Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.

Hey Lee - could you post the exact error that Google gives you so that we can take a look? Do they have a specific error message?

Hi Lee - I'm trying to find the reasons for the error message and why it's happening and will come back to you. Sorry for the delay...

Argh this is frustrating! Google Webmaster don't give any specific information on the reason for the error which makes it more difficult to find out why you're seeing it. Reasons seem to range from connection problems, caching, actual sitemap problems etc. I will ask one of the engineers on our side, but being Sunday you may have to wait until tomorrow.

A lot of the suggestions on the forums are to resubmit the sitemap and that makes Google happy again - could you give that a try? I am testing with one of my own sites, but so far I don't get the error :(

Perhaps we should go and post on their forum to see if we can get any information that way? Is there anyone else seeing this error on their Google Webmaster account?

Very annoying, I must say... Would you be able to post on their forum at all to see whether they can give you a reason why it's happening? http://www.google.com/support/forum/p...

Having said that though, we're really aware that Google Webmaster are changing things around (as we saw with verification last week) and they didn't make it public until a few days later. So, we're keeping an eye on their blog for any announcements about changes wrt sitemaps. I'll also check with one of our engineers on Monday.

This was the answer from the google forum:

Phil Payne has posted an answer to the question "sitemap errors":

Missing nameservers:

http://www.intodns.com/hexham.info

Beat up your hosting provider.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I dont think this is correct - i checked my domain name host and the name servers are in place.

If you can make anymore sense out of it i would apreciate it.

Hey Lee - sorry I'm only getting back to you now. Are you able to contact 123-reg.co.uk to find out if they have any feedback on the 'missing name servers'? I would guess that your best bet would be to try the advice on the Google forum and then come back to them if it's not the case - it would be interesting to know what happens!

I as well Ed...I think it is Google and their current crop of changes....They have changed Google Base also and we will have to have a feed to use it such as FTP etc.....I have my site map submitted on Yahoo and Bing, not a single error in over a year.

Not only am i getting errors, sometimes its successful but for bout day or so been mainly error, ive also gone down 4 pages. I had 28 pages indexed, which really is pitiful when i have 170 pages submitted, but as of tonight its now on 24.

Not good wherever the fault lies

Atticus,

Keep an eye on the erros and resubmit if you see it, i doubt its directly related to you losing 4 pages from the index, i have gone up 40 pages while the errors have been occuring... I would look at your overall SEO.

The main thing i think you need to do is get more inbound links to the site.

You can get a few more ideas about what to do by running your site through this http://www.websitegrader.com

From what i have learned about SEO the main thing is inbound links from pages with a high page rank.

Hope this helps, Lee.

Marije, John, Ed, Atticus and everyone else,

I dont think its got anything to do with the name servers, the guy at the google forum just ran my domain through a dns tool and it came up with a minor error, the name servers are in place + we all use different domain registars, My guess is 1 of 2 things, either Johns right and its googels infustructure casuing the problem OR its at Yolas end something to do with the availablity of the XML documents.

I'm not going to pretend i fully understand how the xml part of your system works (is it from a seperate server etc.) but this might be something you (Marije) want to talk through with an engineer. Ask them if there would be any reason the .xml documents would be un reachable at certain times of the day?
Or at least ask them to monitor it for a day / week.

Thank you Lee - bit-by-bit we are ruling various factors out :)

I have been talking to engineers on our side but it seems to be a mystery to us as well. Very frustrating and we're trying to find out if there's anything we're doing that is causing this.

Hi there All,

Just an update - I have spent the last few hours looking through the Google Forums, asking questions and trying to piece things together. As we all know they have recently done some updates and I am hoping this was caused by that update.

I have had a little bit of luck in picking up that all the sitemaps that are displaying errors seem to have a "/" at the end of the domain name. Other than that there is nothing linking the problematic sites. I am not sure if this is linked at the moment but our engineers are currently looking into it and some other possibilities and we will hopefully have something for you all soon.

Please let me know if you are seeing something different or if you have any more info for us.

Many thanks for your patience.

Thansk for your help Jeremy, The only variable that does'nt seem to fit with that theory is the fact the sitemaps work most of the time - then suddenly for some reason they dont - its almost like at a certain time. If we could somehow see exactly the time and date that the download from google failed to work, i would bet they were at the same time period.

It's very strange.

You can submit the site and it works then on a later download gives an error, OR you can submit and it wont work then work on a resubmit.

I dont get it - thats what makes me think its either googles fault or a certain time when Yola xml files are not reachable.

Its a mystery to me :)

Lets hope it fix's soon.

Lee.

I've been reading threads at the google forum and i'm starting to fully believe its a problem with google.

Numerous people from different hosts are getting the same intermittent problem.

I'm 99% sure now its nothing to do with Yola - so you can call off the witch hunt :)

Google Employee Response:

"Hi guys
When the Sitemap status changes from the "X" to "OK" and back, it could be a sign that we're just not able to reach your server as quickly as we would like. In general, this is not something you need to worry about - it's normal for our systems to retry these URLs should there be a temporary glitch (which can always happen :-)). However, should you notice that this status persists and especially if you notice that there are many crawl errors such as unreachable errors, this would be something you'd want to bring up with your hoster so that they can take a look.

Hope it helps!
John"

--------------
that doesnt really say "its our fault" they are still passing the blame -- it seems like a bit of a coincidence that numerous people are getting the same error from different hosts.

I also hope it is all good. Our engineers have been looking at this and they now think that it could be a load balancing issue that causes Google to be unable to load our sitemaps at certain times of the day. We are not 100% if this is the cause but we are monitoring the situation. If you get any more sitemap errors, please let us know.

That sort of makes sense....If Google loaded my site map it seemed to fail always over the last week....Most of the time I could clear it up with a resubmit until their next load.

Hey everyone,

We have been monitoring this in our own accounts and this problem appears to be fixed on Google's end. Please let us know if you are still experiencing problems with your sitemaps.

Thanks,

Ray - see the response from Google above. Quoting it again here:

Instead of worrying each time you see an error, just check if the error persists over time. It is probably just a temporary issue with Google being unable to reach our servers. However, if the errors persist, let us know.
