How can I create a new index page while keeping the old index page alive and linked?

Monique...I just found this thread and have a similar problem to that of 'reev'. I too have a website that I need to change the index page. The problem is this: I only need to create a 'routing page' - I guess that is the best way to describe it....I need this 'routing page to come up first - before anything else - like the index page. However, the old site index page I still need to keep and actually link to. I have tried several ideas on my own, but everything I have tried has been a mess. Any ideas?

Hi Kris

What you can do is go to the old index page first. Click on the arrow beside "save" and then click on "save page as", put in a new name. Now you will have two pages exactly the same.

Then, you can either delete or add content to the old index page.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi Kris10,

Peter and I have both responded to another thread you posted this problem on: http://getsatisfaction.com/yola/topics/convert_homepage_index_html_into_blogpage_possible. Can you take a look there and see what we have said and let us know how we can further assist.

Yes, I have read these and replied...I just wasn't sure if anyone was answering questions on this site anymore or not. But I am still having issues with the whole 'renaming'-thing. I think I may need some step-by-step insights...thanks.

If you now have your Routing page as the index page, what we need to do is find out what the name of your old index page is now. Did you do a Save As on the old index page and give it a new name?

Can you give me a link to your site and also tell me what name you gave your old index page. If you are not sure, that is ok, tell me what type of information is on it and I will try to find it.

Well, I had thought about the whole 'replacing' thing before I actually renamed it. So I was able to undo my attempt. So I don't need to find the old index page...luckily.

Are you still trying to link to the old index page? You said that your site was now coming up to the Routing page but that the link to your old index page doesn't work. What is the name of the old index page so that I can help you fix the link?

No, I reversed it when I couldn't get it up...so I guess another question would be...if I rename the new routing page as 'index' and replace the old index page as, prov_index, do I need to change the links on all the graphics, etc. on the rest of the site so that prov_index will appear? That will take forever!

If you have linked all of the pictures to the page called index they will go to whatever page is index.

Example: You have a picture of a flower going to the index page, you change the index page to be called prov_index and create a new index page. The picture of the flower that is linked to the page called index will go to whatever page has that name, which is now the new index page, not the old index page which is now called prov_index.

Does that help?

So the answer is yes, if you rename your page but all ready have links going to that page, the links would need to be re-created to go to the right page.

Boy that sounds confusing!

Emmy, yeah, that is what I figured - I was just hoping that there was an easier way around it...a shortcut, you know? But I guess not. At least that helps answer my question. Thanks.

Sure thing, sorry there isn't another way to do it.
