How I Got High Google Page Ranks with Synthasite

  • Updated 8 years ago
Short answer: I don't know. Google is ever mysterious, and always evolving.

Long answer: These are the things that I think helped most...

First, my sites, and page ranks:

A web comic:
http://redmenace.synthasite.com/ or Li'l Nyet - 0
Another webcomic:
http://scratchinpost.synthasite.com/ or Scratchin Post - 4
A reference and how-to site for webcomics:
http://psychedelictreehouse.synthasit... or Psychedeltic Treehouse (Treehouse for short) - 6

1. I installed Google Analytics. But I made a mistake on Lil\'l Nyet and didn't put it on every page. That hurt that site.

2. I stayed close to my category, which for Google's sake is comics or webcomics. That means I linked to other comics sites when appropriate, and limited linking to unrelated sites.

3. I did favors for comics people, and said by way of thanks, they could to me. Some did, some did not. The ones that did show up routinely on my anlytics.

4. When visiting comics forums and commenting on comics blogs, I signed my name, followed by my links.

5. I recently learned that the words above a link matter, so now I include the word comics above them, as I did above. This explains the link to readers, and confirms Google's understanding of it.

6. After a few months of tinkering, my sites were ready for a broader audience. I used EntreCard to add a traffic boost, followed by ads on Project Wonderful. EntreCard traffic is not sticky, but I did pick up some regular readers from it, and the increased traffic made me look more respectable to advertisers when I started hosting ads on my site. Note: To do EntreCard right is time-consuming, and not recommended for people on a tight schedule.

Project Wonderful is a much cheaper ad service than Google but it is built around comics, games and related areas. New category members are trickling in, but most people will find limited opportunities there until it gets bigger. It is a lovely, helpful site, though. I give it a "10."

7. If you decide to host ads to supplement your ad budget you can try Google, Project Wonderful or a few others. You'll get more money for ad locations visitors can't miss.

8. My PR6 site, the treehouse, is a huge site with thousands of links to comics and comics sites. This gives it an authority that is unusual: few people can or want to manage so many links. You also might not want them on your home page. Create a few extra pages with titles like Annex, Links, Resources, Related Vendors and the like and fill them as you find worthwhile links. A link to an obvious site -- the photographer who links top Kodak, for example -- will be almost meaningless, but a cluster of links to meaningful sites of various sizes will matter.

9. After you have found a valuable person to have link to you, befriend them. If you have personal chemistry, let the relationship grow naturally. Put their link on your site, but don't announce it. A portion will develop a fondness for you and your site and will link to you. I'm not saying to be phony, or pretend to like someone who is unpleasant. I am saying to offer unsolicited support and goodwill, gradually over time, and let nature take it's course.

10. Sadly, you don't want to do link trades too much. Google prefers unreciprocated links because people swap meaningless links all the time to try to get a higher page rank. This is why category is so important to Google: comics sites link to comics sites, not to plumbers. I can't tell you how to balance it, because I don't know Google's formula. Therefore, letting things evolve naturally is good.

A huge benefit of my Treehouse site, which is all about comics, is that if someone links to my comics I can reward them with a big, fat link on the Treehouse, with illustration in many cases. Perhaps you should spread outgoing links between your site and a blog site, for example.

11. Don't try to beat the system. General principles of search engine optimization should be researched and understood, especially for merchants. (Comics don't have this issue -- we actually promote our competitors instead of trying to knock them down the rank.)
I don't know how Google factors traffic generated from various social networking sites (including EntreCard), but to the extent that it generates pass-through traffic or bartered traffic, Google has certainly figured out a way to discount it. Fact: the best thing you can do is make your site as wonderful and easy to use as possible, quick to load and clearly organized. Don't hype yourself. Just look classy and responsible and ask experienced people to criticize your site. With Synthasite, it's easy to change things, so your site should go through periods of evolution as you learn and hear feedback.

12. Watch your choice of fonts. Synthasite has added in the five months I've been using them, and I am sure they will add more. Will every font has its uses, the current roster includes poor man's versions of Trebuchet (Verdana) and some others that are low rent. This is Microsoft's fault, not Synthasite's, as they chose the bad ones for inclusion with their browser (all fonts must be known by a browser or it will substitute another font). Times NR is useful for conservative looks. Gill Sans is a 100-year-old font of great distinction that I use heavily. The fonts in our comic word balloons are not browser compatible and not offered by Synthasite, but are embedded in the image so the browser reads them like a picture.

