Hello I have build a site with BT Community website builder.

And i have a DomainName registered with Yola. I would like to point my BT community website to Yola DomainName

I would told by BT that i could add a CName eg www. followed by the address of website im trying to point. mydomain.btck.co.uk

I followed the instructions and added Cname, but the site is not pointing away. Also i don't understand what the "A record" does

I thought this could be getting in the way. So i changed the numbers to something random. This hasnt helped. (000.00.000.000)

Can I use my own custom domain name?

If you are using your own domain (e.g. www.yourname.com) this has to be added to the [External Domain Name] field either during Step 3 of the registration process, Step 2 of [Add a new Website] if it’s a second website you are adding or in the [Your Community Website] section.

To use your own domain on an existing website you can go into the [Settings] tab in [Edit Site Properties] and add this to the [External Domain Name] field.

To configure your own domain to direct visitors to your btck.co.uk website you must also create an ‘Alias (CNAME)’ record for ‘www’ and add the full URL, minus the http:// of the BT Community Web Kit site, to the ‘target address’.

This can be done by contacting your domain registrar, this will be the company you purchased your custom domain from. You may need to call your Registrar’s support line and ask them to set-up a CNAME re-direct to your btck,co,uk website. Alternatively your domain registrar may provide a control panel with the domain that allows you so set this up for yourself, usually under the settings for ‘DNS’

It can take up to 24 hours for changes to be replicated to other DNS servers on the internet so it may not work straight away.

We can only support an ‘Alias (CNAME)’ re-direct as we cannot give out our IP address.

Hello Sukh,

If you are wanting to point your Yola domain to your external site you are going to have to change the DNS of your site to what they are wanting.

I would suggest you first re-add your A records you deleted. Then add the DNS wanted by BT.

We have a tutorial on how to do it here: Yola DNS

Does your site have an address? They ask in their support documentation that you add a CNAME to your Yola domain's DNS to point to your site domain.

You can do this using the above instructions. And the instructions from BT:

To configure your own domain to direct visitors to your btck.co.uk website you must also create an ‘Alias (CNAME)’ record for ‘www’ and add the full URL, minus the http:// of the BT Community Web Kit site, to the ‘target address’.

So you would add a CNAME of www.yourBTsite.co.uk and your domain will redirect there.

I hope this helps.
