When I go to purchase a domain name (at godaddy.com) they recommend that I purchase like 6 variations of my original name...for example the name I want is www.myname.com and they say I should also buy www.myname.org, .net, .info...etc.
Is this really neccessary, or is it just a sales pitch?
This is a very person decision. Often businesses like to buy their domain name with different extensions to stake their claim on the name and increase the scope of their online presence.
If you bought myname.com and someone else went and bought myname.net - would this bother you or present a problem for your business? If so you might want to buy the domain with the other extension. If not, you can stick with just the one domain name and it will be perfectly adequate.
