well... as many as you want... the correct response should be... how many keywords should I have to rank good with the search engines?

You should never use any one word keywords (from research I've recently done of several different sources). Keywords should be "keyphrases" of two to four words and no more than two keyphrases per page. the difference between a keyphrase and keywords are that each of the words aren't separated with a comma and the keyphrase is a group of words that make sense together. Also, try to think of something that makes sense and is more commonly searched. An example could be, instead of rhinoplasty (not commonly searched and only one word) try "nose job" (two words and more commonly search).

Never heard of a limit, try to use key words on each page.

Some say 5 to six, some say use phrases, another say 600 characters

Use as many as needed, to correspond with that page

I try not to over do it but do sometimes

Hello Smithy,
You should use keywords that make sense to the page content, keywords that you have mentioned on the page as well as locations or variations of certain words. Here is a link to a tutorial which you might find helpful with more tips: Building Your Site With SEO in Mind.

Hope this helps!
