Google Webmaster Tools is saying I have duplicate title tags and meta descriptions in my Blog, and I believe is penalizing my seo rankings. What should I do?

Hi Glynis,

That is a great question. Whatever title you give your blog post will become the title tag in the code, so each of your blog posts will have a unique title tag. But, the description and keywords tag will not be unique as they will be whatever description and keywords tag you give the main blog page. I understand that this is not ideal for SEO and I am going to add this to our list of Feature Requests; hopefully being able to create unique meta tags for each blog post will be released in the future.

Until then, really try to make the title of your blog posts good SEO wise, include your keywords in the content of the post itself, and do some internal linking between your posts and work on building traffic and backlinks to your site.

Hope this helps!

I have wondered about this myself and would like to see this improved upon also....Maybe under tags in new post there could be at least a place for window title(these do show as duplicates on Google also) and meta description....I think our blog keywords should keep us covered there.I do see the name of the URL is created from the name of the post so we are covered on key words there.Looks like Yola has taken care of part of this already.

I do want to share that SEO for our blogs does work very well....My blog page now comes up as being 17% of my total search queries for my entire site.

is the window title not the title of the blog post?

That sounds like what Emmy is saying but I show them all as duplicates on my webmaster account.

Hi all,

There is definitely a unique title tag for each post as it shows in the code; I am not sure why GWT is showing it as duplicate. Here is a screen shot of the source code of a blog post that shows the title of the post as the title tag. I will look into this a bit further and see what I can find out; but as far as I can tell right now, the title tag is unique:

I just checked my google webmaster site and under "html suggestions" it says i have duplicate title tags.

Some on the list they provide no longer exist. They were page titles for pages that I have since deleted or changed.

How can I fix it so they no longer appear as duplicates?

Hi Susan. I had a look at the source code on a few of your pages and don't see duplicate title tags. Do you have a blog page on your site? (sorry if I overlooked it). If they are for page titles that have been deleted or changed, this could be because of caching on their end and the problem should resolve itself over time. It would be quite helpful if you could post the exact message from Google Webmaster or email it to support@yola.com so that we can take a closer look.

Hi Guys,
Yes this seems to be an issue with our site as well. When I check in Google Webmaster Tools it claims I have duplicate descriptions and am not really sure how or if I can fix them in the current blog format provided by Yola. This could also be because we have changed the entire structure of our page to a blog format. I'm just wondering if in the future the Yola format will change in a way allowing us to have more freedom with our SEO?

Hi David,
Unfortunately there is not a way to give each individual blog post a unique meta description tag at this time. The title of each individual blog post will become the meta title tag, but whatever the description on the main blog page is will become the default meta description tag of each blog post.

This will only be the case for blog posts, not for individual pages. You can apply unique title and description tags to each of your site's pages, but unfortunately at this time we do have a workaround for giving each individual blog post a unique description tag.

If you are concerned with optimizing your blog posts for search, many of the same SEO principles that apply to a webpage also apply to a blog post. Please take a look at this tutorial where you will find lots of information on optimizing website content: Building Your Site With SEO in Mind.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Your page title should not be the same unless you are giving each blog post the same title...Where we are STILL getting duplication is in the meta tag description. This has been going on so long I do not think it will be addressed. There has been almost nothing done to improve our blogs in the three plus years I have been here. Many of us have several years invested in our blogs and are NOT interested in tumblr . . .Can you share your URL so we can see what is coming up for page titles on your posts?