13. Synthasite is a great place to learn about customer service if you are a merchant. Learn from their desire to please, their sincerity in talking with you, their determination to follow up no matter what, and their friendliness. Note that like anyone, they will set limits for people who are over-demanding, so choose your questions and advice requests with care so as not to overwhelm them. It's partly because I got great help last week that I have set aside time to offer these tips to other Synthasite users. I want to do the help squad a favor, and give them a reference to share with people.

14. If you read this far, you probably want to make your site a success, you chose Synthasite for service and ease of use (not to mention upcoming feature additions), and you probably see that building a site will be a long term commitment, requiring a year or more to really get rolling in many cases. You probably have the sense to see that there is no gimmick or quick fix that will propel your site toward high rankings. There will be lucky breaks -- a favorable review, an unexpected high powered link -- and there will be times when you feel stuck and frustrated. I think you'll find if you think back to where you were two months before, you'll be amazed at how far you've come.

P.S. Use every part of your Google Analytics. Read every report (not every day of course) until you understand what it is telling you. Entry Sources is particularly useful once you get going.

I think it's an impressive job under difficult circumstances and a good example for us all.

You know what I'm going to add: don't forget to diversify your sources. Swap links with someone who makes pre-fab treehouses (I saw a banner for such a thing today) and find blogs where you can leave meaningful comments that happen to include your trade. Find forums where you can see and be seen and people will ask about your banner ad. All that stuff piled up to little visible effect for months, then ZOOOM, our comic LilNyet.com took off, and there on the analytics were traces of all those things that I did.

Again, congratulations on your prowess with Googs.

Ed, been watching your stats with Google. - Very impressive!
I have a question though?

Are you still submitting your sitemap created with http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
or are you submitting the sitemap that SynthaSite generates for us?
I'm not liking the warnings I am getting from Google that all the pages have
the same priority.

Just checked Boomer and yes my site seems to error out when Google webmaster tools tries to access the sitemap. I have heard so many members say the same thing. I wonder if it could be possible to opt out of the automatic sitemap generation...

Bummer...

Sorry guys I had copied and pasted this before but didn't notice it wasn't listed above so I had to rewrite it... These are but a few of the online resources I have used. I know some seem unusual but as they have a good page rank I try to put my URL on those with a 5/10 or higher.

I have 4 affiliate networks I use for ads on my site and each of them have forums where I have included my URL's in my posts. I have 5 photo and clip art websites I am affiliates with and use my URL as my member name. Their page rank ranges from 5/10 to 8/10

Online classifieds

Page rank of 6/10

Ads on five local television station classifieds (keep them updated)
Page ranks of 6/10 +

I did a lot of hard work in making my site popular but couldn't get results so i used to complain a lot and after so much frustration i gave up and let it rest for one month then when i checked again i was amazed to see my site go directly to page rank 2 and my site on the first page among 1000000 + result for my keyword!!!!!!

I'm thankful to all people that helped me at synthasite!

It looks like you have desirable content, which people will find and want.

Not all my sites have taken off, but after ten months, our hottest site is drawing 1000 visitors/day. It seems like they begin to take off while you're not really aware of it and then you look at your data for the past month and you are moving. If your site is good, it will pick up momentum.

I'm glad your story turned positive and you shared it. I know there were early days when we were discouraged but over time amazing things can happen.

Though the site is written for webcomics, I see you feature anime, so you might find some tidbits of value at my resource site PsychedelicTreehouse.com.

Thanks again for sharing your success. If I had one observation, it might be to explain the site near the top of page one, to reduce clickaways who would have liked it if only they knew. I hope you don't mind me offering that tip. I welcome any thoughts on my sites, and learn a lot from what people report.

Best,
Bengo

Thank you. I have become sensitized to the suffering of friends and acquaintances with WP, and I am tired of all the sites that use WP defaults and end up with impaired design features. For many people, WP means relying on other people for help, and they may not be dependable.

I seem to be much more productive working with a SynthaSite platform than anything else I have tried.

Hi Franc,

(I'm a SynthaSite user)

Entering a site map is a fine plan, but keep in mind: passing verification is your gateway to the Webmaster Tools tools. They may seem a little unclear on use at first, but as you grow, study them and practice they begin to yield essential data. Using Links to see incoming links (who links to you) is very good, and diagnostics will help you refine you title and description tags, for example. You don't need to enter a site map to use them, either.

