Hello Lili,

You may like to see Creating an Online Store tutorial.

PayPal and other gateways do have commissions on transactions.

You can select other currencies by going directly to PayPal and following their directions for other currencies.

Thanks for your answer- I will have a look...any suggestion of LAYOUT for more than 200 items? (columns, text box, picture)

And if I do use paypal- as a shopping cart on free yola because it is probably the only possible way how to create it,
but my customer will refuse to pay by that-
can they somehow then chose option to pay directly to my bank account-
can this be done somehow?

I can display my bank account directly on site...but if they click on paypal...will they charge me anyway?
And how will I know, what they ordered...?
is there a way to simplify all this?

If I had just one item...I can insert it as a picture and text box under...and bank details...no problem...
But what can I best do with so many?

Hope somebody already solved this problem- thanks for any suggestions

It would be very very foolish to expose your bank account in that way

Hello,

It is not advisable to put any personal information, such as banking details on your website. If you use the eCommerce Widgets provided in the sitebuilder, your customers will have the opportunity to either pay using a PayPal account or using a credit card on the PayPal platform.

I would suggest using a three column layout and the Product Catalog Widget in each column. Give it a try and let us know how it goes for you.

Hi,
yes, I know...but in this country it is just the account number+bank code...not the card number...
and even bank told me it is ok to put that number on my web as everybody does it- on similar sites as ebay...this number is also given to anyone that wants to put money in your bank- e.g.companies etc... it is therefore not a secret number...I will give it to customer anyway...so what can be a problem displaying it on my website?
But anyway, thanks for worrying...is always better if people care:)

Hi Lili,

I suggest that you go to ecwid.com and look at their video. They have specific instructions for Yola built sites.

Ecwid have a huge number of payment options and potential payment gateways.

Ok many thanks to all of you for tips and advices...I will learn, try and let you know if it can be done:)

The ECWID.com- dont you know if they do unlike paypal - send a conformation email to me of the things my customers actually bought?
...because as here Brianna said- through paypal people can also pay on my debit card without subscribing to paypal- however they will still charge me...

Would you know if ECWID charge less than paypal?
(I dont mind so much the%, but +the 30p charge is sometimes higher than some of my items in this country so I will go in minus:)

And if I chose ECWID I will then not use payapal widged, correct?
thanx

Hi Lili,

I'll give you a broad outline of an e-commerce site and the components:

Your catalogue: of products generally with a description and a price.
The shopping cart: which in effect collects the selected products of a specific user
The shipping: this may be post, personal pickup, air-mail, logistics transport
The payment gateway(s): In many systems you can offer a number of alternative payments including PayPal and a number of similar facilities (often country or region specific), Wire transfer, Bank deposit, Personal Cheque, Credit cards, Postal Cheques.

The variables after product selection are generally shipping type and payment gateway.

When your customer has made their selection and made their payment then the gateway will send them a receipt and you will receive a notification of the order with all relevant details and payment advice if this has been made at this time.

Specifically with Ecwid.

If you have less than 100 items in your catalogue then there is no fee whatsoever. it is free.

If you have >100 items then you pay $17 (USD) per month.

Ecwid are not your payment gateway, they are your catalogue facilitator and shopping cart.

Payment is a separate part of the overall and there are fees:

Making payment through any system has charges but these aren't related to Ecwid. They do not take any commission whereas there are other systems that do.

If your customer makes a direct payment into your bank account they will have a transaction fee to pay and it's possible that the recipient may also be charged a receiving fee.

Personal Cheques certainly have a receiver fee and in many cases also an account fee for the owner.

Wire transfer has a fee.

Postal cheques have fees.

PayPal and other similar services can be cheaper than many of these but depends on the price of the article.

Covering your costs is the challenge of all businesses whether on-line or on-street. You have to work the catalogue to do this. Sometimes with minimum value of purchase; sometimes with offered benefits like future discounts while pricing the transaction to cover cost and make a profit. Sometimes with free shipping over a certain amount, this is generally offered at some point as the formulas that a business uses to cover costs is geared to a single product whereas multiple products don't cost multiples of the single price to dispatch and at some point there is enough profit in the transaction that a retailer can offer a discount by including free shipping.

