fresh content

I keep reading about "fresh content" being a real important thing for SEO. Is this talkig about your main index page? Or just bulking out your website?

If it is about your main page, how much would you say you should change and how often?
Could I say make up about 4 text boxes with information about my business that is kind of the same and have them on rotation, say move them around once or twice a week. Would that keep it fresh?

Of cource , not.

In seo , it is very important to have fresh content, but not at all.
For an example, fb uses their home page for thousands days.

Google and others measures site update frequency in daily, weekly and monthly basis.
Check your url's freq. By typing
www.Your Site.com/sitemap.Xml

for this , rotating is a bad idea. There are some sites on the net that archives web sites, such as Wayback machine.
If some engine detected that you are just rotating content, it means you gets outranked from them.

To update the site automaticaly , just put some twitter widget , flickr or a rss extract widget or news widget.
When google crawls your site , google always detects a new update of your site.

Remember not to add google widgets, widgetbox widgets. They aren't help this. Just search the net for twitter widget html code , or something.

Visit examples here.
Here is an auto updating news widget of my site news.

OK, Ive got a twitter widget already. How many times a day/week would you have to tweet to be seen as keeping it fresh?

I link my blog up top my twitter, so my front page keeps up with what I'm doing. I just dont think Im doing it enough.

Instead of playing games with Twitter and widgets, your best bet is to provide the quality information that the search engines really look for. They recognize all the different ploys and games that so many websites owners use to try and get high ranking in the search results. But anyone who has been watching Google and the recent Panda release knows that Google is continually tweaking it's algorithms to detect those sites that don't provide the quality needed by website visitors.

And Google also stresses how important Social is to SEO . . . It is NOT considered game playing using twitter and all the other social sites. Of course content is king but the point is that you need to be doing ALL THE ABOVE

True. However, I was responding to the idea that tweeting will "keep it fresh" as opposed to content. Yes, use all the tools you can, but don't expect several 140 character tweets to take the place of content. After all, it's a waste of time to invite people to your house (website) with a Tweet, if when they get there you don't serve them anything (provide content). That makes you a bad host.
