There are javascripts out there that can catch the mouse right click event and prevent the user from being able to right-click and download the images. However, any somewhat savvy user can easily by-pass these scripts, and they mess with the over-all usability of your website; and as such are not recommended. This prevents a lot but interferes a lot with functionality of your site. the reality is that when you look at a site you already have access to the content. A simple screen capture will allow people to copy text by OCR programs etc.

Have the feeling that there's nothing foolproof and a lot of tries at it. There's an Australian company that specialises in this software for about $30 AUD.

The other way id make an image of your text and select a font that is hard to machine recognise.

The argument being that most wouldn't want to go the trouble of interpreting an image back into text.

You are correct Hussain,

It's a little bit like locks on a door. It really only stops the casual thief from breaking in. The professional would be able to get inside within a second :)

Peter, thanks for helping on this one. That post by Christo is very helpful.

Disabling copy and paste on your site is not worth the effort or the problems it creates. Basically once you publish your site, it is vulnerable to copying in the same way that any published document can be copied. It is just one of the hazards of being an author. In the same way that no one can render a printed page un-copyable, there is no foolproof way to protect a webpage from being copied. However, there is legal protection under the DMCA: http://tinyurl.com/q2m9m

So if someone does copy your work you can send a DMCA compliant take down notice to the owner of their site or the webhost.

There is no cost to this. It is an act that protects people who post intellectual property on the internet. Anyone can invoke it whenever they need to as long as they can demonstrate that they have a valid claim.

The DMCA is a regulation, a law. You don't have to join anything to be protected by the act. Is that what you mean Hussain?

I like this... http://www.copyscape.com

At least you can track if someone uses your info and contact them about it if you want to.

Just a thought on peter's post on converting text to an image... if you do that, the content can't be crawled and would diminish your stats.

There is no good answer for this issue, but remember what they say...
"Imitation is the highest form of flattery"

(I always wondered who "they" are - does anyone know?)

Peace

Good call Guido. You'd have to put it all in your file name or "alt text" and back into the same situation.

They is them but never us.