It can be useful to track your incoming links over time by keeping a monthly count.

That's great news. Thanks for letting me know.

We can all help each other by identifying ourselves as users, not staff, and offering what we know, rather than guessing, as least as a way to help nudge things along until staff can reply.

Hi Gareth7749. If you want to talk about your site or ask any questions you are most welcome to do so. However, please stop posting this link to your site on various threads. It is starting to look like spam and this is not the sort of thing we want to encourage here. We don't want our forum to become an advertising space. Thank you for respecting this request.

Congratulations, Boomer. The post that started this thread was written when I was more naive and less experienced, but I wanted to share what I thought I knew. If I was to rewrite it, I'd correct some errors and talk about SEO or site optimization as I call it. It took about three months of serious effort, but when I learned the essentials, it helped drive all three of my main SynthaSite sites to number one.

Want to see? Enter these site names, as they appear, in Google:

lil nyet
scratchin post
psychedelic treehouse

The first two are comics and the third is about making comics.

The third site relies much more on search, and pops up in good ranking or top position for many appropriate results.

If you want to visit any directly, you are most welcome. Just squeeze the words together (add comics to make ScratchinPostComics.com) and .com.

Here's a nice article from Google about title and description tags, which are one of the "big three" when it comes to optimization. (The other two are your text content and richness with keywords without making it overloaded) and your URL, which may or may not be descriptive of your site. Consider upgrading to an owned URL from SynthaSite.

http://www.google.com/support/webmast...

Different search topics are more competitive than others of course.

Hi Luis
I see your Google Analytics code is installed correctly on your index page. You should add this code in the same way on each page of your site that you want Google to track. Also, remember to update your site after doing so. If you are still having difficulty, let us know.

Also note that it will take time for your site to be indexed by the search engines. Use the tips on this thread to promote your site while you wait!

Well, it's very much a group effort now, but thanks.

No, you can use any analytics you want. To me, an ideal set-up would be one server-based system, plus GA on the site. This would allow cross-comparisons and help you spot weaknesses in each, or useful tools in each. Opting out of GA means there is a much smaller pool of people around to help you, but it's not insane. Some of my closest friends rely on only server-based analytics. One impression I get from them is that when the ones who know what they're doing look around, they see a lot of people who have made installation errors that affect their data.

This short comparison article might be of interest: http://www.developmentseed.org/blog/a...

So you're clear, PageRank comes from Google measuring your site. Analytics comes from a tool, like GA, measuring your traffic.

Some people fuss that PageRank is old technology, but it's still a good measure of the extent to which others link to you.

Following some of the more worthy blogs in your subject area, and inserting your site name in the appropriate part (or, in the absence of a box, with your signature) counts on a variety of measurement crieteria, including PR, but also Google Blog Mentions, Internet URL mentions and other less well-known measures. It is a nice way to share a meaningful comment on a blog while expanding your web presence.

PR changes constantly, and you can Google "page rank finder" for little tools that tell you your current PR. Google only updates your assigned PR a few times a year, and they haven't done it in ages, so if you can get some links, blog comment links and mentions in blogs or media, you may get a higher page rank by the next update than you would otherwise.

Hi Monique Thank you very much for taking the time to visit and supervise my site

Now I a have another bunch of questions lol;)

1.- I have already put the googlewebmasters code in place and my site has been verified, all though if i google apolo69 i dont get my page :(, this was the first thong i did like a month ago

2.- I want to verify my site on yahoo, how can I do this?

I ́ve read the article
http://getsatisfaction.com/SynthaSite...

but I get confused, they said i have tu put the metafile on the root directory of my page but how do I upload it and where? or do I only need to put number tag in the description part of my index page?

I went to https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com... and put my site www.apolo69.synthasite.com but my status its failed cause they didnt found the metafile, I tried to upload it, where I upload all the files for my page,(file manager in my page) but i recive an error that because its a html file and I cant upload it.

3.- how do i verify my site with msnlivesearch?

I tried to do it in
http://webmaster.live.com/webmaster/W...

and also i have upload the xml file with the file manager in my page hope you can help me with this.

