Forum Links suggestion

I would really like to see links in the forum open in a new window. I'm using firefox and know I can hit Ctrl while clicking the link to open it in a new tab, but that's another step.

I'm curious if there's a reason links don't automatically open in a new window.

Hello Margie

Are you referring to the Yola forum or a forum on your own site?

Please note: current thinking in web usability circles is that links that open in a new window are a bad idea for a number of reasons. See: Beware of Opening Links in a New Window, for a great article by a leading expert in the field.

If you're still wanting to make a forum you have on your own site open up in a new window, then here's how to do it:

1. Add text using the Text Widget.
2. Select the text that you want the link and then click "insert link" on the text editing toolbar.
3. Create your link to your chosen URL as normal, click "OK".
4. Then click "HTML" - the last icon on the text editing toolbar.
5. You will see the code that looks like this for your link (I have used the text "Visit Wikipedia to see more information", with the link being on Wikipedia:
Visit <a href="http://www.wikipedia.org&quot;&gt;Wik...; to see more information

All you need to do is add in target="blank" as show below:
Visit <a href="http://www.wikipedia.org&quot; target="blank">Wikipedia</a> to see more information.

Your link will then open in a new tab or window, depending on what browser your visitor is using.

I'm late coming back to this topic, but wanted to respond to part of your post. I was/am referring to the Yola GetSatisfaction forum.

The sitepoint article you posted is from 2004. While some of their reasoning is still valid, it depends on the type of link. I would prefer that links going outside my site, open in a new window or tab so the visitor still has my site open in the original widow/tab.

As a matter of fact, to me one of the biggest annoyances on the Yola forum is user posted links taking me away from the forum topic. Yes, I can hit Ctrl while clicking, but often forget. I am learning though. :)

I Agree with Margie, I always right click and open link in new tab.

you can sometimes get lost after clicking a link, by opening in a new tab it's easy to go back to where you found the link..

I also agree with Margie, and wanted to say this before. Really is annoying, when you select and then taken to the new link in the same page you are in for the Yola site. I forget the Ctrl Click or right click button sometimes (mostly often!).
Sanja personally also feel nowadays it's better (when we have visitors in our own sites) for people to get taken to a new window when linking, and then they have ours open still, otherwise we lose them entirely from our site.
