It's almost landscaping season for me and as some of you may know, that's what I do to make money. I want to get a really good head start... maybe with a kick butt website?

Help with...

  • choosing the perfect template
  • deciding whether to use a custom banner or the provided one
  • deciding whether to use a custom menu or default menu (and if custom menu, help with finding one and applying it)
  • help with information I should put in my site (don't want to flood the site with too much unnecessary stuff)
  • Any other ideas you may have!

Hi, Donald,

My choice is always to go with the custom choice--It generally looks more professional and you can make it fit your company image not the other way around. As far as templates, I always use either Squeaky Clean or Burlap. These are as close to a blank page as you can get. Then go and google all the landscaping companies in your area and check a few nationwide too. See what they're doing on their websites and make yours better.

Personally, when looking for a company like landscapers or whatever, I like to know at least a basic price upfront. I hate when a company says call for a quote and gives no general idea of what pricing is like. I realize the job has to be customized but I like to have some idea what I'm getting into. Tell what sort of work you do, give some testimonials if you have them, good images of your work is always helpful, a contact page and an about us page. People like to know there's a real person behind the webpage. A picture of those cute babies wouldn't hurt either :) I'll be happy to help further once you get going with it.

As for the html above, I think it doesn't work because of the body tag. I think you have to have it in a div or table.

Yea, maybe I'll use a family photo for the About Us section lol.

I'm thinking about having a one price fits all option for basic lawn mowing.

Thinking about $5 for a first service and $20 thereafter. First and second service has to be paid upfront to receive $5 first service. This will get me customers to start with.

And for specialized services such as bush trimming, mulch, etc. I'm thinking about changing it from what I use to do is give quotes based on property to an hourly charge plus materials with the promise and guarantee our company works in a speedy and friendly quality of service. I'll list the rates for each type of work based on difficulty of that job and how long (on average) it should take us to do (give examples of sizes such as 100 Square feet of mulch will take approx. 30 minutes and so many bags).

On my website last year I started to list EVERY plant that practically exists and got over my head and was unable to finish the thousands of plants lol... but this year, I think I'll include a plant gallery with only plants native to this area and inform customers almost any plant listed on the website can be planted in this area - pending the soil will take to the plant.

Hey, I got an idea. I need a "Your Yard Before" and "Your Yard After" picture.

Does anyone have a pic of an old shack with no grass and a ball of hay flying across the yard like you see in Westerns? That'll be the before picture, then I need a picture of Bill Gates Yard for the After picture. LOL

Ok, here's what I have so far...

http://sitebuilder.yola.com/sites/D7d...

However, please note, the bottom is not in the same format/look as the rest. I'm kind of perplexed how I can add my file download in the same kind of background/border I'm using. Is there a way I can add my file to a text widget and use the border/background code I'm using with the file download?

It looks good except the red on blue is hard on my eyes but maybe that's just me. I think you could use some icons and images to break up so much text. Here is a great place to get free icons for personal or commercial use: http://icons.mysitemyway.com There are lots and lots of them and in different colors. Here's a sample image of just one:

Also, you can link to a file in a text widget. Just type the text for the name of the file then click the link button. The link for files is all the way at the bottom of the box that comes up. You would add your border/background code first by using the html button in the text widget.

I also noticed a couple typos: We have provide 8 years of service

withing 15 days

Should be "provided" and "within"

Hope this helps!

Donald the very first thing you should do and maybe you already have is getting listed in Google and Bing local searches. This will pretty much assure you of being high up in search results when people in your area search for landscaping.....Remember search engines are IP sensitive to the user searching....and you have an actual local business. When I did this with what was then Live search microsoft sent a code via USPS to my home/place of business to verify me as a real business.....It is all free and you get to make a business profile with photos and links back to your site.....Free is always my fav price....Notice I didn't include Yahoo....they want 299.00 to list in their directory and they wonder why they are getting left behind....Too bad they went from cutting edge to falling off the edge.

my last year landscaping website (and not even close to as good as this one will be) is listed in google's local index, I've even obtained two of my largest customers that way. One for $800 and one for $550. I definately plan on updating google local. But I didn't do Bing or Yahoo, I will be sure to check into those.... and then I notice what you say about Yahoo.... I think that might be the reason I never listed in Yahoo... Not sure why they would charge if the "better" search engines don't charge for their local listings.

Proofreading is what put me through college!

I put my site on Google's local business center but haven't showed up yet. But I still show up on the first page under the local listings (the ones at the top with the map)--I put in "website designer in south milwaukee" in my title on the home page and it showed up on the first page for that phrase the next day! I'm hoping to get somebody to give me a good review and maybe that will get me into the local listings at the top.

I am in a small town and my items drop ship to my customers from another state.....So local listings only really help me for SEO reasons....For you and Donald I think it is a very good thing....Diane do you offer to stay on retainer as a webmaster? Many do well in the role of just running the reciprocal linking pages and finding link partners for that.

I just typed into google, "Personal Touch Landscaping Deltona Florida" and my business information, website, and a map of my location was the first thing on the page. However though, if you type in "Landscaping Deltona Florida" I'm not so lucky.

Hey Donald, just woke up and saw this thread. I'm not sure if you changed your site since the preview you posted awhile ago, but since it's landscaping...maybe use more greenish color?

I couldn't find a greenish color that would look good. To bright on the eyes, blue and red's not the greatest but better than any green I could come up with. If you have any ideas of good colors, let me know the RGB and I'll use that color maybe.

go to my site, http://personaltouchlandscaping.info and pay special attention to the "referral contest" section. Tell me if it's a good idea to get lots of customers. I tried setting limitations and goals before prize can be awarded.
