Hello. I originally created a website, buying a domain name, through Then, I was told that was better, cleaner, and easier for new website designers. I created a Yola account, and used the same domain name. But, I did NOT purchase it on Yola. After I was finished with the editing and was ready to publish it, when I clicked "Publish my site", it said I had to choose a domain name because the domain name I had chosen (and paid for on was taken. Obviously by me, just on a different site. I tried moving my domain name / registration / website details and etc, onto Yola, but seeing as Yola can't do that, I just assumed it would be fine. Later I tried again, but it still said the site was active and I had to choose a different domain name. By this time I had pointed the IP address from to (specifically, my site on Yola) and from Yola it was pointed to I then tried to publish my site AGAIN, but it didn't work! I finally got fed up and called to deactivate the domain name on, so that I could activate it on Unfortunately they said they couldn't be of service, and said to try and contact Yola. So here I am. How on Earth do I publish my site from Yola, without losing ownership of the domain name? And how do I deactivate it on Do I even have to? More importantly, do I have to spend more money??

Hello itoxxic

I'm sorry that you've had some trouble with this. I'm hoping that we'll be able to get your site up and running to your domain name.

First of all, you do not need to deactivate your domain with

Here are some instructions that might help you with You need to set up your A Record to point to Yola.

Here's how:

1. Login to your account on by clicking on "Your Account" on the menu toolbar.
2. Once you've logged in, you should be on the "Manage account" page.
3. Click on your domain to configure it.
4. On the next page, scroll right to the bottom. Under "Advanced Technical Settings", click on "Edit IP Address Records" next to the "A".
5. You can now edit your A records. You will want to set the A record for both * and @ (@ might be blank in the textbox). Update both values to: Once you are satisfied that the records are correctly updated, click 'Continue' to apply the changes.
6. will now ask you to confirm your changes. Make sure that everything looks right. It should look like:
`*` points to
@ points to
7. If you are happy with these details, click "Continue"
8. Your domain should now point to Yola. You can test if this has worked by typing your domain into your browser. If all has worked correctly you should end up on a placeholder page displaying your site name. Don't be too worried if this is not the case, bear in mind that DNS changes, like you have just made, can take up to 48 hours to propagate through the internet.
9. Once you have configured your DNS settings, click the yellow "Publish My Site" button in Yola, then select "I already own my domain name" and then "Next step". Enter your domain name and follow the prompts to publish your site. If your site is already published, click the drop down arrow next to the "Update my Site" button, and then select "Publishing Settings" and you will see an option to add a domain you already own.

Please click here for a really useful tutorial outlining the steps to getting and setting up your domain: Using a Domain Name not purchased through Yola.

If you're still having trouble getting this to work, can you please let us know your domain name and we can try to look up the domain settings to see if they have been correctly configured to point to Yola? Thanks.

Hi, Jeanette,

Is the domain name purchased through Yola or a different registrar? If through a different registrar, you will need to transfer the domain to Yola in order to use it with your new site. You can see a tutorial for how to transfer here:

If you have Yola Silver, you can point the domain to your new site. That tutorial is here:

If your domain is purchased from Yola, you can assign the domain to the new site: 1) Login to your Yola account and make sure you are on the "My Sites" page.
2) Click on "Advanced settings" next to the the "Open" button.
3) Make sure the correct site name is selected on the drop-down list on the right.
4) Click on "Assign my domain name to a new site".
5) Choose which site you would like the domain assigned to.
6) Click on "Save".
7) Once done, you will be able to choose which domain is the primary domain and the one the other domain will redirect to.
