mention and i apologise that wasn't my find but I think Emmy originally introduced it. It is a good commentary and easy to read.

Hi Valika

As a fellow Stargate fan, nut and all around junkie who has seen every one there has been multiple times I can happily say that you have a great site there and should be proud of yourself.

I quite like how you were able to pull off the multiple languages. You have tied it all in quite nicely.

Nice choice of the Flashvortex menu. Your choice in menu color fits in perfectly with your font color as well. Were the instructions easy enough for you?

I will have to return to your site a few more times later when I have more time to listen to some of the music...

Keep up the good work and happy site building
Ed

Oh, I knew I would stir up a little storm with this copyright thing! Peter, you are right, but not quite. First of all, thank you for your comment and the link of the commentary about copyright, it is really useful. I'm not a lawyer myself (plus not a native English speaker), but I investigated a little around this subject before. What I stated on my site, that this is a fair use of the copyright, is a legal term, because there could be exceptions to copyright law. If you are interested in this, you can find information related this field here at the below links (and there are many other sources as well, of course):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limitations_and_exceptions_to_copyright
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation
http://www.eff.org/cases/2009-dmca-rulemaking
Anyway, at this time fanvideos, such as mines, are permitted to stay on several streaming sites, like Youtube or imeem, because the copyright owners don't embarrass them. Hopefully this situation will change in the near future as a result of the activity of the EFF and this kind of use of the copyrighted material will be covered by the law soon.

Thanks again for your former help, Peter and Lee!

Ed, your instructions were a great help to make the Flashvortex menu, thanks! And I'm glad, that you like my site, it means a lot. Additionally it's an honour for me, if you will watch any of my fanvideos in the future.

This is a fantastic and supportive community here, keep up the great work! And Yola rocks!
