hi !
i am using squeakyclean style for my website and would like to add pictures on it of about 500 (h) x 333 (w) pixels without having to scroll down. I already got rid of the page header, but is it possible to reduce the space between the picture widget and the menu even more ?

Hi Evelyne

Unfortunately, you cannot reduce the space between the menu and the picture widget.

Based on the dimension of your photos, I believe the only way to not scroll is to perhaps make your images smaller. The dimensions you gave are quite large.

too bad, i will make them smaller then...

and i have another question:
i would like to embed a custom made video player in my site (JW FLV player from longtail.com), because i don't like the design of the youtube player. i would like a simple screen without scrollbar of either 240 x 320 pixels or 512 x 384. On the site they say i can simply add a piece of code and 2 files (player.swf and swfobject.js) on my site to make it work, but yola doesn't accept the upload of the swfobject.js file. Why is that ?
or is there another solution ?
greetings,

Hi Evelyne

While you can add HTML and javascript snippets with our HTML editor it is not possible to upload .html files or .js files. Unfortunately we have been forced to restrict these uploads for security reasons, as internet criminals use this as an easy loophole to create phishing sites.

So while you can embed a flash file with the HTML editor, if the file you upload is a .js file it is not going to work.

I can look around for other options that do not require a .js file upload. Can you tell us a bit more about your requirements for your video player, so that we can see what else is out there?

Also, have you looked at Vimeo.com - it is a popular alternative to Youtube.

hi monique,
did you have a look at the www.longtail.com JW FLV player ? that's about what i am looking for, something very simple, without any brands on the screen, preferribly even without scrollbar. is it possible to costumize a vimeo player (choose size and remove adds) ? then it would be a solution. and how can i embed it in my website ? i would prefer to play video's directly from my site than to play them through a site like youtube (or vimeo ?). isn't it much faster to play them directly from your site ?

i'm looking for a screen only player or a very simple player with or without scrollbar. as long as there is no brand name on the screen or the bar and as long as it looks nice, it's good for me :)
what screen size is acceptable for video ? 240 x 360 or 384 x 512 ?

thanks for looking around anyway ! i hope you know something.

Hi evelyne,

The best alternative i have seen is this site - http://www.freevideocoding.com/

You can upload video files to your file manager then use the files URL ie. yoursite.yolasite.com/resources/videofile.flv - so you are actually hosting it from your own site.

From your first question - i dont remember how squeky clean is but maybe you could think about removing the built in menu and making your own.

Hey Duke and Littleus,

thanks for both of your options ! just a slight problem still... i used this code, knowing that my site is evelynemontens.com and the file is called testflashvideo.flv, just like the duke's example :

><!-- START FreeVideoCoding.com -->
<!-- END FreeVideoCoding.com -->

But it doesn't work... there's only 'buffering' on the video screen... i added the code in the html screen of a text widget, 'cause i can't find another way to access the html. am i doing this wrong ? sorry, but i'm more visual than code minded :)

oops ! i suddenly embedded a video player instead of writing down the html. i meant that in the usual code, i put : file=www.evelynemontens.yolasite.com/resou... and then follows the code: &autoStart=true...

i hope you know what i mean ;) greetz evelyne

check list
1. the file is in your file manager
2. you have re published your site since adding it
3. use this url - http:// evelynemontens.yolasite.com/resources/testflashvideo.flv

(i added a space between the http:// and evelyn.... only so it showed the full address here - GS shorten url links)

uhm, i really tried, with http://evelynemontens.yolasite, etc... but it still doesn't work. it keeps saying 'buffering' on the screen. the .flv file is 5,7 mb, shouldn't be too big right ?

Hi - i just tested it myself - it will buffer for ever in the site builder - have you checked if its working on a 'preview page' or on the published site?

worked great for me http://hexham.info/test

i tried it on the preview page as well, isn't it already supposed to work on that one ? i would prefer to know if it works before updating and publishing my site, but if that is the only option... ?!?

yours works fine indeed :)

your going to have to publish the site after adding the video in order for it to have a 'live' URL.

Im sure once you publish that will fix it - you see, the file is not published to the url you are using, once you do that it will work.

hey Lee the duke and littleus,

i just made a test site through yola (http://testweb.yolasite.com/) to see if it works, and it does, but the animation already shows on the preview page as wel !!!

so i reckon i have to change something in the filepath or the url, because my official site is not evelynemontens.yolasite.com, but simply evelynemontens.com. would the filepath in that case still be: http://evelynemontens.yolasite.com/re... ?

or does it change because i already have a domain name at another server that is linked to yola ???

what i think is that if you add the code in a html widget it does not show up in the editor and if you add the code through a text widget it does. Sounds crazy but its true.
For sure it didnt show up for me in the editor but it worked in preview and published.

Ok, for your second question, because your domain name is already pointed to Yolas servers you can use either address; evely...com or evely....yolasite.com it makes no difference the site should be published to both URL's. Use which ever URL you want.

I was sure it was going to work - i should have suggested a test site yesterday - good thinking.

Hope this explains something.

Hi duke,

i'm not sure if i can follow your explanation. But i tried both options of adding the code in a text or in an html widget.

on the testweb it worked fine and showed on the preview page and on the published page, but on my original site, it still doesn't show in the preview page, so i'm afraid to publish it, because it will probably not work.

Even if i skip the 'yolasite' part in the filepath, it doesn't seem to link to the flashvideo. Can it be that the filepath is not evelynemontens.com/resources, but something else than 'resources' ? Could the file location have another name ?

hope you're not tired of my lack of knowledge yet, but i'm eager to resolve this thing :)

cheers,
evelyne

Hi Evelyne

Sometimes codes won't render in the preview but it will work in the published site. I suggest that you try to publish anyway and see what happens.