Hello everyone,
I would like to create an e-shop on FREE yola...

to display more than 200 clothes (3photos of each with 5 words description+price+no.)

and will display my bank account no. directly on my website (No Paypal etc. as they charge a fee for sold items and my things will sell for very little anyway+ not many customers will be willing to use them in my country)

what could I then use to display them (not in a messy list):

-in Gallery option- I cannot write a discreption+price nor can I put detail of items...perhaps just behind each other...
-inserting photo one by one- same problem as above..unless I put text box under each- not sure if the site then will not take ages to load etc.plus it will be awfully long list over 10pages:)
-using paypal cart and tell the shopper not to proceed is silly:)

And tell on top saying to customers to email me their order, so I know what they paid for is a bit untrustworthy...

Any good suggestions? Anyone succeeded with this on free yola somehow?
What is the most I could get near to an idea of e-shop on free yola?
Anyone could post a free-website?
Or free-yola is not an ideal choice for e-shop...would you then know some better?
many many thanx

Many thanks for all the advices and special thanks for taking your time to write me all about the e-shop-e.g.catallog, shopping cart, shipping, payments gataway. It made it clear to me, I thought that it is all one- thanks!!!!

The NEW online store (not sure about Beta-bugs?) will it be available also for free subyola sites? When? Cos its exactly what I need now, unfortunatly I am not a merchant to be able to try it...

I think I am happier with paypal product-display more than ekwid....as I have now about 900 items, will be ok with paypal to put 100 items on 1page (1-3photos of each) 10 pages in total (no subpages)- or the free site will have problems loading +displaying? Are there any limits?

First time I should drop a 3colum page widged- or a 1colum widget +in it a text widget- or the paypal cataloque displays product in 3colums anyway-
How to start a blank page?
I will have to drag and drop the paypal cataloque widget everytime with new product after saving details from the last one? or there will be a botton add new?

Does your paypal widget have shipping options+DIFFERENT POSTAL COSTS- by post +extra charge and pay after collection- with different postal charge and by person-0 charge option?
Or how could I go around it?

If somebody decides to pay after receiving- or by person, I will just have them to send me a email with order- I quess
And have there separate paypal button for them to pay me or email them my account number to pay me on...it just does not look profesional:)
Paying by VISA on net card to card and receiving is free here with some banks (that is why I was not happy that I cannot display more than 1photo of an item on your site+ in some order, so it does not look messy...but I perhaps need the proceeding form anyway...

I checked with paypal- customer can either pay by paypal or as a quest by VISA card. NO OTHER OPTIONS-no Google checkout, payU, postal order, cash etc...pity...

And they do send conformation emails-
You will get a confirmation e-mail for each sale. You can setup an Instant Payment Notification system where the notification will be sent to a server of your choice. Your web developer needs to program a listener on that server and then notifications can be routed to any e-mail address you want.-
do you have the listener already on your site or how can I do it???

Thanks again and hopefully I will be able to start soon:)

Hi lilli,

The Yola e-com store will not be free. it will be a subscriber feature.

There are no real limits with page numbers in the yolasite subdomains. The Site size has a maximum of 1 Gigabyte which is huge and you won't come anywhere near that for a 900 item catalogue using web-optimised images (say 10 - 20 Kilobytes per image).

With regards to shipping costs. You can use the PayPal shipping calculator facility on their site.

I don't know what you mean by listener? My apologies, I have just realised what that means. IPN is what I call it and had stupidly forgotten the meaning of it. Yes I have set that up on an Ecwid cart and it's great. I had it direct to my phone by sending an SMS (but expensive for overseas sent SMS here).

100 items per page is far too many. The research has been done and that is why the shopping carts tend to limit their image grid catalogues to a few items per page. It becomes too confusing for the mind to retain... Your customers will not enjoy scrolling the page with so much data. I suggest that you break it down in categories and place something in the order of 9 to 12 items per page for a grid construction. If you make it a table construction then a list of 30 or so items per page is OK.

