I believe in the not too distant future FaceBook will come to the problem of more people trying to leave than are signing up - and Twitter is another thing that may fade like ICQ. I have looked at Twitter and it seems just so silly ...really, has there ever been one meaningful Tweet? Is it possible that no one is really following anybody? They just signed up and are not really following? same for FaceBook ... just because 5000 are signed as your friends, most likely nobody is following your profile - . YouTube I can see lasting but these others seem like Fads that will be pushed aside by new Fads. Plus their Privacy Policies are almost Criminal.

If anyone really knows the importance, as I do think their long term business plans will peak soon.
maybe 10 years from now - people will be saying, yeah, I was one of the ones caught in the personal information Era of both Twitter and FaceBook.

Hi johnnybravado,

I think this is a really valid question and I think the answer varies based on your business and customer demographic.

I attended the Web 2.0 conference in SF earlier this year and one thing that resonated with me about the overwhelming number of social networks, which to focus on as a business, and the importance of it all was this: we have to be on all of them because it's still too early in the game to know which one is going to win.

That being said, you know your business best so if you don't feel your customers are on Facebook or Twitter, than I would say it's not an important place for you to be either.

I agree twitter just seems like millions of people talking to themselves BUT whenever I send out a tweet with a link to my sister's book store on Bonanzle she says she sees a spike upwards of traffic. So there is some use to it.
Facebook I just don't have time for but it may have similar uses. (and I'm really not interested in other people's chickens and vegetables! LOL)

thanks for the comments,

Seriously though - I believe they will all run the course and be swallowed by the next wave to come along. It is not like either FB or Twitter really has anything to offer when there are real online companies like YOLA.

what I am reading is they are morphing into Giant Spam marketing machines.

only time will tell, a hunch tells me FB will have more people leaving than joining in the next 5 years.

on a funnier note if and when FB jumps the shark - imagine if down the road FaceBook gets bailed out by the Government and they apply their own Privacy Policy to all 500 million members.

JB - for now I am going to wait and stay with the 6 billion that have not joined.
