This refers to question 6 in the SEO tutorial 1 -Introduction to SEO.

Question 6 asks: What is search engine ranking and how do search engines rank pages? The answer given is : Search engine ranking refers to where a website or page appears in the search engine results page.

However, I can't find the answer to the second part of the question which is "how do search engine rank pages?" Can you please tell me where I might find the answer?

search engines use an algorithm which is a computer estimated guess as to the best place for a website's pages. A search engine ranks pages based on factors such as keywords, content and how it relates to searches, relevance, traffic and popularity, links to your website (popularity and likes), links coming from your site (linking to known spamming sites and low website ranking sites will harm your rank), etc.

Pay attention to these factors. When you post links on your site, check the links at http://prchecker.info and try to avoid any links less than a 4. I prefer to keep mine at 5 or higher.

Hello Teddy,

Wow, so sorry about that! Yes, I do see that information was accidentally missed when the tutorial was published, I will add this in.

Donald has given some good information above on how search engines rank pages. Here also is a link to a really good article that explains this as well: How search engines rank pages.

Thanks for pointing this out and I hope the information helps. If you have more questions please let us know :)