Good luck with this.
Hi, I really would not consider using paypal as a shopping cart if you are serious about eCommerce, it is fine for a few products but gives off an amateurish vibe to customers . To be taken seriously you need a product like ECWID which was mentioned or wait for the Yola one.

Lili hi,

I think your plan is very brave and I really want to offer support for you particularly as you get going.

Do you have any estimate in your mind of how many items you will sell per month and how much profit you would hope to make in the early days? I don't want to know specifically but if you have an idea of this we may be able to help you start slowly and work up.

Do you have an idea of your most likely to sell items? How many items would you expect to be the most popular?

The strategy would be to add your most likely to sell items and hopefully these will add a bit of cash flow. As RogersISConsulting has mentioned the use of the PayPal shopping cart may not be your best option both for sales and for management.

Thanks for all your answers- see thats the thing I have no idea about how and what will sell...its just going to be mostly clothes- one off item...(never the same product again)...
Therefore I do want people to have it all in one site to choose...are you saying it will not load well, if I put 100 items on (or are you just suggesting the estetic site of 30 items per page only?)...cos I would prefere 100 as it would not work much dividing the categories...e.g. trousers:)...I could do subpages but I am scared that it will then upload slow more often...and I tried opening+ just naming even more than 10 pages, but I deleted them as they would not even open (11-15) an they were empty...

Yes, I am not also particularly happy about paypal only...they even charge now for item 4, 9% +20p to sell...but for so many items, where I need to show 1-5 photos of each- its quite handy...and easy for me as a drop WIDGET:)

I still dont know if paypal shows shipping cost...but I can have it already included, I quess...and obviously tell people to contact me direct in other ways of shipping...

And as I checked around people here are using paypal more than anything else...(PayU they complain about) and Google Checkout didnt get perhaps famous yet ́:)

The LISTENER according to paypal is the auto-INFORMER of the SALE...and I was asking if it is set already within the PAYPAL WIDGET..so that I will see on my email that someone bought something...or what can I do to set it up?

First time I should drop a 3colum page widged- or a 1colum widget +a text widget in- or the paypal cataloque displays product in 3colums anyway?
How to start a blank page?
Or how I make the TABLE construction?...6products in line horizontal (I think paypal widget lets you ater click on photo see anyway other photos of the same on separate page)

Ecwid I will probably use for my other art site...for that it will be perfect:)
Thanks

Hi Lili,

Thanks for addressing the queries and it's a good thing to know.

The page loading issue with more pages isn't the issue. It's the page size that really defines a page loading time and generally this is a function of image numbers and their corresponding file size. i mentioned suggested imag file sizes.. You can have 100's of pages per site and they will load successfully.

You mentioned dropping a widget 1 to 5 times per item. That is quite difficult as the alignment and photo sizes have to be exact for every picture. You cannot have some portrait and some landscape and expect an easy dropping in a widget and the more you have, the more critical the precision becomes to satisfy you.. There is nearly always tweaking of the image within such a holder and it takes serious time. If you don't do it though that's when the appearance of the site can look a bit chaotic.

PayPal is the best known Payment gateway for sure. Google Checkout restricts it's membership to certain countries.

I think that you will need to set the IPN (listener) through an API with PayPal.

If you plan to be advised of sales by email then there isn't much need to setup the IPN as you wiill already be receiving that email from the standard PayPal processes.
Hi, here are some ideas to help.

1) To sell seriously on a website, you need to forget about using the Pal Pal shopping cart - why ? shoppers leave your site and it goes to the Pay Pal to display the items, the slowness and interaction with the shoppers gives off a poor impression of you. Pay Pal is fine for a few items and someone who is selling as a small part of their business.

2) The payment processing by Pal Pal is very good if the Payment Pro plan is used, yes it is additional on top of the same fees as the standard plan, but with the Pro plan your shoppers stay on your site for the payment. This gives a professional impression for you.

