Hello,
That is a great question! We have a tutorial on Promoting Your Website where you will find some ideas for getting more traffic to your site. I hope that helps, I am sure some others will chime in here with some tips on getting traffic.

Kind Regards,
Emmy

Hello Ryan,

I guess there are many favourite ways of increasing traffic and when it comes down to it they're all covered in Emmy's essays in the link she has posted.

The two most potent ways of getting it to increase are fresh quality of content and links from other good sites to yours.

With those two elements you really are in good standing. The third element is patience There's little luck and there are no victims

I think that to deliberately put an advertisement for smoking in a games/music based website is irresponsible. It's irrelevant that they're herbal buds, the chances are that they do damage as stated in the fine print by the retailer.

Neither cigarettes nor smoking should be glamorised in any way at all especially when it comes to promoting this to the young.

I removed the images because they were upsetting readers.

The consequences of smoking are really unpleasant. Various malignancies some requiring disfiguring surgery, emphysema, heart disease to name very few.

50% of smokers will die 6 years prematurely. That's a fact.

Link exchanging is one of the ideas mentioned in the Promoting Your Website tutorial so I don't think what smiley31 posted was spam. If it was, I don't think she intended any harm by it. I would think that posting those ugly images is spam or trolling, and in fact it reminds me a little bit of 4Chan in here.

I'm brand new to the Yola community, but I'm not new to websites and forums in general and I don't see the aforementioned website as being a "games based site" by any stretch. It looks to me like a personal website, almost a blog. I don't want to link exchange with her because our sites have nothing in common, but I am not going to bash her site for being what it is.

I'm not trying to make any enemies, but that outburst just seemed a little bit out of line.

Hello Ellavemia,

Thanks for your response.

The pictures are the reality of smoking. They are ugly, they are a warning of the consequences of smoking and they're placed on the front of cigarette packets by a responsible authority.

The site is a mixture of games , music etc. You're right not just a games site.

If anyone promotes smoking then they are irresponsible. The interested group in this site are likely to be young. they are very vulnerable to such advertising.

The spamming was an accusation based on the fact that this post was hidden in an unrelated thread.

Linking is an important aspect of site promotion, but the end doesn't justify the means.

I agree that smoking is irresponsible and promoting it is more so, but people are free to create whatever they want on their websites within reason. I don't think she was out of line posting the link. Those who are offended by it can ignore it. We aren't being forced to link to her. Personally, I was more put off by the supposedly hilarious videos. It's just not my thing, but that doesn't mean someone won't find it entertaining and possibly useful.

Maybe I'm still coming across wrong. I'm not defending her site because I'm against the idea but indifferent to it. I just don't think she intended to open herself up to a lecture and some pictures which would be at home on rotten.com. I don't mean any disrespect because I understand having a strong opinion against something harmful.

Hello Ryan...

The thing I do is focus on raising my website grade at websitegrader.com ... having a high grade doesn't tell people, "he has a high grade so let's visit him again" instead having a high grade will ensure you have optimized metadata such as good keywords, a good description, a good page title, a good traffic rank with alexa, google pageranking, google indexed pages, and many other options needed to obtain more traffic. So what I would suggest is going to websitegrader.com to determine your website grade (the actual number at this point isn't really important) but the information it gives you on your site will help you to better optimize your site, generally, having a good website grade drives more traffic because it means you have a good optimized site. Try getting your grade and following what it says is good or bad about the marketing effectiveness (traffic potential) of your site.

The next best thing is to help others on this forum (this is for starters with no traffic). Still, after about 2 months open, 67% of my traffic is from getsatisfaction, 20% of my traffic is from searches from search.live.com, search.msn.com, google search, yahoo search, and images.google.com. about 10% of my traffic is from MySpace (I have over 7,000 friends making advertising easy) and about 3% is from other sources such as link exchanging and website directories.

Another thing I have determined... when it comes to search results about 90% of them are from images.google.com ... this is from making sure your photos and pictures have alternative text and are searchable. To make sure a picture has alternative text...

If you uploaded a photo and are using the image widget, the properties tab to the right will have a section to include alternative text. If you're using a text widget to insert your picture, open the html of your text widget and go to the line where your picture is...

Text
Text
Blank Space
Picture (line 4)
Text

In this example it should be line 4.

check for ... alt="alternative text" or alt=" " or SRC

If the first option is there, alternative text is already entered. If the second option is there, all you have to do is fill the quotations with alternative text as to what the picture is... use something most likely people will search, try to avoid long sentances, but rather keywords. If you don't have the first to options, look for "SRC" in the line with the picture. Type as follows (do not type SRC as it already exists...

alt="alternative text"; SRC

Hi Smiley31. I was not online while this thread was active and I am only noticing it now. I did not see the images and links that have now been removed. However, if you received feedback from this group that they were offensive I think you acted very wisely to remove them and your site will only benefit from this. Personally I find the swine-flu cartoon in poor taste and this is one I would also consider deleting - both because of the profanity and the subject matter. Please review the content policy of the Yola terms of service (http://www.yola.com/terms) for future reference. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
