Last night I checked my home safety website's standings in Google--oh joy it was on page one for Three different keywords. That was probably around midnight central time. Now I just checked it and it's on page 6 for two of the keywords and page 8 for one keyword. What happened in about 20 hours?!! Does this sort of thing happen regularly? Am I going to only get on the first page at midnight? I was actually thinking of trying to sell the website! Crazy stuff!

Hello Diane

The problem with ranking in the search engines and trying to stay in the same place is that the search engines change their algorithms and how they rank sites and pages all the time. One day you might be in position 1, the next day in position 8.

This is a struggle all webmasters have. I am not sure what keywords you were using to search with; but this will also make a difference as well. One thing to consider is all of the sites vying for the same keywords, and the search engine needs to constantly decide which site to put in which position in their results.

The best thing to do is to continue to add fresh content to your site, optimize the content with keywords and meta tags, and also work on gathering more backlinks as this is a very important part of how the search engine ranks pages.

I know you already know all this :) I'm going to add the SEO information below for those who are coming across this for the first time.

We have a series of SEO Tutorials which will step you through various ways to optimize your site for the search engines; here is a link: SEO Tutorials.

Another great thing to do is add a blog to your site, this will give you an easy way to continually add new, fresh content to your site which is very good for search engine optimization. Here is a link: Blogging With Yola.

A great way to promote your site and any updates you make is through Twitter. If you have a Twitter account, you can easily Tweet any changes or updates you make when you publish! For more information on this please see this thread in our forum: Twitter Button - Tweet your new site or your latest changes!.

If you don't have a Twitter account and would like to get one to make use of this promotion tool, please go to and sign up for a Free account!

You can also watch a Yola Webinar, Introduction to SEO, if you are interested. Here is a link:

It can be frustrating I know, but this is something that all webmasters deal with and the thing to do is just keep working at it. I hope this information is helpful.

Yea, they change the algorithm all the time, sometimes even by random. The algorithm will change from one second to the next. And I hope google doesn't have a mind, it might take over the world.

If it works don't fix it.

Must be broke and undergoing repairs as we speak.