3) You need a shopping cart they stays within the website, that is why Yola is creating one, both Cashie and ECWID.com do this and work with Pay Pal for the actual payment processing. From looking at ECWID.com it looks amazing.

Could anyone please tell me, how is possible to do WEB OPTIMIZED IMAGES (thanks for your previous suggestion) in group, not just one by one as in Photoshop?

I need to select e.g.30 photos and make the size web-little for paypal widget display on the free yola - what should be the small SIZE of one image???
(=about 3000 photos on one free yola online shop:)
as I will have 3x (=3photos of 1 image-item on sale) 30-100 images per page-10 pages in total.

...or will that be done automatically as I UPLOAD my PHOTOS onto PAYPAL WIDGET in online shop? No need for me to downsize the image beforehand?

Any free software for that?
Many thanks
Lili - if you are in Canada or UK - then you can get a custom domain and bronze yola package for 1st year free. Canada get your business online and Getting British Business Online are the programs.

There are quite a few free software programs that do what you want. One I've used for years is Easy Thumbnails, http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/. You can resize a batch of images to the size you want.

A file size of 10 Kb would be OK.
3000 x 10 Kb is 30 Mb and well within your allowed max of 1 Gb.
This image size will also allow for fast loading.

Lili, hello. Jeans recommendation above is really good. Also go look at:
http://www.irfanview.com/ it does lots of things and is also free (but for commercial you may have to pay something).
Goodness, good luck with all those images! Look forward to seeing site when completed. Also what you decide on eventually for cart etc.

Thank you all you are really so very helpful!!! Many thanks for calculating all those sizes and making it really brief and clear, Gop! Excellent!

10kb thumbnail photo- would it need a watermark and copyrights as well or not cos not even a website can steal and use it so small?...for my other art project. With that I will probably try out EKWID- DOWNLOADS- not sure if they protect art with watermarks- download after pay...not sure even how to price my art yet:)

Well, I would use probably Paypal pick and drop widget cart on free Yola even though Paypal charge 3,4%+20cents from sale, only because I need to display 3 images of one item- and I supposed it cannot be done without this widget, as it will look messy with 3000 images just put next to each other- I thought using Blogger.com or other Blogspot etc., or WEBNODE etc.,but they do not have anything similar like PAYPAL- CART PHOTO DISPLAY WIDGET-...and I have 1000 items, so cannot use free Ekwid cart, as I decided to do my first charity project for FREE:)
There will be lots of work and I do not fancy also checking if I paid here and there the correct amount for hosting, cart etc. free is no hassle:) And the work is enough as I anyway need to learn for my many projects I am planning to do once I learn how:)

You seem very knowledgable:) Many thanks for advices given.
Would you also know if ekwid does automatically the thumbnail size just for view but customer will then actually download the high res photo or how does it work with ekwid downloads- you know I mean the usual downloads seen in stocks etc.

OK It's a conditional answer :)

For your products you can upload any size image within their limit restrictions and you can set the thumbnail display sizes in the configuration pages. You can also set the Product display images to another size if you wish.

For digital (virtual products) like the final images purchased by the customer these are sent at the resolution that you have placed them in the file holding area for such products. So it's pretty flexible and no compromise on quality.

If you have lots of products the product images should still be 10 kb or less for efficiency and convenience of management. The final sold images are at the resolution that you want to send them at.

yes:)
sorry you got me confused a bit now...the product display paypal widget I am not concern about anymore- you said 10 kb per image or less- so I will do so- its just for people to view the product/item on sale. And I use Jean's FOOKES for banch of images to downsize to 10KB (as IRFAN is non-commercial use- but thanks anyway:)

Virtuals-Photos/Paintings at ekwid- I download it in the high res I wish to sell it in- but then what about the viewed thumbnail- will that be small res? I was just asking if you would already know, that ekwid has it set up like ministocks do or I have to do it all myself- downsize for thumbnals as well+ write there the restriction of various use of my images...you know the usual...

Basically I needed to know if ekwid will be good in this respect or I should look elsewhere, cos it will be mad trying to put all info on, then battling with the html code etc:) thanx
