Domain Name and Links Problem. Help!

I've created a Synthasite website but I already have a domain name c/o GoDaddy. How do I configure it in such a way that my site will replace the "mysite.synthasite.com" with simply "mysite.com" and also the links that follow? I've successfully assigned it but everytime I click on another link (e.g. mysite.com/about.php), the URL at the address bar is forever at "mysite.com". What do I do? Help!

Hi Reev,

Here are some instructions that might help you with GoDaddy:

You need to set up your A Record to point to SynthaSite. Here's how:

1. Go to the GoDaddy website.
2. Under 'Domains' on the menu choose 'My Domains'. This will take you to your GoDaddy domain manager. NOTE: at this stage you may be required to login.
3. From the 'Domain Manager' interface, click on the domain you want to edit.
4. Now click: Click on 'Total DNS Control and MX Records'.
5. Now you need to edit your A record. Click on the icon in the section: A("host").
6. In the box where it says 'Points To Ip Address': put the SynthaSite IP: 208.75.208.172 and click 'OK'.
7. Your domain should now point to SynthaSite. You can test if this has worked by typing your domain into your browser. If all has worked correctly you should end up on a placeholder page displaying your site name. Don't be too worried if this is not the case, bear in mind that DNS changes, like you have just made, can take up to 48 hours to propagate through the internet.

If after 48 hours your domain is still not working as you would like, see the section in the tutorial below on domain diagnosis and troubleshooting.

Don't Worry! Your site will automatically move to your new URL eventually. I did the same thing with my site. It took several days for http://simplyeighties.com to take over eighties.synthasite.com

Hi! Thanks for the posts. I waited an entire week so I could verify my findings.

Before in GoDaddy, I only clicked "Enable Forwarding" and after about 2 days, my own dot.com worked with Synthasite. However, the URL remained static (meaning myownwebsite.com) was forever on the address bar and never changed regardless of whatever link I clicked.

Now after I had pointed the IP: 208.75.208.172 in the Total DNS Control and MX Records menu, I waited for about 4 days but now my site would lead to a blank "Place Holder Page" with just "myownwebsite.com" text against an all white background.

Should I wait longer? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Reev,

If you're getting a blank Placeholder page, it usually means you have done everything right on your DNS settings but have not published your site from SynthaSite to your own domain name.

To fix this go to "Publish My Site", click on the third option "Already own a Domain?" and add your own domain and then click "Next" and you will be taken through all the steps to publish your site.

If your site is already published to another domain name you can edit by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the yellow "Update My Site" button.

Then click on "Publishing Settings" In the dialog box that opens up you will see an option to "Manage your Domains". Use this to add in your new domain name.

If this doesn't work for you, please could you post your URL so that we can check it out.

Finally an answer that works! The part about going to "Publish Settings" is the key. I wonder why this useful bit of information has been omitted. A lot of people seem to be asking this question over and over.

Thanks so much Marije! My URL is now working with Synthasite. Woohoo.
