Domain Names and Synthasite

I already have a registered domain with www.cheap-domainregistration.com.
I now want to build a website for it using Synthasite.
What is the procedure for keeping my existing domain name?
And will my domain name be the one that appears in the url bar, or will it be hanging off a synthasite url?
Thanks,
Paul Caspall

Hi Paul,

You can definitely use your own domain with SynthaSite. You can also keep your subdomain if you wish. There are a few steps to follow and I've added them below.

We have a tutorial outlining the steps to configuring your domain, giving two popular domain name registrars as examples: http://www.synthasite.com/tutorials/p.... There are also instructions on how to use ZoneEdit if your domain name registrar does not provide you with domain name management. However, most domain name registrars can assist you with an A record, in which case you would not need to use a third party service like ZoneEdit.

These are general instructions on how to configure your domain to point to SynthaSite. If you require specific help with the interface of your domain name registrar, please contact them for support.

How to configure a domain name you already own:
1. Log in to your chosen domain registrar (eg. GoDaddy.com, Register.com)
2. Go to the DNS Management page
3. Set up an A Record
4. The IP address of your record must point to: "208.75.208.172"

Please note that it can take up to 48 hours (although usually less) for these changes to take effect and you need to contact your domain registrar if you need help in that regard. Feel free to forward any instructions you receive from them to us so that we can advise you further.

Once you have configured your DNS settings, click the yellow "Publish My Site" button in SynthaSite. Click on the blue link at the bottom of the dialog box that says "Already Own a Domain?" Fill in your domain name and follow the prompts to publish your site. If you have any difficulty with this please let us know.

Once your site is published to your domain the hard part is over and you will be able to edit your site and then update it with a single click!

Hi Imran,

You can use a company like ZoneEdit for your DNS servers. We have a detailed tutorial that includes instructions on using ZoneEdit: http://www.synthasite.com/tutorials/p....

The steps are outlined below.

ZoneEdit is not a domain registrar. You will not be able to buy a domain through ZoneEdit. Rather, you need them when you have registered a domain, but not been provided with suitable DNS management services enabling you to point your A record at SynthaSite.

Important: You will need to request from your current domain registrar (the people who you bought your domain through) that they change your nameservers to the ZoneEdit nameservers.

These are the basic steps:

1. Sign up with ZoneEdit on www.zoneedit.com
2. From the homepage click on "Sign up".
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and fill out the form. You can select the free trial option under "Select Service Option".
4. After you have successfully signed up you should receive an email with your access details. Use these to login.
5. Once logged in, click "Add Zones".
6. Enter your domain and click "Add Zone".
7. If your nameservers are not correctly set up, ZoneEdit will be request that you update them. You will need to get your current domain registrar to correctly set your nameservers to those provided by ZoneEdit - ns3.zoneedit.com and ns17.zoneedit.com in this case (see screenshot below).

Note: There can be a delay of up to 48 hours between your nameservers being changed, and ZoneEdit picking up the change.

1. Once your nameservers are correctly configured to point to ZoneEdit you should get a screen like the one below, which will let you manage your "Zone". To configure your domain to point to SynthaSite, click on "IP Addresses".
2. This takes you to an interface which lets you determine where your domain points. Leave the "name" field blank, enter 208.75.208.172 as your "Numeric IP" and click "Add new IP address".
3. ZoneEdit will now ask for confirmation. Make sure you have correctly entered in the IP: 208.75.208.172. We want to point both yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.comyoudomain.com or www.yourdomain.com, both will end up at your website. Click on the top "Yes" button to select this option.
4. Your domain now points to SynthaSite. You can test if this has worked by typing your domain into your browser. If all has worked correctly you should end up on a placeholder page displaying your site name. Bear in mind that these DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate through the internet.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if you need more information, or help with anything else.

Ruth,
You are awesome life saver. Thanks sooooo much for such a detailed email.
ok, I did what you said. NOW i have two questions:
Q1) you mentioned that i should name the servers at my domain register's site as "ns3.zoneedit.com and ns17.zoneedit.com" but when i went to zone edit site it gave me "ns2.zoneedit.com and ns3.zoneedit.com".
So should i go with ns2 and ns3 or use your's ns3 andns17 ?

Q2) I understand it takes 48 hrs, but after that, i also understand to configure my domain to point it to SynthaSite IP. But HOW will i be able to set email with new domain. I mean if i want to set email as info@touchdownbooster.com.hk or imran@touchdownbooster.com.hk etc, so where will i do and how many emails can i make.
Thanks so much again.

Best wishes,
Imran

P.S. for next time should i write in the comment box under your answer or write at the bottom of the page Reply. (but that reply is to Paul not to you, isn't it) !!

I was able to easily point my personal domain name to my Synthasite site following the instructions listed on this thread. However, I would like to point two domain names (e.g. mydomain.com and mydomain.net) to my Synthasite site. Currently, I can only specify one domain name in my accounts setting. Is there a workaround for this? (I realize that I could forward one of my domain names to the other in my DNS account). Thanks.

You will need to do the domain forwarding as your site cannot be published to two domain names. This is the best option because it would be a case of duplicate content if you published your site to two domains.

Kind Regards,
Emmy
