I have twice successfully changed the domain servers from YOLA to our new site on Wordpress.com. Each time it works for a while, then surprisingly, switches back to YOLA.

What am I missing?

Hello Elyse,

When I check your domain, I see a Wordpress site.  If you haven't already, I would suggest that you clear your cache:

http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser%27s-Cache

It could be that your DNS settings have not had a chance to propagate across the internet yet. This varies from registrar to registrar but in some cases it can take up to 48 hours.

DNS settings take time to update because DNS information is cached, or "remembered," by a resolver. This speeds up your Internet experience when visiting a site you go to often since less time is needed to complete DNS lookups. This also helps lower the load on DNS servers around the world.

If a DNS record changes, a new lookup is not done until that cache expires, so a resolver will find out about the changed record only when its cache has expired.

When you are waiting for DNS to propagate, you are waiting for cached DNS records to expire at all of the different resolvers that previously looked it up.

I hope that helps!

Thank you for your response.

Previously I hadn't unpublished the Yola site first.

When the new record propagated we would see the wordpress site for a time, and then it would slip back to YOLA.

It did that twice.

Today, I went ahead and unpublished the YOLA site, then re pointed the domain to Wordpress, and a few hours later it seems to be working.

So is UNPUBLISHING the YOLA site the critical first step before pointing the domain to another host?

Thanks.

I checked your DNS again and it looks exactly the same as it did earlier when I looked at it.  You don't need to unpublish your Yola site when you change your name servers.

Since your DNS is now managed by your new provider, you might want to check with them to make sure that all of your DNS records (A, CNAME, etc.) are set to use their information and not ours.

Please feel free to contact us again if you need any further assistance with your Yola account.
