Have you mistakenly misspelled a URL somewhere in your 100+ page site and can't find it yourself? Do you have any dead links that cause your visitors to see the "Page not found" screen? Have you got affiliate ads on your site that go nowhere?

With Xenu's Link Sleuth link verification is performed on links which appear in <a> tags, as well as images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and Java applets. The program follows links to other pages, and checks the links on those pages also, so it is possible to check an entire site for broken links in one session. Xenu displays a continuously updated list of URLs which can be sorted according to different criteria. The program utilizes a "simple, no-frills user-interface", and can help users understand how certain Web sites are structured. When Link Sleuth attempts to follow links to Wikipedia it displays Wikipedia's "403 Forbidden" response to Xenu's ID of itself "User-Agent: Xenu Link Sleuth 1.2j". It's possible Wikipedia blocks Xenu because of loading issues. Usually the Wikipedia links are perfectly fine but it may take some link checking on your own to verify.

While dead links are a pain if you can't spend all day clicking each and every link on your site just to make sure that they all go somewhere. (I used to) You don't need to...

There are other link checkers out there but not always will they tell you the page the error is on without spending some green. The Honey Bear likes the word "FREE" so here is a simple FREE and easy download to find those pesky varmints.

It is as easy as

Clicking here to go to Xenu's description page

Click here to download Link Slueth

1) Install on your PC
2) Run program
3) Click "File" in Xenu toolbar
4) Click "Check URL"
5) Enter the URL for the index page of the site that you wish to check. (it is best to open your site and copy the full URL directly from the address bar)
6) Click the "OK" button and you should see the Link Sleuth search your site and hopefully you see a bunch of green "OK"'s on the status column.
7) If you see red it's easy to find the page the error is on by simply right clicking the red link in the search results and then click "Properties"
8) In the Properties pop-up box on the very bottom you will see the page(s) on your site that have the errors so you can open your site builder to that page, exit or delete and then repeat the above instructions to recheck your site once more.

Just think about how often you add or delete pages on your site and then consider that others are linking to your site and to those missing pages too... Web pages come and go which can affect the usability of your site to your visitors and web crawlers. Xenu is so easy that you can use this as your weekly site checker and ensure that all your links go to where you want them to.

Ho, Ho, Happy site building