I dont know if this is the better way to do things, I know google its the leader in serach engines, but I have done everything you advise, since a month a go or so, and its the time that if you google apolo69 google dont find my page, it founds a lot of pages regarding offers i have placed in diferent pages like craiglist but you cant find my page directly, so I thought that the best way to go was to verify my site in all the searh engines, this will give me more exposure for sure.

I found this http://www.dmoz.org/add.html and i think its a great resourse the only problem its that I had send my url, they said they do updates in their database weekly and it has been 2 weeks almost 3 since i suggest my site and its still not found, but they work with all the major search engines so I think this is great, if you have any suggestions on this engine i will appreciate it

Thanks for your patience have a great weekend

Best Regards

Luis

Hi Luis, until someone arrives, I can offer a few things. First, your situation is common and can be resolved, though sometimes only gradually. Don't lose hope.

Second, on my blog we recently ran a test of DMOZ and it's pretty much a FAIL. A lovely idea, but working poorly. Consider, instead, an article about what your blog is and what makes it special on Google's Knol, which is like Wikipedia with less editors fighting and much easier to use.

I studies your site, and I invite you to consider some suggestions: Studies show the majority of surfers don't like music that starts by itself. Some are at work, having a break, and it makes everyone look at them. The solution? Put a "MUSIC ON" button near the top, so it is an option.

I'd also like to see you add a simple, clear phrase above your text that states clearly what your site is about. Probably three to five words, in larger type.

I am not saying your text color choices should be changed, but I encourage you to make another non-public page and copy a version of your home page into it. Then, experiment with sections in different colors, sizes and fonts. Don't make changes right away, sleep on it, and look at them fresh a second time. Delete bad ones, and add more. Gradually you will find a winner. I personally use Gill Sans for almost everything.

Do keep in mind: every font has an ideal size, maybe two, where they look best. The other sizes will not be as good.

A more random suggestion: tasty food images make cookware more appealing to some. Just a thought to consider.

A SynthaSite staff person will probably be along soon to answer you technical questions. I'm just an enthusiastic user.

Luis, Google made a small design blunder when they decided to tell you your verification tag in the middle of a long sentence. Some people are not sure where the tag begins and ends. Use the section that starts after "your tag should be:" then include everything up to and including the = sign.

You want to be sure to use meta tag, not file, as well, though I think you know this.

I can't answer the music switch button. Let's hope someone else can.

I used to put keyword in like this: first, second, third, and always with comas. After reading this, amongother things, I changed: http://www.google.com/support/webmast...

I'm assuming you're talking about description tags. My site http://psychedelictreehouse is an archive/how-to for making comics on line. It contains a large comic list section. For that area a description tag might look like this:

Webcomics List: Title Library, Webcomics A-Z, International Comics OR MAYBE

International Webcomic List: Online Comics Title Archive, World Comics, Alphabetical List of Active Webcomic Titles.

but sometimes that can be overkill and I'll go simple:

Webcomic Link List

For Titles, I like this approach:

Webcomic Links | Psychedelic Treehouse

but since Google likes distinct titles for each page, I might add page numbers:

Webcomic Link List 3 | Psychedelic Treehouse

The vertical line is called a pipe, and hides on most keyboards above the return key.

For the keywords box, well, that's there on the theory that some search engines still use it. I enter a few important words and leave it at that:

Webcomics Links, Directory of Comics, Archive

Note tht it's good to capitalize words. You never know where Google will graph words to give a search result for your site a headline, so you want them all to look good. Also remember that your readers see your title tag entries as page titles in your browser, so title them accordingly.

The final tag is actually called an attribute, not a tag. It is a way of inserting "alternative text" in your image tags. To do it, click near your image, but not so close as to get the dotted line around it. It's at the bottom of the second menu for Properties in your sidebar, and clicking near the photo should bring it up. Name your photo to help it show up in Google Image Search results.

The short comment I just made to Ticho was under the impression we were talking about Webmaster tools. I have not heard about putting tags or links in tag boxes. What is the purpose of this? If it is a way to insert your data on every page at once (just a guess), be aware that duplicate tags will not be good for your search results. I'm sure Synth wants to add a feature to do all pages at once at some point, so I recommend being patient with the current system for now. (It's so much more awesome than even a year ago when there were 4000 users).

But since I'm not sure what you're doing, I may be way off base. I'd love to learn from you, to understand.
