If i change my page names will my links be updated or do i have to do that maually

Sounds like a pretty stupid question and I'm guessing the answer is that I have to update my links manually, but I'll wait for an answer cos I'm looking at changing about 70 pages plus add to cart buttons!

Hello Kenny,

If you have created text links on your pages going to other pages of the site that you are now renaming, you will have to update the link.

Such as, if your page was called mypage1 so had the url of http://mysite.com/mypage1.php and you now change the page name to mypage2 the url of that page becomes http://mysite.com/mypage2.php so when someone clicks on a text link you created going to mypage1 (which is now mypage2), there will be a 404 Error returned because that page url no longer exists.

This also applies to links that are pointing towards your site. If there are other websites linking to pages of yours that you will be renaming, you will want to try to get the link changed.

Kind Regards,

Emmy

I was kinda hoping there would be a bach file to take care of that sort of stuff, I only want to rename to make the pages more google friendly! Looks like around 5 to 6 hundred links including add to cart buttons that I have to change....I better get started! LOL

Hi Kenny

Do you have Firefox? If you do..there's this add-on called FoxReplace. I think it works like in Word where you find the "text" and then replace with the text you want. I've never used this add-on.. but it may be worth checking into. Here's the download site: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...

Hi Kenny,
Wow, sounds like a lot of links to change. I am wondering about your Add to Cart buttons, are you speaking of the Buy Now button in the PayPal widget or did you create your own Add To Cart buttons of some sort that are going to pages in your site?

If you are speaking of the Buy Now button that is in the PayPal widget, this will function the same even if you change the name of the page it is on as once the user clicks on it they are taken into the PayPal environment; but maybe that is not what you are speaking of.

Hi Emmy

Unfortunately my add to cart buttons will have to be updated manually as I used a free cart program from mal's e-commerce which has much better functionality than the paypal cart. Anyone wanting to have a look at the Mal's E-commeece software can find it at www.mals-e.com

Im going to try to find out how the add on for firefox works that littleme posted later today, I'm not much of a teccy so might end up doing the changes manually, but I recently had my first sale on www.chilliz.co.uk (which is the smaller of my two sites) so that is kind of driving me on to get the work done.

The bigger site that will take a while is www.veggiz.co.uk The site isn't quite finished yet but I recently published it so please feel free to be my first visitor and have a look around.

Hi again guys

hope someone is still reading! Luckily I have not had time during the last couple of days to start changing my page names ...... and now I don't think that I need to!

I've been reading a lot about SEO and in particular page titles, it has now occured to me after reading "Adding title, description and keywords tags" which can be found here:

http://cs.synthasite.com/index.php?pg...

that I may well have been going down the wrong road in thinking about changing the actual page names. It was my understanding that changing the page names to something more relevent would help with search engine rankings. However, if I have finally got my brain in gear and my understanding of what I have just read is correct, then I think its the "window title" that I should be changing. Is this correct? If it is then I think I have saved myself a whole lot of work and possible frustraion.

Although I built what I think is a pretty cool site www.chilliz.co.uk I never considered anything much in the properties tab other than using it to change margins (doh!) Hope this can serve as a warning to those, like me, that were only concentrating on what their site looked like

In summary, is it the window titles that I should be concentrating on changing rather than the actual way that I name my pages?

Hello Kenny,

I'm glad you found that information. Although it is said that having relevant/descriptive page names can be helpful in the area of search engine optimization, it is just a piece of the puzzle.

Yes, adding title, description and keywords tags is a great thing to do for the pages of your site. This will help to alert the search engines to the topic of your pages.

When you choose a specific term to target on a page and utilize it in your tags (such as the example page you found, see that 'fine gold jewelry' is utilized in all three tags) you can also utilize that term in the content of your page such as in the Page Heading and a few times in the page content itself, but don't overdo it.

Please take a look at our other Knowledge Book topics surrounding this topic: Promotion, SEO & Analyzing Traffic.

Hope this helps,

Emmy

Hi Emmy

I'm pretty glad I found it too! As i said earlier I was gooing to change all my page addys mistakenly thinking that that was what I had been reading about, it would have been a huge headache to change all the links afterwards. Anyway seems I'm back on track again now and looking forward to seeing my sites climb the search engine rankings (albeit pretty slowly I expect)

Thanks for the link you have left, I'll dive in for a good old read as soon as I have some spare time.

Oh someone actually found my chilliz site and made a purchase although I have no idea where they found it, (maybe another Yola user) but it has certainly encouraged me to carry on and try and make my site search engine friendly!

Thanks for all your help,

Kenny
